Bryan Cranston is interested in taking on the role of Lex Luthor

Aug. 13, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Who is Superman without Lex Luthor? For some, he might be the essential Supes villain. Luthor's personality makes a story worth reading. What will he say this time? What could he possibly have up his sleeve? Why is he such a self-involved dick? He's a character we love to hate and vice versa.

Recently there was a rumor that Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston were contenders for the baddie role. While many of us praise Cranston for his work on BREAKING BAD especially since he's shown that he can play such a role, it's much easier to see someone like Strong take on Luthor.

Cranston is the first to comment on the rumor:

Give me a call. I like Lex Luthor. I think hes misunderstood. Hes a loveable, sweet man.

I can't pinpoint exactly what it is that Cranston is lacking when it comes to the criteria an actor must have to play the role. He's a fantastic actor and pulls off that bald look like no other. Doesn't matter to me if he lands it or not, I'll still be purchasing a ticket to see SUPERMAN and BATMAN beat the shit out of each other.

Extra Tidbit: Cast This: Lex Luthor edition coming soon!

Just think. If it hadn't been for The X-Men movies, we would have had Patrick Stewart as Luthor. He was the only good bald actor alive.

I still like Denzel Washington for Luther. I can also see Vincent D'Onofrio, may have to lose some weight though.

Rooker is Lex Luthor!

Cranston would make a much better Commissioner Gordon as he did in the animated feature Batman: Year One.
As for Mark Strong....he is Sinestro. Give Rooker the shot.

I'm convinced that at this point in his career Cranston has the talent to play anyone and make them a fascinating character. Plus as we've seen from Breaking Bad he has the ability to play a ruthless businessman.

Michael Rooker would kill it as Lex!!!!

Rooker is the clear choice for Lex. Lex hates Superman. Not because Superman is powerful but because he isn't human. It could be said that Luthor is "prejudice" when it comes to Superman. Look how well Rooker pulled off Merle's racist side on Walking Dead. He could easily handle this side of Lex. Rooker has an amazing physical presence as well, something that Lex would need. Lex as portrayed in the comics has to be the badest human in the room (with exception of Bruce Wayne). Rooker can also be

Rooker can also be extremely sinister when its called for. eople keep saying that "Rooker's a Marvel guy now". That's crap. He is an actor. His little supporting role in GOTG wouldn't keep him from playing Lex. Its like Stallone told Rourke about Iron Man 2, Its not like he's going to get his own spin-off movie.

Strong is a better choice, but Cranston isn't a bad idea. The guy is a fantastic actor and knows how to play a spiteful prick. Just as long as he doesn't play a variation on Heisenberg... I have a fear Cranston will end up typecast, but so far that doesn't seem to be happening, thankfully.

Nobody's even come close to getting Lex Luthor's character right in a movie so far. Luthor has very specific reasons for going up against Superman, not just because he's had some hackneyed scheme foiled. He's a much better character when you can really appreciate where he's coming from. Figuring that out is as important as the actor they choose to portray him.

I just think Mark Strong is a better fit. He just has that intensity about him. Don't get me wrong Cranston is awesome. Just not as Luthor.

Cumberbatch.....

After watching him as Kahn (despite a lackluster script to work with), I'm convinced that no one could play Luthor with the same level of intellect, arrogance, menace, and find a way to make him human as much as Benedict Cumberbatch. The guy is simply a force of nature.

Cranston is brilliant, but he's not Lex. You need to imagine Lex being able to stand in front of Superman, unafraid, and not feel like Superman is going to squash Lex with one finger (even though we know he could). It's a presence thing. Strong has that particular something that can make you suspend disbelief in this particular instance. If Cranston is going to play anyone in the DCU, he has to be Commissioner Gordon. He's perfect to play Gordon's battered integrity, and if they were to go down

I'm assuming you don't watch Breaking Bad because that very presence you speak of is something Cranston has shown time and again on the show. From "say my name" to "tread lightly", he definitely has the ability to stand next to people much more powerful than and leaving them scared.

I watched the first season of Breaking Bad but haven't caught up with the rest as yet... I take your point, though. I'm sure he got more badass in later seasons. I guess 'stature' is probably what I meant, more than presence. I always felt Lex was best portrayed as someone in tremendous physical shape--as if he saw himself as being the best of humanity, not just for his intelligence, but for how rigidly disciplined he was in every aspect of his life. He is a man in control of his entire

He is a man in control of his entire universe -- financially, politically, physically, emotionally. But to be fair, there have been many incarnations of Lex where he wasn't exactly what you call fit... that's my personal preference coming in with the Lex I want to see on screen.

For the last time...Terry O' Quinn!

The greatest thing about Zack Snyder - for me at least - is his ability to cast the perfect people in his movies. That's why I'm not all that worried about who Batman will be. From Gerard Butler to Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Browning to Russel Crowe, Henry Cavill to Michael Shannon. That being said, I'd love to see Terry O' Quinn take on Lex Luthor. Like I've said before, he's got the mild-mannered face with the "I'm a psycho" eyes.

The voice

He just doesn't have the voice. Jim Gordon, yes, not Lex Luthor.
Not that the man can't act. He's one of my favorite actors... ever. He could play Dora the Explorer and knock it out of the park. But that "thing" he's missing to become a worthy Lex Luthor is the voice. It's unfortunately all wrong for the part.

Walter White as Lex Luthor?

Hell yes! The man has shown over the course of five seasons he can be a chameleon and a master manipulator. I know Strong was the other viable candidate, but he should stick to being Sinestro (he was the only good thing about GL). Give Cranston the role he deserves.

I think Cranston would be awesome as Luthor. I have nothing against Strong. I think he is a terrific actor but he has played so many villains already. I have said this before but they already have an established world for the Green Lantern, which Strong is Sinestro, so casting strong as another major villain in the DC universe could be problematic. I do think that even though The Green Lantern didn't do well they should maintain what they have created even if they introduce a new Lantern in

Can they please do a different villain? Lex has been done so many times. Why not start fresh and distinguish the franchise by taking a different villain and going in a different direction.

funny thing happened on my way to take the brownies outta the oven...

funny, i was flipping through channels and saw some movie on, one of the actors of this movie had me immediately thinking he was good for Lex, the problem was I didnt know his name, so i just went online and searched for another movie this dude was in, after finding this dudes name, i realize this is one of the people you all where refering to, Mark Strong. Something about this dude screams Lex to me. But I am also a Cranston fan, since Malcolm in the Middle, so whoever one gets the role is

Again, no. No bald-headed criminal mastermind Cranston plays will be able to survive the inevitable comparisons to Walt.

Oooh, Johnny Depp was great as Edward Scissorhands...so lets cast him as every kooky pale-faced protagonist we can think of. This is the same mindset, and its terrible and lazy.

How incredibly convenient this 'Strong, Cranston' rumor pops up the week before their respective shows premiered back-to-back last Sunday. You're getting trolled by AMC's marketing

Would rather see him as Jim Gordon, or preferably not in anything written by David S Goyer whatsoever. It was bad enough that he was in that garbage Total Recall remake. More Argo, less Goyer!

I agree that Terry O'Quinn would be an awesome Luthor and it would be unexpected. On the Lost note I think that casting an older Batman like they supposedly want to do, Matthew Fox would be awesome as Batman. Now if they have an older batman then they need an older Gordon. A Gordon in at least his sixties is what they should go with. Although I wouldn't be disappointed if Cranston was cast as Gordon.
