Bret McKenzie

Bret McKenzie is much more than a musician and songwriter. Sure he'll always be known for being a part of Flight of the Conchords and he won an Academy Award for the song "Man or Muppet" from THE MUPPETS (he's also writing some of the songs for the sequel MUPPETS MOST WANTED), but he's branched out lately (acting wise) with parts in THE HOBBIT and the upcoming AUSTENLAND with Keri Russell and JJ Feild.

Collider recently talked to with Bret McKenzie about AUSTENLAND and in the interview McKenzie revealed that he is currently working on a project with James Bobin (co-writer and director for THE MUPPETS) that he describes as a "fairy tale comedy musical" and says it will be similar to LABYRINTH.

I’m in the middle of a script for a kind of—it hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that.  I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. James Bobin’s helping me.  I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff.  [It’s] live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.

Bret McKenzie did say that the project is in the very early stages of development, but he does seem very excited by the idea.

No title yet but it’s definitely my favorite thing I’m working on at the moment.  It’s early, though, it’s early.  It’s still developing.

This sounds simply delicious. I love all the music Bret McKenzie has created and a fairy tale musical with him could be absolutely hilarious. Hopefully this project does come to fruition because it could be a ton of fun.

McKenzie’s next film AUSTENLAND will be in theaters in New York and L.A. on August 16th, 2013. A date for a wide release has not been announced at this time.
