Brad Pitt must save the world from zombies in this trailer for World War Z

Nov. 8, 2012by: Niki Stephens

One minute you're sitting in traffic just having a nice moment with your family, and the next moment...

You're f*cked.

Well, maybe not if you're Brad Pitt and you apparently have a particular badass skill set for dealing with situations like this-- zombie situations, that is. In the trailer for WORLD WAR Z, we get to see a glimpse had how things begin to where we get a solo Pitt helping out the government. While I am waiting for some jackass at the library to bring back the book from Max Brooks, I do know that several complaints from the fans had to do with the fact that a story like this was best suited for a mini-series or a network like HBO. The trailer looks pretty decent, but the CGI zombies are bothering me. I'm also not into the the fast moving ones, but in all honesty, if it involves zombies I'm going to watch it.

Check out the trailer below. No synopsis as of yet.

I'm not going to bother comparing it to the brilliant novel so I shall judge it as a stand-alone movie. Ummm...I AM LEGEND 2. Yup, that's what it is. I'm now searching the trailer frame by frame for a shot of Will Smith waving at the camera. It's gotta be there man...it has to!

I always imagined WORLD WAR Z to basically be the zombie sequel of CONTAGION and based in that level of reality given the tone of the novel. That is not this trailer from the looks of it. Steven Soderbergh should have

Still looks wild but yeah...I AM LEGEND 2: The Prequel. We shall see.

Realistically, it's Brad Pitt vs. zombies...that's awesome!

I've said my piece about this film, so fuck it. It's not the book, It's not even remotely like the book and I'm not sure why they chose to call it WWZ other than to use brand recognition to sell tickets and that puts them ethically at about the same place as Asylum Pictures in my book.

It's not about it being on a pedestal man, get that through your brain, it's about the fact that they didn't even bother using the book from what I can see in the trailer. They have literally changed everything. That's what we're mad about.

Like it was the first time that kind of thing ever happened. And would people please stop putting that book on pedestal. It's entertaing but it's not brilliant, far from it. Plus you said it, it's not the book. Judge the movie for what it is, not what you wanted it to be.

And just like I Am Legend I'm sure I'll be a little disappointed when I see it, but still manage to enjoy it. I feel like I'm one of the few people that read World War Z and wasn't blown away. It's strength was in creating very imaginative, terrifying scenes though and I'm curious to see them on film. Brad Pitt being in it is a major plus.

You won't see those scenes my friend, because they don't exist here. This is not WWZ the film, this is a zombie film named WWZ.

It looks like it could be fun, and the scale does seem reasonably large, but I guess that given the troubled production history and long gestation period, we'll be at least a little disappointed - I haven't read the book and don't know much about it, but I've got a feeling that those who have may not be giant fans of this adaptation.

No, we really aren't. We like this adaptation as much as I imagine you like Twilight vampires and pretty much for the same reason, because they aren't vampires and this isn't WWZ.

That's what I foresee some people unfamiliar with the title saying. There's no mention of zombies, just glimpses of running herds of people. It just looks like another big scale Roland Emmerich disaster adventure with a BOURNE style and running people as the threat. It doesn't come across as a horror film at all. Sure, the Z in the title may tip a few people off, but the general public isn't very smart at deciphering titles. I once knew of someone who took little kids to see BLACK X-MAS because they thought it was a Tyler Perry-esque holiday comedy. The CGI zombies are better than I AM LEGEND (which isn't saying anything), though they still look animated.

Production woes mean nothing come opening day. I will judge the film according to the final product, not now. It's just a first trailer. It looks like a tired premise. A $100 million version of 28 DAYS LATER and I AM LEGEND-- Oh wait, and every George Romero movie, but we knew that the second it was green lit. I'll see it and I hope it's great.

Why the CGI crapfest... WHY??????

I'd rather take 3 zombies made with practical effects than an army of CGI no-emotion no-threat whatsoever so-called "army"... *sigh*

Don't we already have a much better zombie show made with more heart and soul?

YOU PEOPLE ARE MISSING THE SCIENCE BEHIND THIS

For those that were infected within 8 or so hours, the tendons and muscle tissue will still be intact, HENCE THE FAST ZOMBIES. Obviously half of you never took Biology in high school. Fast zombies is not only possible, but it is very probable. And in big cities with close quarters, millions will be in close contact with each other, therefore resulting in immediate infection without much time for rigor mortis to set in. In wide open areas the infection would be slower to spread. I mean,

If you had read the companion book to WWZ, you would see that Brooks laid out everything about how his zombies moved and operated and why they worked. Most of his entire book revolved around the zombies being slow moving walls of death, not Tzunamis that flowed over the landscape and engulfed cities. Almost none if any of his iconic scenes that made the book what it was would work with fast zombies.

Your muscles need energy to move your body. How do these zombies gain energy if they are dead? Does their digestive system remain intact? If so, why call them zombies at all? What makes them "dead" if everything in their body is working?

Different doesn't mean bad.

The book was great, but this could be cool too. They have turned this into more of a man-of-action/ zombie movie, and obviously the book' s format doesn't really lend itself readily to film. Changes were gonna happen.

