Brian Cox is the latest human to cause the Rise of the Apes

07.13.2010

Already with an impressive cast that includes James Franco, Don Cheadle, Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow and Andy Serkis, RISE OF THE APES has added another talented actor to its roster. Brian Cox, who previously worked with director Rupert Wyatt on THE ESCAPIST, has signed on to play something of a villain. While he's not a villain for our humans, he's the owner of a wildlife sanctuary who runs said facility with a complete lack of compassion for the animals. One would guess this would come back to bite him in the ass (literally?).

The script for the film was written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, which may mean that Scott Frank's CAESAR, the basis of this story, may have been completely rewritten and his writing credit removed. I was hoping that APES would have some sort of presence at Comic-Con this year but Fox doesn't have any Hall H time reserved to sneak out the cast (I suppose it's possible to have a teaser banner up on the convention floor).

Filming on RISE OF THE APES is set to begin next month for a June 24, 2011 release date.

I think they should do the smart thing by having the costumes slightly mixed in with some cgi and add a gritty color pallete to it.

The prequel idea is faulty by nature. We already know the ending. But I'm an Apes fan, so I'm intrigued. I even wouldn't mind a sequel to the Burton flick. I didn't hate it.

The sequel to the burton flick should have happened because he left the movie with a crazy cliffhanger. I remember that being the WTF! moment in the theater.

Any movie with Brian Cox is a winner for me regardless of the stupid title.

Man this is going to be as stinky as Burton's "Apes" movie. There's really no need for this movie at all.

Still not crazy on this film being made at all, but hot damn, it's got one hell of a cast, that makes me think there might be some hope after all.

Tidbit:

With today's motion capture technology I'd rather have cgi apes of people in costumes.

Also, Cox in this film has spiked my interest even further.

Cox plays a good villian, so this is great casting in my opinion. This movie might actually turn out to be good in the end.

I like the cast they have put together for this flick. Why not add some Cox to the mix?
