UPDATED! Boba Fett and Han Solo may each get their own movie! Darth Vader may return as well!

Feb. 6, 2013by: Alex Maidy

UPDATE: So, while these rumors of standalone Han Solo and Boba Fett movies came from strong sources at Entertainment Weekly, according to Deadline, their sources say “Nobody knows when these movies are even coming out. Right now, people are just kicking around ideas. Which is why you hear it’s Yoda one day and a young Han Solo another. It’s all in early development right now.”

Well, it looks like the rumors are beginning to take shape. Entertainment Weekly is citing sources at Lucasfilm and Disney who say two of the first STAR WARS standalone movies will focus on Han Solo and Boba Fett. This does not dispel the possibility of a Yoda movie, but EW has some good details on what these films will focus on. Here are the details:

The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE, so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

The Boba Fett film would take place either between A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, or between EMPIRE and RETURN OF THE JEDI, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required.

Either way, EW cites their source says these details are very preliminary and may change, but this is awesome news. Both projects sound like they would be awesome and there is a tone of expanded universe comics and novels to inform both of these projects.

The story also states the timing of these projects is intentional. Placing them during the original trilogy time period allows for Disney and Lucasfilm to use Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt despite both dying at the end of RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinsberg are in fact drafting these projects now as well as working with Michael Arndt on EPISODE VII. No directors have been named yet nor release dates aside from sometime before 2021. But, they are happening people! Now, lets start dream casting!

who wants an R rated Boba Fett?

Boba Fett could be the sickest star wars stand alone movie...IF it is done right. Boba Fett has to be one of the top 5 star wars characters everyone loves and also one of the most bad ass ones. They should follow Boba Fett after he's all alone after his dad's death and how he trained to be the bounty hunter he is today. I imagine kills galore.

I'd be down with a Boba Fett movie. Or even better, a movie where Boba Fett is the main villain.

I'm more skeptical about the other. If Disney is intent on making "young Han Solo", you just know they will screw it up. Consider this: a Han Solo movie is probably at least 5 years away minimum. Who do we know that will be in their early-to-mid 20's by then, has brown(ish) hair, and already has millions of fans that buy lots of his merchandise? That's right... Disney's Han Solo will be

jeez... I personally hope none of this is true....if this is all true, Why cant they just scrap the old characters altogether and start with something completely fresh? Its supposed to be the Star Wars "Universe"...Im pretty sure there are tons of other characters and stories to be told (Knights of the old Republic, Crimson Empire, Jedi Twilight etc.,) Do we really need to know MORE about Han Solo or Boba Fett? Getting nervous now

I never thought I would ever say this about a new Star Wars movie but do we really need these?? I'm all for expanding the universe and making more films but i don't want to see the same characters over and over again. Granted a Boba Fett movie could be cool if done the right way (possibly a gritty rated R gangster film) but who wants to see a lame Han Solo prequel. Like plenty of people below me said NO ONE can play Han except Ford. If they want to make a film about a young smuggler set in the

I'm getting the feeling that Disney is afraid to stray away from the most popular characters of the franchise which makes me slightly nervous.

On another note have they ruled out the possibility of animated films based on these characters? A yoda centered film done with PIxar quality animation could be very cool.

Someone much younger than Harrison ford was at age 35 during the original trilogy so how can Sean bean play that role. It just better not be Shia labeef that's all I have to say about that

New characters.

New time periods.

New settings.

New stories.

I know, I know, I'm ca-raaaazy!

Wait! There are more cool characters than just these 2

Ok hold up. Why does it have to be Han Solo. What about DASH RENDAR. I mean its pretty much the same character that could be used. Also what's the rush with Disney wanting to shoot out all these star wars films. They are gonna shoot themselves in the foot.

These ideas all sound really fucking generic. A Star Wars movie is not supposed to focus on one character. It's supposed to be an ensemble story. I do not support any of these rumored ideas. Also, there shouldn't be any noteworthy antagonists beyond Emperor Palpatine. The core of Stars Wars's villainy is the Emperor. Everything that happens culminates in his death. Offshoot movies are just stupid, and really pointless. It's fine to expand on the lore through the Expanded Universe; but nothing

Offshoot movies are just stupid, and really pointless. It's fine to expand on the lore through the Expanded Universe; but nothing chronologically beyond Palpatine's death is worthy of a movie. There is a logical reason why I say this. If offshoot movies try to build up some other antagonistic presence, and it culminates in something more dramatic than RotJ, then it means everything that happened between ANH, ESB, and RotJ was meaningless. You can't have the good side of the Force fighting and defeating the Dark side over and over within the realm of movies, because it becomes redundant and pointless. It can only happen once within the movies. The Expanded Universe can keep treading this theme as many times as it wants, because you can ignore it as having no impact on the movies.

I have a bad feeling about this...

