Burton calls the Dark Shadows series "awful" and we get two new pics

03.23.2012

For those who have actually seen the original DARK SHADOWS soap opera, you realize it has it's place in time. You watch it now and it's corny as shit. While Johnny Depp may have loved it as a kid, Burton realizes that it wasn't really that great. “I think,” Burton said evenly, “you could say it was actually awful.”

So why even pursue it? “It’s a different animal. If I go back and watch something like ‘Star Trek,’ it’s not that hard to analyze what the appeal was, and even if the show is dated you identify what it was that made it work. The ‘Dark Shadows’ appeal was a little more abstract. What I loved about it was the fact that it was a melodramatic soap opera, and, well, that flies in the face of any modern studio’s interests as far as moviemaking. But what we’ve gone for is a mixture, and that’s always what I’ve been interested in; I think most of my movies are mixtures of light and dark and serious things and things that have humor in them.”

Depp spoke of his admiration for the show when he was younger, “It was a real thing for me, I had to watch it, and it was tough because you’d miss the beginning — it started at like 3 p.m., but that’s when we got out of school. And then it moved later because all the kids wrote in letters. When you met someone who knew the show and loved it, there was an instant connection.”

Oh and I've got two new photos for you. Check them out below. If you want to read the entire interview between Depp and Burton, head on over here.

Shame on you!

Shame on you for taking one line out of a different Tim Burton article and deliberately posting it out of context just to get hits. Shame on you! How old are you that you think it's okay to play journalist like a sleazy tabloid writer?

Okay, let's take a look at the REAL article from Hero Complex.

Yeah, you conveniently left out he said it was awful in regard to production values like the flies landing on faces. And you deliberately ignored the fact that he LOVED the show. Again, shame on you for lying to your readers.

it's the media man, this is how it works. Lame, I know - but it is what it is and it is that way because it works (gets hits).

Given the trailer, I doubt he "loved the show". The trailer shows he had no respect for the source material.

Niki has always been the weakest link at JB. Her spellchecking has improved, and her grammar has also gotten a bit better, I'll give her that.

Dear God! All of that talk about quoting out of context and you can't find anything other than what was already in the post? Did you even read the post?

And nothing of what you added changed anything: he called the show awful and if the reporter hadn't asked why he was doing a remake, he wouldn't have given that "context".

I get his point, but...

...he's a very inarticulate guy, and could be accused of being rather egotistical - not just based on his comments here, but on various stuff he's said over the years. I'm a fan of some of his work (Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Batman and Returns, etc.) but ever since Depp struck gold with Disney via Pirates, it seems like he helped usher Burton in with the double-deal packages too. Both of them have lost a great deal of their early appeal in the last few years as a result. You look at Alice in

You look at Alice in Wonderland and wonder how a film so perfectly suited for the Burton of the '80s and '90s could so drastically misfire.

I'm looking forward to Dark Shadows because it looks to be a return to Beetlejuice-esque mixture of comedy and gothic horror. But after the rather disastrous online response to the teaser trailer (especially from fans of the original show, which I admittedly never watched), he should have chosen much better words here than to refer to the source material as "awful."

Burton has lost his edge, and instead of finding it in material, just does mediocre films. Seems like he went mainstream after Big Fish. and Johnny? Well, he isn't above being in the new 21 Jump Street abomination.

in that same regard:

the early Dr. Who episodes were terrible and had crappy production values and yet it has lasting appeal and has even been remake better... not like Tim Burton Knows how to make an ancient property excellent, just look at his Planet of the Apes.

This has become standard procedure for productions of remakes that get a poor reception.

The first step is to either satirize the original source material, or to alter it to the point that only the names remain. Clearly this has already been done.

They're onto the second phase right now, where they explain how horrible the source material was, in order to rationalize the satirization and/or alteration into something unrecognizable.

They're onto the second phase right now, where they explain how horrible the source material was, in order to rationalize the satirization and/or alteration into something unrecognizable.

The next phase, usually after poor viewership or box office returns, will have the production staff explaining how stupid the fan base is for not recognizing how brilliant their remake is.

They'll go on to explain that the Dark Shadows fans expected everything to be exactly the way it was in 1968, and that it was impossible to do that.

Childhood trashed again

Burton ruined Apes and Charlie Willy Wonka was horrible. Is he competing with Bay (alien turtles?0 on ruining our childhood. Man oh man I'm saving money down the road.

Just like he 'improved' Planet of the Apes, and Alice in Wonderland.

No thanks. I'll pass. Might catch it on network tv if I'm bored enough, or if I'm laid up in the hospital with every bone in my body broken and I can't reach the remote.

Well, your attempts at comedy and films with Johnny of late are awful.seriously, pretty lame to trash the source material.

Yeah. Dark Shadows sucked. It was boring, slow, and never built up to anything. Sure it can be improved, but that doesn't mean the improvement will be any good either..

This trailer shows Burton had no interest in improving it, just trashing it.

I like Burton and Depp

and I'm not jumping on him and hating him because of his comment here... but Dark Shadows looks pretty awful. Not Mirror Mirror bad but pretty uninteresting and unentertaining(?) I gotta say...

These two, have too good of a track record, for me to ignore their efforts. If for nothing, their collaborations are usually off beat and IMO interesting. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a Burton Pirates movie.
