Broad City scribes reportedly tapped to write female 21 Jump Street spinoff

04.29.2015

Tracking Board is reporting that Sony is developing a female-led 21 JUMP STREET spinoff, and Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs have been hired to write the script. Aniello also directed several episodes of the Comedy Central series, and Downs has appeared on it as Abbi's boss, Trey. The duo also wrote and directed the short films Emmy Training Day and Life After Emmy.

TB doesn't have any additional details about the project, but the site does say the screenplay will be based on the tone of the previous Jump Street movies.

I'm not saying it won't work, but with a 22 JUMP STREET sequel in the works and talks of a possible Jump Street/Men In Black crossover film, do we really need a female spinoff? And did Sony not see the negative reaction to Paul Feig's all-female GHOSTBUSTERS? With Channing Tatum and Anthony and Joe Russo also developing a GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, perhaps Sony should just combine all three franchises. However, I doubt many of you are down for GHOSTBUSTERS & MIB OF JUMP STREET.

Who would you like to see play the leads in the 21 JUMP STREET spinoff?

Meh.

This will serve as a head fake towards female inclusion, but its really just another way for a studio to try and milk a successful franchise. That said, I would be ok with it if it starred Jenko and Schmidt's female counterparts from the first movie. That would be kind of cool. I don't know if Dakota Johnson is available with her commitment to the 50 SHADES of GRAY nonsense, but she is at least seen as something of a star now.

Oh Sony... you and your female version of a franchise thing. Yet you couldn't put together a Spider-Woman movie. Oh well, there's always WIB...

Because nothing says comedy like older women trying to look younger to fit in with a certain group. Oh wait they do that everyday on the Bravo channel. Casting choices; Rebel Wilson=Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum=Julianne Hough (they both started off as dancers first, and have now proven...they can't really act either.) Yeah I think I will pass on this one.

Do we need it? Of course not. We also don't need 1,000 comic book movies but the fanboys never complain about that the way they do about movies starring (gulp) women.

What is up with the "female Version" trend? Is there any movie that created that kind of buzz for this concept or even idicated that there is Money to earn with it. Cause quite honestly I donīt get which fangroup is supposed to like it?!

The reason is two-fold: 1) It's been established over the last 10 or so years that females can bring in the crowds for genre fare as well as male stars, if given an actually good or interesting vehicle (such as Gravity, The BLind Side, LUCY or Bridesmaids or, I guess, The Heat...ahem. cough Sandra Bullock wishes she could make Ms Congeniality 3 ahem.) amongst other major successes. But instead of Hollywood and the actresses stepping back and saying "This is our moment! Lets make it count!" they

But instead of Hollywood and the actresses stepping back and saying "This is our moment! Lets make it count!" they said "Hey, everybody is doing re-boots and sequels...why not just do 'female version of insert aging iconic franchise title here?" And now we're suffering for it when these women could be making their own iconic and original films. It's sad, but I kinda get why it's happening...Still sad.

who would I like to see play the leads?

Hm, I GOT IT! How about Meryl Streep? OK, seriously this should not happen. The Expenda-belles (concept); I was ok with it. Female Ghostbusters; I still think it could work, female 21 Street Jump Street?? I'm kinda torn here, unless they strive for continuity with Schmidt & Jenko's 'rivals' from the first movie so that we see what they were up to when those guys were doing the H.F.S case otherwise this will tank.

Horrible, unfunny ladies

These ladies are NOT funny. Their show sucks and its just horrible comedy central trash.

Why is there a battle of the sexes going on in Hollywood? If there is a successful franchise starring a guy, studios hire the cheapest females possible to try and remake the magic. It just creates a horrible knock off and is never taken seriously.

Christ almighty. How do you overcome sexism in the movies by constantly making it not just the issue, but the selling point? Hey its an all female A-Team! And here comes the all female Predator movie! All female transformers anyone? Its a crap, lazy new trend. New original roles please. Have a little faith in your female leads! Hollywood! Put on the dunce hat, face the wall and think about what you've done!

How about some ORIGINAL ideas for female led movies...

Rather than just, lets do a female version. If I was a woman I'd finding it pretty patronising that they way they go for equality is shitty spin offs of an idea that was already successful as a male led movie. Lets have some original roles. Plenty of excellent female writers and directors out there. USE THEM!

Hang the fuck on though... If this trend continues I want equality for the men, starting with Thelma & Louise. Expecting the new version to be called Ted & Lewis

*facepalm

In our quest for equality, we just keep dividing ourselves more and more - well, the PC pussies and Hollywood do anyway. And what does this really mean? Women don't have original ideas, so they have to gender swap a male-led film? Wow, if this is the trend, I can't wait for the male version of Steel Magnolias.

At this rate Hollywood might as well just do "male version", "female version" "black version" "white version" "Chinese version", etc. to appease every single social group. Seriously- I mean, I get why: White Men have had all the fun in Hollywood for a century and now it's time for non white non male performers to get their chance. But I challenge them to give us original stories and franchises that aren't just the non-white-non-male version of a previous and fairly iconic property. This is why

This is why Kristen Wiig should have turned Bridesmaids into the Female "The Hangover" trilogy (not saying sequels were a good idea) rather than, I dunno, stomping on all of our collective millenial childhood memories or older by re-booting Ghostbusters just because Dan Aykroyd is obsessed and Bill Murray has better ways to spend his limited time on earth.

Skynet.. wouldn't 21 Jump Street already be the "white" version? And why are you talking about riots on a movie website on an article about a 21 Jump Street spinoff? I guess you're one of those people who look at everything with race goggles on.
