Rumor: Bryan Cranston may be cast as Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman so that Mark Strong can return as Sinestro

Aug. 23, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Take this with a grain of salt, but we may be on the verge of another major announcement regarding the MAN OF STEEL sequel and the future of the DC Cinematic Universe. Notoriously unreliable site Cosmic Book News has unveiled a new exclusive regarding the recent Ben Affleck casting as Batman that we just need to share with you. Again, there are no other sources for this story as of yet, but all of the pieces fit together so nicely it warrants discussion.

Cosmic Book News sources claim that Ben Affleck was actually third on the list to be the new Caped Crusader, but Karl Urban's schedule couldn't be accomodated and #1 choice Tyler Hoechlin lost out based on Affleck's dedication to the source material. That dedication apparently became evident during his run to potentially direct JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Affleck's run as Batman, as claimed by the site, will be for around 13 films including standalone Batman movies as well as appearances in other DC films. Warner Bros. may be aiming for a universe that crosses over a lot more than what Marvel and Disney have put forth.

Still with me? Now, Bryan Cranston and Mark Strong's names have already popped up multiple times as contenders to play Lex Luthor due to their intense acting abilities and well-regarded bald heads. If all turns out according to this source, once BREAKING BAD ends the current final eight episodes of it's run on AMC, Cranston will be announced as the new Luthor. This leaves the door open for Strong to return as Sinestro from the already established GREEN LANTERN film. Does this reopen the door for Ryan Reynolds to return?

Cranston would be locked in for potentially 6-10 appearances across the DC films, which would definitely make him a formidable adversary across the entire DC platform of films. Having Strong as well as Sinestro, the best part of GREEN LANTERN, would also be solid. If they are truly committed to that many movies, Marvel will definitely have some competition.

Where the article loses me is the potential for Ben Affleck's buddy, Matt Damon, to jump into the fray. They mention he may be considered for Aquaman or Martian Manhunter, two polar opposite roles and completely wrong for Damon. That part made me cry bullshit on the whole story, but then again, who saw Affleck as Batman coming at all?

MAN OF STEEL 2 aka BATMAN VS SUPERMAN will open July 17, 2015.

Report: Cranston is Luthor

Rolling Stone is reporting he has been cast. Haven't seen the story on here so I thought I would share. Comes from not the greatest source but Rolling Stone is running the story.

"Affleck's run as Batman, as claimed by the site, will be for around 13 films" [link] I am not laughing because of Affleck being cast as Batman, but one 13 movies, from DC/WB, I will believe when I see them. They have a hard time doing one right (other than Batman, and even there...).

This kind of sounds like too much bullshit. It really provides no proof or reasoning to their claims. It just sounds more like a big fan's fantasy for what he wants in terms of a DC universe.

Fuck it. If they're gonna cast Ben Affleck as Batman, they might as well cast Vin Diesel as Lex Luthor.

The rumor that Mark Strong is being kept to reprise the role of Sinestro makes me happy. No matter what they do to the Green Lantern franchise whether they reboot it or whatever they need to keep him around because he was te best part of the flick.

Still don't believe the report but...

Supposing everything in the report is true...

If Affleck has a 13 film deal and Cranston has a 6-10 film deal... I wonder what deal they will be getting Cavill on for?

I guess they could insert Batman (and Superman?) into "lesser" hero flicks to get the general public more interested? I don't know if they intend on making solo films for ALL the JL but I can imagine Martian Manhunter and Cyborg as a tough sell to the wider audience.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I also hope,

This may be an unpopular opinion but I also hope, within those 13 films they manage to fit a decent story arc for Robin. I'd like to see his journey from sidekick to hero in his own right, taking him into a Nightwing movie maybe?

I could see them glossing over the likes of Todd and Brown etc... But surely Grayson and Drake have earned their places in what sounds like a massive cinematic universe plan?

Maybe get can fit Karl Urban in there somewhere, with less commitment?

I'm personally routing for Odette Annabel as Wonder Woman

@Nautilus

Totaly agree with Alexander Skarsgrd. Too bad Aquaman is lame. Unless writers gives him a fresh surprising storyline and make it fit well in the structural arc.

interesting...

I like what I'm hearing. If DC truly intends to go this route it would certainly distinguish itself apart from Marvel. If characters were more 'always around and aware' rather than spotlighted solely on them you could create massive character buzz as to who appears in which films. Just because it's a Superman movie doesn't mean The Flash can't just pop in.

Matt Damon...lol. If I had to choose, I see him working better for Martian Manhunter than Aquaman. I don't thin k I could take

Affleck is signed on for 13 films? We'll probably get a Dark Knight Returns or Batman Beyond by then. I'd go with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for Aquaman, though. Matt Damon as either him or Jonzz kills the credibility of this story for me.

Strong as Sinestro was the best part of Green Lantern. I don't think it was a bad film but I can see why it's been so disliked, and it is very much an also-rans effort when stacked up against the stuff Marvel has been giving us. But a Sinestro-centric sequel

I'm taking this news with a grain of salt but if it is true then I'm liking the direction. Strong played Sinestro like he was born too. That was one of the good things that film had and I'm glad WB may recognize that. Do not bring back Reynolds as Hal and cast a new actor. Its an exciting time to be an comic fan right now.

The fact that they claim Tyler Hoechlin was the #1 choice for Batman proves the story is false.

Hoechlin is only 25, the study itself said that we'd be getting an established Batman in his 30's or 40's.

Nope

Sorry, don't buy this at all

I think the only truth could be that Bryan Cranston is going to be cast as Luthor.