The way fanboys complain about how Anakin/Vader was handled in the prequels, I'd be surprised to know if anyone wanted more prequels to beloved characters. Hey Disney, as someone who loves the characters of Solo and Fett, I'm not excited for some solo (pun intended) spin-off movies, so you know you have a problem.

STAR WARS SOURCE MATERIAL IS ASTOUNDING IN VOLUME

All you have to do is go to wikipedia to see a list of SW books. Han Solo has his own trilogy and several books where he's the main character. Actually the number of characters, time settings and scenarios, Disney could put our a movie every 6 months and would barely scratch the surface of what is out there in print. Even Disney must be spinning with amount of material that is out there. Granted some of it isn't top shelf stuff but all of it is interesting enough to consider reworking for

It all starts 5000 years before New Hope and goes past for 25,000 years after New Hope. So, this news is fun to read about but until we see the logo blasting onto the screen and the scroll rolls up the screen, it's fun to speculate and hope that whoever is your favorite character from whichever era appears in their own movie. Actually the only hope is that these films exceed what we've already been shown.

Whoever's playing Han Solo will have ginormous shoes to fill. Well, at least it probably will be better than the idea George Lucas had to put a ten-year-old Han Solo being raised by Wookiees in Kashyyk in Episode III. And look out, Nathan Fillion suggestions incoming!

I wouldn't be interested in watching a recast Han Solo. If they have to do a Han Solo film, I'd much rather have them do an animated film something on the level of Beowult in terms of realism, and have the original actors do the voice work, playing their younger selves.

I dont know what to think about this project. While I agree seeing a new Han Solo movie would be cool. I just hope this whole solo movie idea doesnt get out of hand and kind of ruin the Star Wars franchise.

Wouldn't it make more sense...

Wouldn't it make more sense to make a Han Solo film FEATURING Bobo Fett so we can get the backstory of these two, which was heavily hinted on in Empire Strikes Back but never really explained? The whole story of why Jaba The Hutt wanted Solo in the first place? A Boba Fett stand alone movie will do about as good as Dredd did.

I'm down with this, actually. I like the idea of young Solo meeting Chewy, possibly documenting the card game that won him the Falcon from Lando (they'd need a young Lando too, which is another challenging casting call). Of course, they'd definitely have to show what the Kessel run is, how Han did it in less than 12 parsecs and why that's a good thing.

Boba Fett might be good as well, if not a bit short on dialogue. I'd like to see them adapt the story about his escape from the Sarlaac.

If I don't see a lot of Jedi action I'm not interested. That's what separates Star Wars from any other space saga. That's what makes it unique.

Lethal Weapon in Space

I'll bet a million credits that the Han Solo project will be a buddy movie with Lando and Han. And then he meets Chewy and everything changes.
I don't know whether this is the best or worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars... all I know is I have a nosebleed now. Thanks a lot, Bob Iger.

1--No Harrison Ford = NO HAN SOLO
2--Boba Fett SURVIVES being dropped into the Sarlaac. Make a film set after RotJ.
3--Earlier Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt films would be logical. I'd look forward to seeing them, especially Jabba. *cough*slavegirls*cough*

Could be pretty cool...key word...COULD...

If JGL can be doctored up to look like a young Bruce Willis in Looper, then I'd be game for a younger actor for Ford/Solo. However, Ford has to still have some involvement weather it be as narrator or an old man sitting in a cantina telling another young smuggler, his kid, etc...then there's some potential.

I'd be down for Boba too, again if done right...

I doubt these will be good because......

because I doubt a lot of thought will be put into them. The producers know that these movies will make a killing at the box office, so they'll probably hire writers and directors that no ones really heard of and they'll make it fast to make some money.

The new Star Wars film will be different, but not the standalone movies....I hope I'm wrong though.

WHAT THE FUCK

Why do we keep needing to revolve Star Wars around these characters? The Force Unleashed games, despite their flaws, had some interesting slants on the universe. Knights of the Old Republic were great stories in their own rite. Why can't we find a way to move away from doing the same shit over and over again with this franchise? This shit didn't work in the prequels, fucking awful news.

Boba Fett ??

Okay, please don't flame me for this, but seriously:
what is the big deal about Boba Fett? What makes him such a huge fan favourite?
He was a very minor character with only had a handful of scenes in the original trilogy plus a pretty embarrassing demise.

Serious question: what am I missing that makes him so popular?

exciting news on a boba fett movie but id rather see them start the movie off after return of the jedi explaining how he gets out of the sarlacc pit and go from there.but a han solo movie im eh on this the only way id be excited is if they used cgi like in tron to put harrisons face on another actor and have him act out all the scenes but even then we already know everything we need to know about solo rather ford just be in the sequals and do a boba fett movie

I personally would like to see a young Han Solo origin movie of how he began smuggling. Doing a movie of him in between the Episode series, takes away from the Nostalgia of Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford IS Han Solo.