I'm gonna see it but....

Is it just me or does this look exactly like the prequel to I Am Legend would have?? Replace Brad Pitt with Will Smith and zombies with vampires, then make it night.

I'm gonna see it, but damn it just feels like the same movie.

Yeah.... I pretty much abandoned hope this was going to be a honest-to-God adaptation of the book at this point. I'll just have to come in with an extremely open mind and let it take me for a ride. But who knows, if this ever becomes a hit, we just might get a TV mockumentary miniseries.

Wait, what was the answer to the riddle?

...I must know.

Anyway, being one of the (apparently) three people who haven't read the book, I'm looking at the trailer from a different perspective from those who have. I'm aware of how expansive and dense the novel is, but to me, it still seems fun: Floyd from True Romance fucking shit up. With zombies. Looks pretty epic to me, and if the reports about the difficult production have any truth to them, it could in fact turn out to be the Apocalypse Now of zombie movies in more ways than

I'm cautiously optimistic.

And I think it's actually a smart move to NOT sell it as a zombie movie (at this stage of the advertising, anyway); I have a feeling that some folks might be getting a little jaded of the whole vampire/zombie genre that seems to be inundating every form of entertainment these days, and perhaps selling it as an apocalyptic disaster movie first and a zombie film second might lure in more people than the other way around. Or, at least, lure in the people who are unaware of the fact that the Z stands for Zombie.

I can see elements of the book, especially the shot of all the ships on the ocean. But the sad fact is that we dont get 1 good look at a zombie in a trailer for a movie about...ZOMBIES! The CGI is shit. If you cant make it look realistic, then why go through with it at all?

fast zombie science.

gotta love that post talking about the science behind fast zombies and how it'd be probable because the muscles would still be strong. C'mon guys, just like he said, take a high school biology class, obviously dead people's bodies would still have working muscle because obviously the human body doesn't need oxygen to generate ATP to help move. i mean c'mon guys, basic high school science. And oh, so the people may not be dead but just have a rage virus??

Well obviously, if you'd taken high school biology, you'd know that once people are infected, it can be an instantaneous turn. Because some viruses multiply x100000000 at site of infection, then strap on their jet packs and zoom through the blood vessels/neurons to get to the brain, where they also replicate and take over the (dead and now non-replicating?) motor neurons. in 3 seconds. c'mon guys, high school science. yeesh.

It's a shame it didn't coz at the end of the day it looks like a run of the mill zombie action flick and I hear that the book was really different than the usual. Seriously though ill say it again. It has nothing to do with the book so don't worry about not knowing the source material. If you enjoyed 2012 and Transformers 2 this is the movie for you. So please enjoy the crappy CGI and horrible plot. It has just all been done before and it manages to make a zombie outbreak look boring.

Looks like fun.

I have an issue with zombies that can run fast or appear to have super powers...but I'll still watch it. I also have an issue with people who cannot get past the fact the a movie or TV series does not copy page for page what happened in the novel or comic. My best friend continually complains about The Walking Dead and Kick Ass being different to their source material...whether its trivial or not so trivial points. I don't particularly have a need to see a live action scene by scene

I don't particularly have a need to see a live action scene by scene rendition of what Ive already read on paper - how can knowing exactly how something is going to unfold be exciting to watch? For the record, I've read the brief Wiki summary of the World War Z novel - sounds awsome...so the movie is going to play it differently...that's okay So long as it's good...I'm going to watch it to enjoynot to nit pick.

It looks like Resident Evil had sex with 2012 and crapped out an even worse movie. It doesn't even come down to being a good or bad interpretation of source material, you can look at this trailer and you know what you are going to get. A crappy CGI filled zombie outbreak movie. It doesn't even look like the people tried to make this look good.

Yeah the liquid mass of zombies thing looks a little weird, but this still looks like it has the potential to be a badass film. If this tanks it's a pretty high-profile balls up for all concerned though. It's a decent trailer and should win over some; not all, of the doubters.

Well I'm neither a kid nor a fan of the Transformers movies - apart from the slightly odd zombie effects I just don't see much to really hate about this movie so far.

You must have very low expectations for movies like this to think it will win anyone over. I have yet to see anyone excited for this garbage besides kids who think the transformer movies are the best movies ever.

Looks like if Zombies and ID4 and 2012 and Brad Pitt had copulated.