Everything else sound just a bit too fanciful. 13 films without even a taste test of Affleck as seems a little extreme. At least when Marvel offered Jackson his 9 picture deal he'd at least cameoed- there was a buzz and marvel knew the public was digging the prospect. On the flipside, Evans was offered a 9 pic deal but bargained it down to 6 because he didn't want it to be

On the flipside, Evans was offered a 9 pic deal but bargained it down to 6 because he didn't want it to be all he was doing. I'd find it more believable had Affleck signed for Batman v Superman, justice League and 2 or 3 solo batflicks.

Unless they intend on Batman showing up in a post credit sequence in EVERY OTHER HERO film?

Sorry to say also, the mere mention that Karl Urban was the first choice sounds very "fanboy". The general public/fans were routing for Urban but didn't anyone even get a hint that he was actually in contention? Everyone seemed shocked when Affleck was announced but a couple if weeks ago I read an article naming a handful if actors who were screen testing with Cavill - Affleck was on that list.

I would have LOVED Urban to get the role , but I don't believe he was the studio top choice.

Then there's the Green Lantern rumour. Part of me wants it to be true- I think under proper direction a new GL film with Strong and Reynolds(?!) could be awesome and then you've got Reynolds to join Cavill and Affleck in the JL movie.

But the Damon stuff... No. That bit alone pulls away the tapestry of the whole article.

Evans was signed for 6 movies. But him being cast as Cap for the Cap movie kinda forced them to sign him for a couple more what with Cap being in the Avengers. But 13 movies is a whole other thing! DC has a hard time putting out one movie!

Definitely taking this with a huge grain of salt

For Affleck to commit to being Batman for more than three movies would have been already hard enough to believe, but 13? Are they trying to make him Nick Fury? And Cranston as Lex makes sense because Strong needs to remain Sinestro, but would Cranston really sign a 6-10 film deal, I think so.

FAN BOYS and GIRLS UNITED

WB must be kicking themselves watching Marvel and Disney laugh all the way to the bank since they've made more money than some countries are worth with The Avengers based characters. I can see WB is dropping the truck in 5th gear getting the DC characters and movies into the mix big time. The Dark Knight movies certainly proved that Batman is very bankable. WB is just slow on the get go. I can see all of this leading up to a HUGE Justice League series as well. It's really WB/DC world to

WB is just slow on the get go. I can see all of this leading up to a HUGE Justice League series as well. It's really WB/DC world to have it's day. As long as it's done right. The characters are just as strong and the blueprint was set by Paramount and now Disney/Marvel are franchised and have the strong fan base. That fan-base is long longer two separate camps. It used to be your either DC or Marvel. WB is finally realizing that the two camps are no longer segregated. The Fandom demands superior movies with writing and plots that warrant ponying up $12 a ticket. And then there's the X-Men which will continue for quite a while as well. Another blueprint for WB to exploit DC's characters. I'm just surprise that it has taken WB to get off the pine and grab a bat and start swinging for the fences instead to playing small ball. They have the property and characters and the other studios have set the bar. There's too much money to sit on it.

Now someone like Affleck has turned into a bankable recognized actor. Whether he's right for Batman or not, only time will tell. I wish it was Urban though. He got bad deal with Dredd and he would have been able to take Batman on where Bale left off. One thing is for damn sure, Benny is going to have to seriously up his game if this is going to work because Bale set the bar high and Batman vs. Superman is obviously going to the one of the biggest launching pads ever for the DC franchises if they are to even come close to what Disney/Marvel and Fox as been able to do with their franchises. The pressure is on not just Affleck but the WB and the fandom loyalty is definitely at stake.

So GREEN LANTERN actually made money?

or DC/Warner wants to use Sinestro in another property? Either casting is good, and interesting if they want to cross characters over into other universes.

As for Karl Urban, perhaps people didn't he's already involved in a certain movie series based on a venerable sci-fi franchise . . .

If all of this turned out to be true, then it would be fantastic to have Strong return as an established Sinestro, along with introducing Cranston as Luthor. Then hopefully if they get Strong back, then they can get Reynolds back (thumb me down all you want for that last sentence, I don't care).

The only thing I dislike is having Matt Damon playing either of those roles. Terrible miscasting.

So Affleck won't have time for other movies in his life, and his 13th time as Batman he'll be 65 years old for the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns ? 13 films... Come on.

Regarding the idea that Urban was too busy... I can't imagine they wouldn't have tried to find a way to make it work, but he does have a commitment to a new Fox TV series that could have gotten in the way.

Not if you're contractually obligated with another studio. Even if he wanted to do it, if he is already booked to do something else, which I believe he is as he has a new show starting this year, you can't just walk out on it. Not without being sued.

Thirteen films?! I call bullshit on that. I have been carrying the flag for Affleck ever since the big announcement last night but thirteen films seems like overkill even if they are indeed small appearances in other DC superhero films. The guy is a busy actor/director and I'm sure he's going to want to get back behind the camera at some point. I'm calling bullshit on that note.

I have no problem with Cranston playing Luthor. He can bring the gravitas that he clearly displays on BREAKING BAD

Let's just get the other "rumors" out of the way.

Matt Damon as Aquaman? Jennifer Garner as Wonder Woman? Casey Affleck as The Flash? Anyone else in Ben Affleck's contact list that might be rumored for a role in the next few months? Kevin Smith?

Okay Okay. I know this is to be taken with a huge grain of salt. But if we were to take this as the truth Affleck around for 13 films? I have been sticking up for Affleck for the last 24 hours but 13 films. What is he going to be Batman into his 60s? He isn't that young of a guy anymore.
