Brad Pitt on a sequel to World War Z: "We're certainly talking about it"

Sep. 9, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

WORLD WAR Z surprised the hell out of a lot of people with how well it performed in theaters (domestic and internationally), but many wondered if it would be enough to warrant a sequel. Variety was at the TIFF and asked Brad Pitt (who is out promoting 12 YEARS A SLAVE) if a sequel was in the works for WORLD WAR Z:

"We’re certainly talking about it, yes."

Pitt goes on to say that there are a lot of ideas floating around due to the work they did with the first film, but the important thing is to make sure the script is right.

"We have so many ideas on the table from the time we spent developing this thing and figuring out how the zombie worlds work. We gotta get the script right first to determine if we go further."

Variety also says Paramount is definitely interested in a sequel with Pitt and his production company, Plan B. At one point WORLD WAR Z was going to be a trilogy, and Brad Pitt says some of the ideas for the sequels could come from those plans.

"We have so many ideas and so much information–we think we have a lot of stuff to mine from."

I'm not one of those people that hated WORLD WAR Z, but I certainly didn't think it was fantastic. Could there be a sequel? Well, yeah of course but with how much trouble they had with the first one, are they really willing to take that risk again? It may have worked (WORLD WAR Z did bring in over half a billion dollars worldwide) but lightening usually doesn't strike twice, especially when it comes to movies and their sequels.

Have to cancel out resolution of WWZ

I would be down for this. I wasn't wowed by the first movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. With all the information about the production that was leaked I thought it was going to be a disaster. But they would essentially have to undo the effectiveness of the "camouflage" . Maybe the zombies adapt or something over time. But on a completely different not I did love that a movie finally called them zombies, not walkers or biters or infected or anything other than zombie. They made it work and

Of course they need to get the script right first. While I did end up enjoying the finished product maybe they should have got the script right first before they started filming the first one. Then maybe they wouldn't have had to spend an extra $50 million to make the movie and it would be even more profitable. If they actually have a great and finished script when they start shooting a sequel I would hope they could bring it in on a much more reasonable budget and be a good movie.

I am really surprised there is love for the movie on this website. The initial reactions were hatred because it was nothing like the books. I saw it in the theaters, and didn't hate it either. I don't feel it was a zombie movie though. I guess I fall in line with Romero's view of zombies. If their not mindless shuffling corpses their not zombies. They were just virus infected people. I do hope if a sequel is made we get an R rating, and some rotten bloody zombies. I guess we will see. Wonder

Really enjoyed the movie

But the way they ended it, it makes no sense to do a sequel.

Loved the film

Bring in some more zombies...like maybe animals get infected.
One thing in the film that bugged me a tiny bit was when a zombie bit a person the zombie would move away from that person and not feed on him. They should maybe explain that not everybody turns into a zombie some people are just pure food, maybe.

WWZ was a solid movie, I was disappointed that they didn't adapt the book correctly but this movie was good for what it was. There are so many awesome stories that can be told from the book so hopefully they show up in this sequel.

WWZ was pretty good. And i welcome a sequel with open arms. Given that the first one didn't follow the book, i'm not expecting the sequel to either. I do think that there is a way to make the sequel similar to the book: The first movie takes place during the zombie epidemic, the sequel takes place after the war and Brad Pitt's character interviewing various people about their survival story during WWZ.

Not that I loved this movie, but I did think it was ok! How can there not be a sequel? They clearly set this up to be a franchise at the end of the film. If they don't make another ill look at this film as unfinished and a waste of time

Of course they're "talking about it", it's all part of the DVD / Blu-ray sales campaign for the "first" movie. They'll stop "talking about it" once they've sold enough units.

Here's the thing with WWZ, IMO. The financial success of the movie was a fluke, I think it reached it's gross at the box office because of a genuine interest/curiosity about the film. Once audiences saw the finished product and lackluster story, that was nothing like the books, the interest in WWZ as a film franchise ended. Given what the first movie was like, I think the best way to make a sequel succeed is to get some much better effects for the zombies, at least better cgi, get rid of the

Given what the first movie was like, I think the best way to make a sequel succeed is to get some much better effects for the zombies, at least better cgi, get rid of the ant colony effect from the first. And bring in 2-3 more lead roles - have the movies follow a few different plot threads from around the world that way the audience can get a perspective of how grand this event really is. And for god's sake, go for broke and make the thing R-Rated, when it comes to zombies the audience will come especially if it's r-rated.

Z had magnificent tension. I think a sequel would be better as they know what NOT to do production-wise. Make sure everyone jives with one another.

World War Z was OK on its own merits, just not the adaptation fans were hoping. If they do make a franchise off it, I think they should the sequels focus on different groups of people. No. 2 would be about Matthew Fox's character and his SWAT buddies surviving New Jersey and maybe segue into the Battle of Yonkers. No. 3 could focus on a group of regular civilians. And so on.

I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, more so than Iron Man 3, Man if Steel and Star Trek. Seems like every damn movie this year had at least a 2 after it. I'm torn on a sequel though. Part of me hopes they leave it be. Knowing Hollywood, they won't.

Although I really like World War Z, I'll stay on the fence for the sequel for now.

World War Z was awkward, dull, predictable, and pillowy. It was tolerable at best, and doesn't merit a second viewing.

World War Z surprised me. I was wholly expecting it to be an unmitigated disaster, but it wasn't. It kind of felt like 2012 meets Contagion. Not a great film but certainly entertaining and sufficiently thrilling in parts. Apparently, it's Brad Pitt's highest-grossing film ever. That combined with the open ending means a sequel doesn't seem too far out of the question. Hope Daniella Kerstesz is back as Segen; that character kicked ass.

I just watch it a few days ago and thought it was great, really surprised me - which is what I sense is a common opinion from many other comments I've seen. It was well paced and tense where it needed to be. The set pieces I really enjoyed and the cgi didn't bother me at all. I just read this morning what the original ending was and I'm glad we have the one that's in place now. I'd dig a sequel but not sure how it will hold up to this first part.
