Bradley Cooper is officially Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy

Aug. 30, 2013by: Alex Maidy

From rumor to reality, Bradley Cooper has officially been cast as Rocket Raccoon in Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. This marks the final character to be cast in the James Gunn directed superhero film assuming that Vin Diesel signs on the dotted line as Groot.

Reaction was mixed when rumors began circulating that Cooper would voice the raccoon character. Cooper does have that smart-ass delivery that will make Rocket come to life on the screen. I would have preferred to have Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler voice the character, but I am sure they were asking for a hell of a lot more money than the role warrants.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has already started filming in England and features a diverse cast that includes Chris Pratt, Benicio del Toro, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, and Karen Gillan. Pratt, who plays the lead role of Peter Quill recently made the statement that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is going to be one hell of a movie:

"It's the greatest movie of the 21st century! That's what I'll say. It'll be the CITIZEN KANE of movies other than CITIZEN KANE."

I am looking forward to seeing just how GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY turns out. Marvel's riskiest property also has one of the biggest casts outside of THE AVENGERS. Many of these actors are not as well known as Robert Downey Jr or Samuel L. Jackson, but I have a feeling that after August 1, 2014, they will be.

Good cast

Unfortunately - when all is said and done James Gunn is writer annd director - He's done NOTHING to inspire confidence. Face it - Scooby Doo was no prize. And Dawn was a freakin remake. I'm skeptical.

GotG flop

Ditto what Ocelot_Snake said. This movie has all the makings of a major flop.

Cooper's cool but...

Giamatti or Buscemi would have been amazing.
Sandler or Carrey? Really? I can't see anyone wanting that.

Who gives a Sh*t?

So brad cooper's voicing a raccoon. I don't know. There's nothing interesting about his voice. Why don't they get a good voice actor instead?

Jim Carrey? Adam Sandler? What a godawful terrible, terrible idea. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Bradley Cooper will be perfect. Looking forward to this even more.

the GotG movie must be from another universe.

seriously, you're telling me that Andy from Parks and Rec is playing the Space Hero lead, while Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are playing a raccoon and a tree?

Just a bit disappointed they took such an unspecific voice, for such a 'make it or brake it' character...
Curious to see how it turns out, anyway...

I guess...well...it could have been worse. Personally, I'd settled on Danny DeVito's voice after someone had suggested it on here. I also can't help feeling Marvel just want to use all A list and upcoming actors in as many roles as possible...so if WB's, for instance, approaches them...they'll have been "used" already in Disney's Marvel movies.

Cool!

I really think this movie is going to take a lot of people by surprise. Little kids are going to be asking for Rocket Raccoon toys like they ask for Iron Man ones now.

I can't believe anyone would seriously want Adam Sandler to voice this role. Is that what you want to see? Rocket Raccoon sounding like The Waterboy? Really??

Eh, not as exciting as I had hoped. Would have much rather have something closer to the voice actor from the games and cartoon. Guess they need a big name, but they could have picked someone who has a lot more personality in their voice. I mean, Cooper is cool, but as a voice actor? Not so convinced.

Nice choice. Seldom the voice actors (Diesel and Cooper) makes a movie more interesting than the "real" actors.

@Ocelot_Snake
Yeah, its high risk. But high risk also implies high potential return.

So sick of these roles going to white American males when they could have so easily cast a real talking raccoon.

If theres a chance for a box office dud from Marvel its this one. I had never even heard of GotG till the movie was announced, every other movie had at least name recognition. Hell I knew who Hawkeye was even though Ive never seen or read about him in anything

I'm totally digging this. There's several other actors that are capable of doing Rocket Racoon's voice and Cooper is definitely one of them. He may not seem like it but he can make it work with his level of talent. I can't wait for this to hit theaters next summer and throw everyone for a loop. It's sure to be a fun and kick ass time at the movies!

That line from Chris Pratt was taken completely out of context

I hope you realize. I'm sure it'll be a fun film, but if you read the article he's being totally sarcastic when he says that, I don't even think the cast expects it to be THAT good.

As for Rocket Raccoon, my dream choice would have been Steve Buscemi, but I suppose Bradley Cooper will work.

Hmmm

I have no idea how Bradley Cooper would do in a voice-over role, but animated films (especially DreamWorks) are littered with Hollywood stars who couldn't cut it in the voice booth (Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and Catherine Zeta-Jones, to name just three). Bradley Cooper may surprise me but I would have loved to have seen someone like John DiMaggio or Mark Hamill take on the role.

I think it's kinda funny...

...how they're like 2/3 of the way through shooting this movie and have only just now cast him as a voice actor. I'm aware that dialogue for CGI characters is always done in post-production, but still...just kinda seems weird. I wonder if the cast/crew would have interacted differently with the 'imaginary' character in their scenes if they knew what actor would be responding to them in the finished product. Gnomesayin'? I do think sometimes this method of doing everything separately can affect

I do think sometimes this method of doing everything separately can affect a film for the worse, because there's something to be said for the dynamics and chemistry between actors. Like, imagine if they had Bradley Cooper on set from day one acting out the scenes with the other actors. It'd probably all flow a hell of a lot more smoothly and organically and they MIGHT even end up with some cool alterations to the dialogue. Anyway...rant over...

Oh of course there would have been an actor on set playing Rocket Raccoon. He will be uncredited because he will have been digitally removed from the final film. A good example of this is the fact that James Earl Jones was not on the set with the other actors when they filmed the Star Wars movies.

Sandler?!

Thank god it wasn't Sandler, not enough dick and fart jokes In the script for him to sign on. As for Carey, he turned it down because the movie would be too violent.

Hmmm..

Whilst I'm sure that Cooper will be great, it does seem a bit of a waste of Cooper in a superhero role.

Having said that, I waited with baited breath for some spot on stunt casting (was quite disappointed when Rooker had another part instead), but perhaps not stunt casting the part will end up being the stronger decision in the long run.

I'm loving the casting...

...to Guardians of the Galaxy. They could have easily casted an established action star like Diesel or Cooper in the lead role, but instead opted for Chris Pratt (who I'm sure is going nail it). I love the amount of diversity. Diesel and Cooper are going to do great! I wonder if they're going to do mo-cap work, or stickly CGI? Either way, August 2014 won't come soon enough :D.

This has got to be one of the most diverse casts in any movie in recent memory. Whether it'll actually work and all these different pieces come together to make a good movie is still up for debate though, in my opinion. I know everyone in the comic book world is psyched for this movie, but I just don't see the general audience going for an entirely different cast of characters, led by a human from the 80's, random aliens, a talking tree, and a gun-toting raccoon. I definitely won't mind being

its kind of ironic that Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel (two guys that have been on many fanboy casting wishlists for various characters) have their first foray into the Marvel or DC world as voice actors.

Meh...

seems like a total waste of money to cast a famous actor who doesn't really have much distinction to his voice. I was really excited at the prospects of this racoon having a cockney accent.
