Bryan Singer tweets the first full image of a Sentinel from X-Men: Days of Future Past

Aug. 1, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Bearing the mark SNTL2 on it's leg, director Bryan Singer has unveiled our first full look at a Sentinel from the in production X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Up until now we have seen the photos of the scale model from Comic Con a few weeks ago alongside the fleeting glimpses of the robotic monstrosities in the viral Trask Industries video. But, now we can fully appreciate the size of the cinematic creations that will pose a major threat for the mutant superheroes.

Designed by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), the Sentinels have been an ongoing threat since their introduction in the comics. A key adversary in the Days of Future Past comic, the big screen version appears a lot more like an evil creation from Apple rather than the humanoid version on the written page. While I am sure these are the initial version and we will get to see a much larger version once the future sequences kick in during the film, it is still amazing to see them finally coming to light.

Bryan Singer tweeted the image below showing him standing next to a Sentinel in prime condition. Hopefully we get to see more in action when the trailer finally hits. For now, we can see that the robot can be unassuming enough to act as the sentry it is marketed as to the public, but under that featureless face lies a powerful A.I. with the intent to destroy all mutants.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST starring Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender,, Ian McKellen, Nicholas Hoult, Omar Sy, Peter Dinklage, Halle Berry, Adan Canto, Fan Bingbing, Anna Paquin, Evan Peters, Daniel Cudmore, Ellen Page and Booboo Stewart opens on May 23, 2014.

Sorry to say, but I'm a little underwhelmed. The Sentinels from the comics looked huge and brutish and solid. This looks like flimsy plastic. And that huge vent is ridiculous! At least it's got some purple.

Awesome!

They look great! Bryan Singer must be happy as Hell to finally get the Sentinels into an X-Men movie. And so am I.

Nice! I was kind of expecting them to tone down the size, it's cool to see they didn't. Even cooler that they actually built a practical effect for it. So far everything about this film is looking good. I can't wait!

I think it looks great. I'm also excited that he's not standing next to a CGI sentinel. Looks like they will be going for a proper blend of CGI and practical effects. I'm getting more and more stoked for this movie!

VTOL

Like F-135 and Harrier, the chest is for flight not jet boots. I like the update. Big enough to pick up a mutant, gatling to mow down group. Short enough to get attacked at the knee.

If I was a mutant, I wouldn't be scared.
I'm a big fan of Sentinels but I just don't find this the least bit exciting, its not menacing enough. Never mind swiping some adamantium claws or blasting it with lightning or other powers, just walk up to it and pull out one of those exposed rubber tubes.
I know they like to go for realism these days, but come on, have some balls with the design (i.e sod realism and go more comic book look). Still hoping this is a early version of sentinel and will

Love it. And judging from the logo on it's leg this is likely only the 'Mach 2' edition, to borrow some Iron Man terminology. Since in the film's continuity they started making these bad boys in 1973, they'll probably be humongous by 2014. Not that this one is small.

One of the best parts of the old X-Men cartoons was that Wolverine was allowed too go nuts on these guys because there was no blood and all that. I can't wait to see that in live action. I think we're in for a few fastball specials

It's a shame we won't get two Wolverines fighting alongside each other due to the change from physical time travel to transporting his mind into his younger body. A double fastball special with him x2 and Collosus and Beast would've been utterly epic.

This is cool but...

It's only the early ones that the FC X-Men will see realised. The one we see on the Trask Industries website at one of Reagan's inauguration. The ones the original movie team will see are hopefully going to end up much larger. Kaiju big.

I'll Give Singer Another Shot...

Just the fact that Vaughn isn't directing is a bummer, because First Class was by far the most true to form X-Men movies, like the black leather was an insult, and that was Singer, even though the opening of X2 was awesome, comic characters are defined by their costumes just as much as their powers, and I just can't get over that singer initiated the black leather, while Vaughn actually brought the yellow and blue into play.

I would take this image for what it is

Pure production shots. We don't even know if that's literally how big they'll appear, or if they are going to be enhanced. There's a lot of cheap-looking plastic - obviously that's place holder for CGI. They are a good "real-world" translation. The proof will be in the putting, but there's nothing about this prop that is cause for concern. The fact that he's showing it means there's more to what is going into the finished product than what we are seeing here.

As early prototypes, these have potential. As a final Sentinel that goes after mutants, it's pathetic. One thing I keep wondering about is how Sentinels play a roll after X3 had a very brief intro to them...aka glowing eyes and the head from the Danger Room.
I'll still give the movie a chance but so far this looks more like a sentry than a sentinel.

Hurm....

I have never once gotten on this site to bitch about an image. I've complained about ideas and concepts (there should be some more films before a batman/superman film), but I've never said these costumes look bad, they've ruined the way the character looks, etc. bc I usually just wait for the movie. But I am very excited to see this movie. For me, it is one of the most highly-anticipated movies ever...and that shot of a sentinel looks absolutely terrible. I have no idea what a hundred of those

I have no idea what a hundred of those guys could do to the x-men. I hope that's an earlier model and they progress in the film, or that digital effects help the fuck out of it. That shit is weak. That literally wouldn't be cool if it was a real robot.

Looks cool for early model

If this is what they have for a 1970s Sentinel, I'm fine with it. I like that they captured the glowing eyes. I'm not going to judge too much because it is a set still and not lighted to be in a scene of the movie. And let's be honest, there's no way Singer is going to release a full look of a bad ass future sentinel to the masses. He'll let the film reveal that.

Practical Effects

I like that they aren't relying too much on CGI here, it'll give some realism to the project. Also, we've only seen sentinels 1 & 2, and in the film they go up to 5 or something right? I know they looked cheesy as hell, but I want to see some flesh-toned faces on these robots
