Bryan Cranston denies the rumors that he has been cast as Lex Luthor

09.03.2013

As Bryan Cranston's run on BREAKING BAD comes to an end in just a few weeks, rumors have the star taking on the pivotal role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming MAN OF STEEL sequel SUPERMAN VS BATMAN. Fans have been torn over which bald-headed star would be better suited for the iconic Superman foe: Cranston or Mark Strong. As of the most recent rumor, Cranston would take the role of Luthor, Strong would reprise his Sinestro role from GREEN LANTERN, and all would be well in the DC Cinematic Universe.

But now Cranston is going to pop our bubble, at least until the finale of BREAKING BAD airs, after which the rumor claims he will be announced as Luthor. In an interview with Bostom.com, Cranston refuted the casting as well as the touted multi-film deal that would come with it.

“I’ve heard that too… Six? This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”

In between seasons, Cranston has grown his hair back for various roles in movies like ARGO and TOTAL RECALL. The shaved head is specifically for his role as Walter White on BREAKING BAD. While I think he would be a phenomenal choice for Luthor, I cannot argue with his denial. But, he may just be playing along per studio mandate until they are ready to make a formal announcement.

If Cranston is cast, we will find out when BREAKING BAD ends in just about a month. SUPERMAN VS BATMAN is slated to begin shooting early in 2014 and will hit theaters on July 17, 2015.

NOW hold on

In Man of Steel they clearly tell Kal that he's proof that their is life on other planets which means both DC universes cannot exist with each other because neither super heroes were mentioned in each others movies. wouldn't they mention a giant yellow fear monster attacking earth in Man of Steel or mentioning metropolis being destroyed in Green Lantern????

It's a good point, but they can easily remedy that. All they need to do is establish that Green Lantern took place either shortly after Man of Steel or at a concurrent time as Man of Steel. That way they avoid the fact that no one knew about aliens prior to Man of Steel.

Damn.

At first I didn't like the rumor of Cranston for Lex. Too similar to his role on BB. But after seeing that fan made trailer, I'm just thinking "Cast him cast him cast him!" Tremendous.

Why do we have to wait until the Breaking Bad finale ?

Would they really wait to announce it then if he didn't get the part?

Great actor, but I wouldn't mind someone that's a bit younger.

You tell'em Brian

He only said what I've been saying all this time in response to these one-dimensional, often silly (Vin Diesel? Jason Statham?Really!?), fan castings. Having a shaved head is NOT an acting ability or a qualification for this part. Literally every actor could be Lex Luthor if that was the case. It's something anyone can do.

I'd been kind of skeptical of this rumor since it was made. It just seemed too much like they were trying to ride the Breaking Bad wave.

I'm sure Cranston would be great in the role, but I'd like to see them go with someone a little younger for this version of Luthor. More Rosenbaum from Smallville than Hackman from Superman.

Bald guy casting???

If you watch the video on YouTube of the DC Justice League VG movie, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Lex Luthor looks modeled after Bruce Willis and Cyborg looks modeled after Wesley Snipes.

Have him play Jim Gordon...again

Yes it would be cool him playing Lex but that would be too much like him playing Walter White in another form. I want him as Gordon just let that sink in and let the cool thoughts wash over you

I hadn't heard the rumors until now, but I don't think it's a bad one. He would make a fantastic Lex. I think he is being extremely humble here in his ability to play the part with his quote on the bald aspect. I don't think he was rumored simply for being bald. Although he may not be getting the attention in Hollywood he truly deserves, I can't think of anyone who doesn't know who this guy is and thinks he's a terrible actor. Cranston is awesome and I sure hope he knows it.

I think he would make a good Lex Luthor if he gets cast, but if he doesn't its not a deal breaker for this movie.

I like his bald guy quote. It does seem true that every last actor who is or has been bald at one point has been suggested for Luthor. How about maybe Joseph Fiennes?

Ralph's brother Joseph, aka William Shakespeare. I think he could be a pretty good Lex.

Actually I would prefer Ralph. I always thought of Joseph as a pretty boy, even though he's a good actor but he's definitely not intimidating. Ralph on the other hand can be one intimidating SOB

@LelekPL: I totally get what you mean about Joseph Fiennes seeming like a pretty boy. I Think Ralph Fiennes would be an excellent Luthor; it's just that "typecasting" thing again, seeing as how he was already Voldemort. But yes, it certainly could work. [link]20Luthor.jpg

I couldn't really see him as Luthor at first, but after watching the last few episodes of Breaking Bad this season, he is absolutely the best choice for the part. It would be great if DC actually did cast Cranston as Lex and brought back Strong for Sinestro. It would have DC at least going in the right direction so far in terms of casting their characters and setting up the continuity from Green Lantern.
