Bryan Singer hints that the villain in X-Men: Days of Future Past may be Apocalypse

Mar. 11, 2013by: Alex Maidy

So it seems that THE AVENGERS will not be the only Marvel franchise to introduce a major villain in an upcoming film. From the looks of it, one of the X-Men's major adversaries may be the big baddie in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The good folks over at Bleeding Cool seem to have put two and two together to uncover this news.

In a recent interview with Singer, the site asked him if he would ever consider using Apocalypse as the main antagonist in a future movie. What was Singer's reply?

“I can’t tell you…”

Not exactly a confirmation, but they continued to probe about the ancient villain. They described Singer as nervous at being asked these questions directly. And Singer followed up with this.

“This is how it gets started, when somebody starts piecing the little bits together…"

Here's a little back story for those of you unfamiliar with Apocalypse: Apocalypse is a mutant born 5000 years ago in Akkaba, and was abandoned as an infant due to his unnatural appearance (gray skin and blue lips). As the millennia pass, Apocalypse travels around the world to determine if his time of testing has come. He appears throughout history, encouraging civilizations to worship him as a god from several ancient mythologies and testing their strength by manipulating them into fighting wars of conquest, and claiming to have brought "growth, judgment, and destruction." He battles the X-Men on numerous occassions, including the very famous arc know as Age of Apocalypse, which involves time travel and alternate histories. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

Could this be the role that Peter Dinklage was cast for? We were told before that Dinklage would not be altered on screen and Apocalypse is a very large character. Apocalypse would also be a character that could re-unite Magneto and Xavier's mutant teams to battle a larger foe. This could be quite a large endeavor and would point to Fox's attempt to match the audacity of Disney and Marvel. Or, could this be the setup to introduce the villain for the follow up to X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST?

Looks like we will find out when the movie is released on July 18, 2014.

If he is including Apocalypse in this one, it had better be at the very end to open him up for the next installment. Remember, in the comics...SPOILER*********

the X-men saved the world from a Sentinel run future but only to return and find out the future is now the Age of Apocalypse. This looks like the story arc they are going with so I'm betting on a brief cameo at the very end of the film. Also, TOO MANY CHARACTERS!!

Wolverine?

Could we see Wolverine have his skeleton ripped out by Magneto at some point only to have Apocalypse infuse it back in a later film?

No way

apocalypse should be used in a future story line, and not wasted in this, with all the actors already on board you wouldnt be able to do the character justice, save him for the third first class, or maybe a 4th xmen movie

But...

If Singer is already planning a sequel (or even a trilogy) then can he get all these actors to come back? Are they going to sign on for two or three movies? Is this why Vaughn dropped out, because he didn't want to commit to more than one movie? Can they have kept this secret for all this time?

I think with all these characters there may be two movies coming, perhaps with one called Days of Future Past and the other one called Days of Future Present. I agree that having Sentinels and

I agree that having Sentinels and Apocalypse in one film is too much. I think that what we are going to see is the X-Men trying to change history and they make things worse and Apocalypse becomes the villain in the sequel. I think this could work.

With almost all the original actors showing excitement to return, one would guess Singer and Fox have something big in store for the franchise. This Days of future past its like their first Crossover, and since Singer has recently said he has some ideas of how to continue the franchise, lets hope 'X-Men 4' is their next step, and if it includes Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister, oh man, that could be Epic!

Well, if Apocalypse is but a cameo in the end of DOFP, leading to AOA in X4, then YES, that would be good. But, please, don't make ONE film, mixing both.

It would be great to finally see Apocalypse on the big screen battling the X-Men. He is their best and perhaps strongest villain that they have faced in the comics/animated show. So I'm all up for seeing the bigger villains battling the X-Men.

I do think like Thanos in The Avengers that Apocalypse will be the villain in the next film after X-Men: Days of Future Past. After all of the old characters coming back and focusing on that aspect of the story and having the Sentinels in this, I just

The quality of animation was better with X-Men Evolution but X-Men Evolution was cancelled just when it was getting good. (X-Men Evolution started as a kids friendly version of the X-Men but the X-Men Evolution version of Apocalypse was legitimately scary.)

Hope this is true. I would love to see Apocalypse brought to life. Magneto and he are 1 and 2 in The X-men rogue's gallery.

After Magneto, no villains have caused the X-men more misery than Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister. If they set-up a sequel with a brief cameo/emergence of Apocalypse at the end, I will be a happy nerd.

I agree with violentcop5. It's possibly a set up for the next X-Men movie like what The Avengers did. Even if this is a rumor, it's a great one.

My guess is its a set up for the sequel

Avengers set the precident for these type of movies, I think Fox is thinking of setting up a cameo for future sequels (maybe the Age of Apocalypse?) like they did with Thanos in the post credit sequence. Plus I wouldn't worry about the cast being overcrowded, all the characters have already been set-up in the other sequels, they can just show up and do their thing.

WTF

OK, so they're doing a mix of
DAYS OF FUTURE PAST
and
AGE OF APOCALYPSE ?
If so, you can count me out ! I've been supporting SInger so far, but THIS is the step too far...
I'll wait for a confirmation/denial but I'm officially scared, here !
Please Bryan, don't fuck this up !

slow it down there

This sounds an awful lot like casting for the Xmen 3 turd. After Bryan Singer's latest, I do not believe in him.

Really?

Even though this movie seems to be turning into one long string of cameos, I doubt Apocalypse will be in it. If he is, don't count on him being anything like he is/was in the comics. They have pretty much trashed any semblance of the history of these characters to reconstruct them into "screen friendly" presences.

Best villian in x-men, combine that with sentinels, then we have the workings....finally of a real x-men movie. Now they just need the actual x-men to be in it, instead of a few here and there.

If Peter Dinklage is playing himself, but also the main antagonist. Could he possibly be playing Apocalypse, but for most of the movie, be hiding in human form like in the cartoon?

Well so far we have seen Magneto (xmen and last stand), stryker (x2 and wolverine) and magneto/kevin bacon (first class) - wow i guess we can finally get an actual villain that is exciting. nah, throw stryker in for a third time. When i see him on screen fighting the xmen- then i will beleve it. remember galactus was in FF2.
