Bond: Casino Royale

Nov. 14, 2008by:

While DIE ANOTHER DAY broke franchise records- all was not well in Bond-land. Producers Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli, reportedly unhappy with the fantastical, sci- fi direction the series was heading in, decided that the franchise needed a radical reboot. While his films remained as popular as ever, Pierce Brosnans Bond contract was not renewed, and the search was on for a new Bond. After months of testing, Daniel Craig- an unconventional choice to be sure, was announced as the new Bond.

The fan backlash against Craig began immediately, and many expected the film to be an absolute disaster. History proved otherwise.

CASINO ROYALE

PLOT: A young James Bond, newly given a double 0 designation, is sent to play in a high stakes poker tournament, where hes expected to bankrupt the villainous LeChiffre, the moneyman for an international terror network.

REVIEW: CASINO ROYALE is for Bond films, what BATMAN BEGINS was to the BATMAN franchise. It rebooted the series in an exciting and fresh way, essentially reinventing the character for a new generation of filmgoers- but at the same time not ignoring the formula that made the franchise so successful in the first place.

Everything about this film is top notch. The script, which was co-written by Paul Haggis, the writer-director behind CRASH, is extremely solid, and to its credit is remarkably faithful to Ian Flemings original novel. Of course, the script was peppered with a few really strong action sequences, as the novel was a fairly small scale affair. Thankfully, the producers finally wised up and rehired Martin Campbell, who previously helmed GOLDENEYE- and was actually capable of shooting a good action sequence without completely resorting to his second unit. The opening parkour inspired chase sequence is one of the best action sequences in the series, and immediately established Daniel Craig as a Bond to be reckoned with.

BOND

While Daniel Craig took a lot of grief for not being particularly Bond like when his casting was announced, most fans changed their tune the second they saw him in action. Hes really incredible in this film- and its very exciting watching him onscreen as you really get the sense that a star has been born. He actually got nominated for a BAFTA for his performance, and in the Academy wasnt prejudiced against action film, he probably would have copped an Oscar nom as well.

VILLAIN

Mads Mikkelsen as the villainous LeChiffre- easily the best Bond villain since Sean Bean in GOLDENEYE. The scene where he tortures Bond with a carpet beater is one of the most chilling scenes in the series.
BOND GIRL

The delicious Eva Green as Vesper Lynd, the woman that broke Bonds surprisingly fragile heart. You know- if theres one woman that could convincingly turn Bond into a one woman man- Green would be the one to do it. If you like Green in this film- you owe it to yourself to check out THE DREAMERS (trust me).

BOND MUSIC: David Arnold is back to score CASINO ROYALE, and he provides a solid score- which is a little less techno based than some of his earlier scores- going more for a retro John Barry style. Im not too keen on the Chris Cornell theme song though

BODY COUNT: This Somewhere around twelve- which doesnt sound high, but its the quality, not the quantity. Bond shoots, stabs, and snaps his way though the film, and at one point even used a nail gun on an unlucky baddie.

NUMBER OF WOMEN BOND SLEEPS WITH: This is the one area where the film lacks, as Bond only sleeps with Vesper- but alas, as this is more of a love story than other installments Ill let it slide.

BEST ONE- LINER: When his testicles are being smashed into pulp by LeChiffre and his carpet beater- he defiantly asks LeChiffre: I've got a little itch, down there. Would you mind?

BEST DOUBLE ENTENDRE: Vesper: [introducing herself to Bond] I'm the money.
Bond: Every penny of it

BEST GADGET: : No gadgets in this installment.

RECEPTION: CASINO ROYALE exceeded all expectations, pulling in $167 Million in North America, for an incredible $597 million worldwide total.

GRADE: 9/10- easily the most solid Bond film in years

I would still like a QT version

There has been mention on the forum about how QT had the opportinity to helm this one. Based on some of the negative reviews here on QoS, I wonder if his take would have been better. Needless to say, I still plan on seeing QoS sometime within the next few weeks.

I was in the minority that always felt Craig would pull it off. Partly because I didn't care for James Bond at the time (a bit old-fashioned), and partly because the fan favorite to succeed Brosnan--Clive Owen--had just hit his stride in a way that I felt Bond would restrict, whereas Craig was a relative unknown.

Having just read the book when this thing came out (and finding a much different Bond character than the movies portray) I was very refreshed by the faithfulness, as well as the little ways they poked fun at Bond's iconic image.

