Bret Easton Ellis wants to adapt Fifty Shades of Grey

06.11.2012

Talk of the big screen version of E.L. James' FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is heating up and Bret Easton Ellis wants to adapt.

The American Psycho author took to his Twitter account to announce, "I'm putting myself out there to write the movie adaptation of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' ..." Later in the evening, Ellis contacted his agent to let him know he was interested in taking the job, "Completely committed to adapting Fifty Shades of Grey. This is not a joke. Christian Grey and Ana: potentially great cinematic characters."

He really wasn't joking. Ellis has gone out of the way to make himself available to take on the film. He continued to update via Twitter, "Okay. Today the team has been briefed and we will be approaching the studio this week about BEE adapting 'Fifty Shades of Grey' into a film."

Ellis has taken in the entire scope of the production. He already has actors in mind for the leads as well as a director. "I think David Cronenberg is a great idea for directing Fifty Shades of Grey and we worked together on American Psycho in its initial phase." In his opinion, the character of Christian Grey is "a writer's dream". He still has ideas on the matter even if it isn't up to him, "The casting of Christian in 'Fifty Shades of Grey' wouldn't be up to me but I have certain actors in mind. And a particular actress for Ana." He then went on to say, "Cronenberg and Alexander Skarsgård is a no-brainer. I've seen Alexander naked so many times at the gym that we both attend: perfect casting."

Ellis kept musing on...

"For Fifty Shades of Grey: David Cronenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, Bret Easton Ellis and who as... Anastasia???"

"I would love it if we lived in a world where Lena Dunham could be Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey but I don't think we do. I think she's hot."

"Tonight's epic fight on Girls between Allison Williams/Lena Dunham convinced me that either one of them could play Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey."

"Thinking more conventionally for Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey: Scarlett Johansson or Kristen Stewart. Alex Pettyfer as Christian: too

"Aaron Johnson as Christian Grey? In a perfect world it would be

"David Cronenberg directing. Bret Easton Ellis writing. Ryan Gosling acting. Fifty Shades of Grey team... Shades of Grey."

This turning into a film is inevitable. So would you rather have someone like Cathrine Hardwick behind it, or someone like Ellis who would bring some serious edge to it? I'd pick Ellis any day. The man is a genius at what he does.

Could be a perfect match

American Psycho was a great movie and I think Ellis would be the perfect guy to adapt Christian Grey to the big screen. And even to adapt this kind of story to the big screen. I'm currently reading the first book right now. For those on here so far that clearly decided to pre-judge the book without taking a quick peak inside, it's surprisingly a great read, well thought out story and completely captivating.

Please don't get Cronenberg directing this. Cause then you KNOW I'll have to see it . . . And my wife, who's on book 2, suggested Skarsgard the other night. During True Blood of course . . .

The book was quite the read, for it had a lot of simplicity in it. The writing itself was alright. But the detail of the Contract still gets me with unfathomable amusement in a weird way.

Lena Dunham? KStewart?

Gag me with a spoon. I really hope the studio doesn't give this guy a chance to open his mouth.

Ellis might not be a sympathetic guy and often talks a little too much out of the blue, but he is a genius writer. American Psycho and Less Than Zero absolutely deserve the critical acclaim it got and the attention in literary science for being milestones in postmodern hyperrealism

(p.s.: I so want to join that gym!)

I have not read Fifty Shades, but was discussing it with someone the other night and the whole time as they're demeaning the idea that anyone would read this I kept thinking to myself - this reminds me of Ellis. What would you think of me if you knew what American Psycho was like?

Erotic romance on screen

I love erotic romance (look what I do for a living) but the thought of Kirsten Stewart in a film based on a book that started as Twilight fan-fic makes me furious.

Having said that, I have no qualms with seeing Alexander Skarsgård naked on film, no matter how bad the source material.

Remember guys, this is the same guy who championed reality TV douchebag extraordinaire Scott Disick for the title role in the remake of America Psycho, if only because he bears a passing resemblance to Christian Bale and is a horrible person in real life.

He suggested Miles Fisher at the same time, who once made a music video re-enacting American Psycho. I don't think he was serious about Disick, but they were talking up a remake at the time, and so why not go for the genuine article.

I think the popularity relates to schools and libraries banning the books. Banned= whooo I gotta get that

Only thing you need to know about

Fifty Shades of Grey. It started out as Twilight fan-fiction. That pretty much says it all.

for crack smoker of the week goes to... Bret Easton Ellis.