I am a huge fan of the book and the wold that Max Brooks created going from a humorous book in the Zombie Survival Guide then taking the turn down the serious road with WORLD WAR Z. I have seen him speak several times and explain the origin of his ACTUAL fear of a zombie apocalypse. In these lectures he also explains he has NOTHING to do with the production of this film. He sold the rights. He gave the story and title away and then Brad Pitt perverted it. It is almost like he went to a adopt

It is almost like he went to a adopt another kid and decided "you know what, i should film a movie here, maybe that one I bought the rights to...not sure what it is, but I bet fans would love to see me use my pull and power to make the greatest zombie film ever...but instead I am going to throw a bunch of money at a cgi company and make super fast tidal waves of zombies and not take a hint that the book was so filled with stories that would make fans cringe in horror of a real word based horror story! I will just let my company jack up everything that the fans love and wont take any hints from budgeted stories like The Walking Dead...slow zombies?! Who would want that?! BLAH BLAH BLAH...diariah of the mouth and budget...". Should have just taken it simple, a unnamed man sitting at a U.N meeting explaining what happened years ago and why it never should have happened. Use stories selected from around the world to reach audiences and make a maximum impact of what the zombie outbreak meant to sections of the world. South Africa, Vatican City, Israel, China and of course Yonkers....damn you Brad Pitt....ugh...but I know i will still pay to see it is the problem. Yes they may not be able to translate such a in depth book...but they could have kept it in the same world. I mean hell...make the whole trailer a clip of Yonkers...now i wonder if that is even in the movie and that was the TURNING point in the WAR!

I was really excited to see the A-10's flyover, but then realized that's not what an A-10 sounds like. #nitpick .. Overall, not too sure how I feel yet.

When did Will Smith turn white and grow long hair, though?

Looks horrible...

It looks like Brad Pitt vs Zombies. Might as well be Land of the Dead 2 or 28 months later. The CGI looks horrible, the story is stupid. Why did they try so hard to fuck this up? He should be a reporter covering the aftermath of the outbreak like he was in the book. I still can't get over how bad this looks. I know they had issues while filming and you can tell but this looks horrible. Way to be a carbon copy of every other zombie movie.

WWZ in Name only

They (Book/Film) share the same title, but nowhere in this trailer did I see anything Max Brooks wrote about in his novel or the novels predecessor. Um, if I were Max Brooks, I would sue Paramount for slander :)

With all of that being said - I will watch this because I haven't paid for a movie in over a decade and because I have to see how bad they messed up. I do love me some Mr. Pitt too.

This looks like a fun thrill ride. What's wrong with you people?

1. Stop complaining when a movie isn't exactly like the book. They are different media. They have to be structured differently. If you've ever written a script and a book, or you have SEEN a movie or READ a book, you'll know that. Also, you've already read the book. If you want it exactly like the book, go read the book again.
2. Zombies don't actually exist. So they can be fast or slow in a movie. Either is correct. If you want slow zombies, go back and watch a movie where you liked the slow

Maybe one made back when they could ONLY make slow zombies because of movie technology. I, for one, like the idea of fast zombies, because they're FAST. If you can just run (or walk swiftly) away from your enemy, that's not very scary.
3. Why do you want to see the zombies in a trailer about a zombie movie? This is a TRAILER. A teaser to make you want more. So, if you want to see the zombies, the trailer has done its job. And also, it hasn't spoiled the movie for you. I don't want to see the zombies in the trailer. Pay your 15 bucks in the theatre and take your chances. If you need to know exactly what the zombies will look like, make your own zombie movie and watch that. Or write your own zombie book first, and then make your movie exactly like the book you just wrote.

I liked the trailer because it looks nothing like any other zombie movie. It looks epic.
I have a friend who was a stuntman in it, and he said that Brad Pitt was working as a true professional. Not just a big Hollywood star, but a real craftsman. It was nice to hear that not from a Making Of -movie but from a real source.

CGI? Why??

The first and biggest problem I have is the CGI. It seems a little to cartoon-y, and sucks all the tension out of what should be a tense and gripping thriller. I can accept the fact that every zombie movie from here on out has to have its own take on zombies to set itself apart. But a tide of zombies flowing through streets, and alleys?? Zombies making a zombie "ladder" to climb over a wall?? On paper it seems like it would work, but the execution on film seems to fall flat. CGI doesn't

This is O.K.

First off, this is not W.W.Z. That being said, it does have the Battle of Yonkers, the Winnebago and other elements of the book in there. This seems to me that they are trying to tell the story of the Narrator of the book before he writes it which seems like the right narrative for a film, especially if you want to have possible sequels, which the book does contain. The female paratrooper (my favorite), the family stranded in their own Winnebago in the Northeast or the deranged foreign

I remain open minded about this film.

Wow this looks amazing!...amazingly bad! Looks nothing like the book. And YES, it is important when adapting a book as a movie for that movie to represent the book well and do it justice (if it's a well written and good book). Not saying that a movie based on a book is a bad movie if it doesn't, but the movie better be damn good if this is the case! Jurassic Park and the Shinning are good examples.
Also, it doesn't help your movie when what you show in the trailer looks this silly! Especially

Also, it doesn't help your movie when what you show in the trailer looks this silly! Especially for a zombie movie. And screw the "fresh take on the genre" or the "new twist" or the "well zombies don't really exist so who cares". I assume the people saying these things haven't read the book, couldn't even be bothered with reading a book in the first place either. I assume that a lot of them also think that movies like Resident Evil are "entertaining movies" and that it's ok for vampires to sparkle and whatnot...

What's up with the annoying siren-like sound effect all through the trailer? Very distracting & annoying. As for the movie, I won't judge until I see the whole thing but looks more like some kind of rabies-inducing virus than an actual zombie apocalypse. Or those are some lame-ass zombies.
