Bye Justin Lin! Hello three potential directors for Fast & Furious 7!

Apr. 8, 2013by:

For those who haven't heard, Justin Lin is officially off FAST & FURIOUS 7. On Wednesday evening, the director let the studio know that he was not going to be able to helm the seventh installment of the series. The reason? Universal is in a hurry to get on the next edition to the franchise, so much so that it would cut into Lin's post-production work on FAST SIX. The director does not want to rush both projects just to get out another product. Even for an action packed popcorn flick like any in the series, you gotta give the guy some props for not wanting to just put a movie out for the sake of doing so.

With him gone, Latino Review already found three potential directors to take Lin's place: Jeff Wadlow (KICK-ASS 2), Brad Furman (THE LINCOLN LAWYER), and Harald Zwart (KARATE KID 2010).

Latino Review is putting their money on Wadlow since he's just directed a flick for the same studio. KICK-ASS 2 does look like it's going to be a good one, so perhaps he is a good choice, but without having seen the movie yet I can't definitely give a straight answer. Then there's Furman, who did great with THE LINCOLN LAWYER, and we have yet to see RUNNER RUNNER starring Ben Affleck so the verdict is still out of the action portion of things. Then there's Zwart...

I guess we'll find out some time this week or next since that's when a decision is due to come in.

Damn thats a really lackluster list, Universal sold out on their own franchise. I don't see the point of rushing the next one into production. I mean damn why not just bring back Rob Cohen?

Universal is hurting for more franchise hits. They made a Bourne knock-off last year which was just ok, Snow White & the Huntsman is known more for the affair than the actual movie. I'm worried about rushing this like they seem to be rushing Jurassic Park IV.

Itīs understandable that the studio try to rush this one, there are quite some stars who need to be available (Diesel, Carano, Walker, Rodriguez, Statham and the Rock) for the next part. If 6 and 7 would have been shot back to back as planned there would have been no problem managing all these different schedules.

Why would Universal want to rush making Fast 7? Lin knows how to do it so why rush him? Greed, I guess. Bad move, Universal.

Does Universal have any other blockbuster releases? Rushing another installment of a tent pole franchise suggests that they have nothing else to make them money next year so they are forcing a quick Fast & Furious release. Maybe they wouldn't have this problem if they could develop more successful films.

We waited two years between Fast Five and this new one so why not give him the extra year he needs? I have a feeling there's more to the story than what's being told. It seemed fairly certain that he was going to continue directing these films so this is kind of a bummer.

I think it's dumb the studio is risking the last film in the franchise by giving the reins to a different director. They could easily wait another year or so to give Lin (the guy who resurrected this franchise) enough time to prep and send this series off on a high note.

This is such strange circumstances. Why not give the guy who rebuilt your entire franchise back to a marketable level the amount of time he needs to make both movies? (unless the real reason is different)
