Bryan Singer teases his idea for an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover

There have been rumors that 20th Century Fox might mix one of it's profitable comic franchises (X-MEN) with another that could use the boost (FANTASTIC FOUR) and if the following is any indication, they've found the right man to pull it all together; Bryan Singer. Now directing his 4th X-Men film for Fox (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE), Singer confided that he’s been talking with the people behind the new FANTASTIC FOUR movie about a way to bring the two teams together.

Bryan Singer on an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover film:

Those ideas are in play. That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it. It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say. We’ll have to see how the [upcoming] films turn out. To just say you’re going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that.

I appreciate Singer's reluctance to dive into a crossover film head-first, as a strong FANTASTIC FOUR film should be introduced before we start going all AVENGERS with the comic heroes Fox has at their disposal. While I don't have any ill will towards Josh Trank's upcoming FOUR flick, the trailers don't paint a very unique superhero picture. The box-office performance of that film will undoubtedly weigh heavily on Singer's decision to go forward with his idea for a crossover.

FANTASTIC FOUR will open in theaters on August 7, 2015, while X-MEN: APOCALYPSE opens on May 27, 2016.

I like how he nicely put it, that if the F4 movie blows they aren't going to touch it.

So F4 would have to travel back in time, because the modern cast is gone.

F4 kids would travel to the 90s??

I just don't see how F4 meets X-Men would be any good. When X-Men already have people who turn invisible, can turn to metal, can control fire and ice, why would we need F4 mixed in?

"That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films"
so...these movies both having a large number of cast members is reason enough to smoosh them together? Some would say that was an excellent reason not to. I'm biased, in fairness, because I don't really like SInger's continued involvement in the X-Men franchise. Being constantly beholden to the films he's already done with their ageing and occasionally unsuitable cast is an exercise in vanity to apply continued relevance to

Being constantly beholden to the films he's already done with their ageing and occasionally unsuitable cast is an exercise in vanity to apply continued relevance to the earlier X-Men films as much as it is an attempt to create some coherent whole from films in a franchise that wasn't really planned that way. A new director who really gets the characters, and a cast given a chance to shine without the threat of previous versions of their role wanting to boost their careers would be really good right now. I'm all for a coherent cinematic universe when it's well planned, but neither the X-Men franchise nor (quite possibly) Fantastic Four really fit that description enough to warrant them making a movie baby together.

To little, to late

They had a chance to do it with DoFP, by introducing Rachel Grey and Francklin Richard. They chose NOT TO, so now I don't want it anymore, especially with the upcoming (so called) FF movie looking so bad. I don't want this near my X franchise.
Look, in France, FF is released on August 5th. The press screenings are on August 3rd... WITH A NDA UNTIL AUGUST 5TH ! What does it tells you ? Either way, the movie is BAAAAAD, or the studio think its already so hated that even if it's the next Citizen

Doubtful but possible), and so they rather have no promotion at all from the press...

Its official

I backed F4 for a while now, but I can't ignore the mediocre footage, coupled with the fact Josh Trank is clearly not happy with the finished product. Might be looking at Green Lantern numbers on this one.

Of course it's a terrible idea and would only be done as a stunt to try and match the Avengers and Justice League team ups but I really don't think there's anything to worry about. Fantastic Four will likely bomb (if the movie going public has any sense at all) and there will be no clamoring to see more of them. Plus there's really no precedent for such a team up. No major villains in common. No classic team up from the comics to draw from. No point.

No.

If Singer is thinking about making more movies with the First Class cast then more power to him. Meanwhile they need to get the Deadpool and Gambit movies made and follow up with X-Force and X-Men movies set in present day. Then what? Fox and Marvel are going to have a problem: Fox will have already used Magneto and Apocalypse and Marvel will have meanwhile already used Loki and Thanos. Fox owns the rights to Blastar, Annihilis, Kang, Galactus and the Skrulls. Unles they can make an FF

Unles they can make an FF movie with somebody other than Doctor Doom as the villain then the rights should go back to Marvel. In exchange, Marvel can agree to let Fox borrow its Avengers characters for an X-Men / Avengers movie and an Avengers / X-Men movie with the villains Mojo and Kang, respectively. That would be much better than an X-Men / Fantastic Four movie.

I really hope they don't crossover. And what could the four members of the Fantastic Four really bring to a world already filled with mutants who share similar superpowers as them!?!? So what I'm trying to say is that the Fantastic Four need this to happen much more than the X-Men franchise needs it to.

The Fantastic Four is awesome. Someone should really make a Fantastic Four movie someday. I wonder what that would be like.

The only villain that's worth them teaming up for would be Galactis, which would be quite a spectacle. But you would have to bring back the original cast for a team-up because X-men and FF aren't in the same time frame with each other (being pretty confident that the FF movie takes place in present day).

I actually don't want Marvel to reclaim all the rights to characters owned by other studios because they run the risk of being the same as almost all of the movies under Marvel Studios umbrella. X-Men has finally got its shit together and to disrupt that by prematurely introducing a crossover film with FF is a big mistake. Let Fox make at least one critically and financially successful FF movie then we can discuss a crossover five or more years from now.

That's a pretty strong argument. I think I might have to agree with you.

Yeah let's just not do that okay? Theres a good Brian Singer. Enjoyed DOFP and am looking forward to Apocalypse despite Apocalypse looking like a blue geriatric. But this? No no no.

How about...

They find a way for Marvel Studios to once again own the rights to the word "Mutants", the characters in X-Men, and the characters in Fantastic Four. Then, reboot the whole lot of em.

Why? Fox has been making good X-men movies lately and Marvel already has a clusterfuck of characters they're giving movies and tv shows to while having to juggle how they all interact with each in a shared universe. Adding the FF and x-men to that would be overwhelming even for Marvel, not to mention the viewers trying to keep up with such an extensive universe.

Aside from the fact that this version of FF is already hated, there just isn't a need to bring these groups together from a story telling standpoint. I'd only want to see them interact for the sake of introducing Franklin Richards to the X-Men and planting the seeds for an Onslaught movie, something the X franchise is nowhere near ready to deal with. And I'm ready for X-Men life after Singer, great movies but it's a new era and visual style of superhero films we're in right now.