And Green and Mikkelsen were perfect in their roles (looking forward to seeing what Mathieu Almaric does with the new villain).

Bond does not sleep with Solange. He leaves her with champagne and caviar just as their about to get it on.

Although I love Casino Royale, boy would I have loved to see what Tarantino would've done with it.
At one point he was approached to direct it and he agreed but on one condition that Brosnan stays. He wanted to make the grittiest Bond ever and stick very close to the book.
Alas, things did not work out.

I had faith

And anyone who'd seen at least a minute of Layer Cake had faith too.
Great film. Two of the best looking Bond girls ever in this and Quantum of Solace... I personally love that we have a proper, progressive sequel plot running through the Craig films, instead of the disjointed "Who'll play Felix next time?" feel of the original Bonds.

Whilst QoS is nowhere near as good as Casino Royale, if you watch them as one long ass film, they're fantastic together. They just need that third film to

and HOLD ON!!
Bond slept with Solange and Vesper... Bond wins the Aston from Dimitrios, then goes back with Solange and does the naughty... Well, he might not have got to fourth base, but there was certainly some proper naughtiness going on!

HOLD ON AGAIN!
The I'm the money line isn't a double entendre!

A double entendre is a line like "I'll take him up the back passage". That line there is just flirtation. You Americans and your lack of understanding!!

its nice to know that the producers are hiring hot european babes who have open to nudity (olga and eva) , i wonder who's the next bond babe?

call me old fashion, but i think they should NOT be tough-types (like michelle yeoh and halle berry)

i like Chris Cornell ( in audioslave and rage against the machine ), but his theme song sux

No gadgets? What about the homing device they put in his arm and the defibrillator in his car? They're no invisible cars, but still.

And you might want to check the opening sentence to your review: "what Batman Begins was to the Bond franchise"?

No, he didn't. He left to go stop the terrorist at the Miami Airport.

Beefmeister:

Salt Juice?? You mean, salt water?? Bond stole the salt shaker and a glass, went into the bathroom and made saltwater, drank it in an attempt to vomit up the poison... Not really a Q gadget...

Now, as for the gadgets, I'd definitely count the pocket defibulator as a gadget. But, yeah, not the "salt juice" as you call it.

For those of you bitchin about Craig, read the god damn book. The movie is accurate as hell with everything besides all the changes made because of the time period.

Craig resembles Bond better than almost anyone in the series. people expect him to look like some pretty boy (brosnan, moore) and the truth is, the character Flemming created resembles connery and Craig more than anyone else.

As for the love story, this was a reboot, exlaining WHY Bond is the way he is. The love story is necessary to explain why he trusts No one, which, is a must have quality and is why he has survived all the missions he has. Casino portrayed that beautifully.

I must admit I was a little skeptical of Daniel Craig at first but since this was a reboot I found it pretty good...After watching it a 2nd time.

Daniel Craig is good but my only complaint is that he's SHORT (for James Bond IMO)and I'm don't mind him being blond.

Bond finally returns...

Bond was bad-ass....

However, the story wasn't as tight as it should have been...(It still was tight enough to make it a well-rounded film, but some things could have been trimmed)...

Eva Green, while a good actress, isn't as sexy and exotic looking as Olga Kurylenko(sp?)--who appears in the next entry...

Definitely a more rugged, and dirty Bond...who mixes realism with movie action...and a believable story. (Not too mention, Bond has some ranges of emotion! That alone makes the

Bond acting like a schoolgirl?

The movie was quite good until the tagged on 20 minutes or so after the villain was out. The lovestory between Bond and Vesper felt so horribly forced and the quotes and lines they shared were just stupid. It nearly ruined this pretty bad-ass Bond for me.

The best Bond IMO. The perfect mix of action, character, and plot. The only sore spots was Le Chiffre himself. He was a bit too much of a pussy and didn't put too much of a fight beyond the poker table.

As for n2oop5u, Bond left for Miami before they could get it on.

I love this one its a top 5 Bond movie for me. It was what the franchise needed after DAD. I just got back from seeing Quantum Of Solace. I liked it but I do agree that it was very action heavy (four good size action sequences within the first hour is a lil much) and very Bourne-esque. I hope for the next one they dont have the continueing story line cuz to me his conflict is resolved and just make a Bond adventure not a sequel. Overall I liked it I had my problems with it no where near as good
