Bradley Cooper will head to Earth's deepest point in Max Landis' Deeper

Bradley Cooper Max Landis Deeper

It wasn't all that long ago when a Max Landis spec script was at the center of a Hollywood bidding war which ended when Netflix outbid the competition for BRIGHT, a supernatural cop thriller to be directed by David Ayer which is set in a world where magical creatures live side by side with humans and will star Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. Now The Wrap is reporting that a new spec script from Max Landis is in the midst of another bidding war. Luuucky.

The outlet reports that several major studios and financiers are all very interested in DEEPER, which is set to star Bradley Cooper and will be directed by Kornel Mundruczo (WHITE GOD). DEEPER will be a drama "about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces." Landis compared DEEPER to BIRDMAN, THE SHINING, LOCKE, 2001, and THE DESCENT, with a little Hayao Miyazaki thrown in for good measure. Certainly sounds like an interesting project and, as we definitely need more films set beneath the waves, I'm already intrigued.

Bradley Cooper's upcoming projects include Todd Phillips' WAR DOGS in which he'll appear alongside Miles Teller and Jonah Hill, as well as returning to voice Rocket in James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 which is set for a May 5, 2017 release.

...this sounds an awful lot like that "unfilmable" pitch he made about an Abyss-like movie set in the modern day that's secretly a sequel to Lord of the Rings.

Can't wait for Landis to bitch about this one when no one goes to see it.

I'm a fan of Landis, and good for him for finding success as a screenwriter. On a larger scale, I like this because it seems like a return to original, interesting scripts sold on spec rather than more and more scripts written by committee.

Sounds like a good psychological film. I wonder if it will primarily focus on just Cooper's character (ie Gravity, The Martian) or in fact an entire team.

Love him or hate him, I'll give Landis credit for making it happen; he's legitimately one of the most successful screenwriters in hollywood right now

Landis is a hack and quite literally only still gets work cause of his last name. He's written nothing but shit.

Oh, come on, man. John Landis hasn't made anything good in nearly 3 decades. Maybe he helped Max get a foot in the door, but that was a long time ago, and he's successful because he has good ideas and writes engaging scripts. When a movie bombs, it's not necessarily the screenwriters fault. Hell, read the Victor Frankenstein script; it's much, much better than the film they made.

In fact, Landis was being extremely generous when he said Victor Frankenstein was about 70% his original script. It looks way more like 40% if you compare them. And Chronicle was awesome.

That said, the movie he directed sucked. But hey, you can't always be good at everything.
