Hidden among the summer blockbusters and sequels this year is Richard Linklater’s 12 year filmmaking journey BOYHOOD. As you may know by now, the writer/director filmed this drama over the course of 12 years, talk about commitment. We literally get to see a young boy, played by Ellar Coltrane, grow up on screen. I can't wait to see this possible game changer that our own Chris Bumbray Called in his Sundance review "the most important from a film history perspective".

Here’s the official synopsis for BOYHOOD:

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

When it comes to that soundtrack they just happened to mention, it's pretty impressive. It spans the 12 years that’s for sure; and how great is the inclusion of Band On The Run! During the first screening of Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD at the Sundance Film Festival in January Linklater cautioned that the music may not be final as he had not attained licenses for all of the songs.

1. Summer Noon – Jeff Tweedy
2. Yellow – Coldplay
3. Hate To Say I Told You So – The Hives
4. Could We – Cat Power
5. Do You Realize?? – The Flaming Lips
6. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
7. One (Blake’s Got A New Face) – Vampire Weekend
8. Hate It Here – Wilco
9. Good Girls Go Bad (Feat. Leighton Meester) – Cobra Starship
10. Beyond The Horizon – Bob Dylan
11. Band On The Run – Paul Mccartney & Wings
12. She’s Long Gone – The Black Keys
13. Somebody That I Used To Know (Feat. Kimbra) – Gotye
14. I’ll Be Around – Yo La Tengo
15. Hero – Family Of The Year
16. Deep Blue – Arcade Fire

We have some new images from the film below followed by the trailer; BOYHOOD hits limited release July 11th 2014 and the soundtrack comes out July 8th.

Are you going to be checking out BOYHOOD for a touch of nostalgia?

I have a feeling this will land on Netflix not long after it leaves theaters. I'm really interested in seeing it.

Looks awesome and the concept behind this is really exciting and unique. Too bad it'll probably one of those small, little great films that won't get a wide release and will be hard as hell to find in a theater that is near by (at least for me).

I doubt it'll be secluded to New York and LA. Linklater's got enough cred for this to be a nice bit of counter-programming to the big-budget offerings.

I mean if Before Midnight got somewhat of a big release, maybe this will too.
