Bryan Singer says Wolverine won't cameo in the X-Men prequel First Class

11.02.2010

Marvel mutant Wolverine may have a healing factor that slows his aging, so he basically looked the same in the 1960s as he does now. But we still won't be seeing Hugh Jackman's boneclaws and muttonchops during that time period in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

A recent internet rumor (which apparently originated from a cab driver) claiming Jackman may make an appearance in the movie has been refuted by Bryan Singer, the original X-director who is currently producing Matthew Vaughn's prequel. As Singer succinctly told the Coventry Telegraph: "He's not in the movie, he's in the Wolverine movies."

(It should be noted, however, that the thought of including the character in the movie crossed Singer's mind at some point, since he did once mystifyingly mention wanting Taylor Lautner to play young Wolvie.)

Singer had a few other tidbits to offer about the early days of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr: "We've set First Class in a time when the X-Men were conceived in the early 60s, up against political events that were happening - the early civil rights movement - and we have these kinds of events at a time when the world didn't know mutants existed."

Additionally: "It takes place in the early 60s and it incorporates some characters I was able to bring back in time that are familiar, as well as some new characters, new mutants." (Specifically, Darwin, Banshee, Havok and a female Angel, plus young Beast and Mystique and whoever else they choose or create for the movie.)

"Also, there's a new villain component, a really cool villain and villain group.

It's a really cool and fun story. It will be the first Silver Age Marvel movie."

Extra Tidbit: I admit that I do like the idea of a "Silver Age" Marvel movie... just not sure how I feel about cramming it with characters and rushing the production to make a June 2011 release date. Maybe Singer didn't watch X-MEN 3, which faced similar issues.

If Wolverine made a cameo in this, I would be more excited for this movie. Again, I am a die hard X-Men fan and hope this movie does well, but I'm not holding my breath. And Singer thinks it's a bad idea to put Wolverine in this movie, but was okay for putting a younger Wolverine with Lautner playing him? Just plain dumb if you ask me. Would have been horrible, horrible casting.

x-"mad"men

There is no cyclops in this film. I want this to be good sooo badly, but...., oh yeah, there's no Cyclops in a silver age X-men film. If I get one response that defends that Wolverine origins thang it is all out war! Don't.

Too Bad

Too bad, Logan's platoon helping to rescue Magneto from the Nazis back at the end of WWII would've made a great cameo. From what I've read, I really like the direction of this film. Still, a cool cameo would always spice things up if done right. Maybe Singer is lying to keep it a secret?

They should scratch the events in X3 and just have dude Angel in First Class instead of a female version.

Good, when I heard about the Wolverine cameo I thought it reeked of desperation.

FINALLY an X-men NOT about Wolverine!

I'm glad Wolverine's not involved in this. Yeah, the dude's the very definition of bad-assery in the Marvel universe and I think he's cool, but he's been sucking the life out of all the X-men films ever since he first appeared on screen. Everyone sacrificed substance for ways on how to make Wolverine fight cool battles and perform amazing stunts. I say bravo for actually making this film about the X-men and not just an X-man.

I have no enthusiasm towards this movie in the slightest. It's going to be so rushed. And there are just too many characters.

I've hated the idea for this film since Fox first hired the guy who created THE O.C. to write it. Visions of a young Cyclops confronting Jean Grey by her locker crossed my mind: “You slept with Logan?! How could you do this to me?!” Then Matthew Vaughn came on-board and it gave me hope. But still, this whole thing just feels wrong. The way Fox is cheapening out by carrying on their X-MEN franchise without having to pay big name actors – it's very clever, but it’s not what any of us want. They

The way Fox is cheapening out by carrying on their X-MEN franchise without having to pay big name actors – it's very clever, but it’s not what any of us want. They way they're rushing it through production to make a competitive date next year (just like they did with X-MEN 3) is not the way to create a memorable film. Bryan Singer's comments about Taylor Lautner playing a young Wolverine – which have never been refuted – indicate a distinct lack of connection with the fanatic audience for these films. Of course, it's entirely possible Vaughn only agreed to direct because he had enough to work with to make a great film. Until I see it with my own eyes, I remain EXTREMELY skeptical. Yours faithfully, Hugh Jackman's Agent.

Bryan Singer soooo OVERRATED!!

Why would anyone hire a character-driver director/producer for movies that should be about action!? He got lucky with X-Men because it was the first of its' kind! It's that simple!! Ex: Superman Return -- character driver!!! Come on, we want action with these characters!!

"He's not in the movie, he's in the Wolverine movies."

Too bad Singer didn't come to this realization until after 3 Wolvie-centric X-Men movies..
