Just as Gerard Butler was announced for the role of Jimmy Malone in Brian DePalma’s UNTOUCHABLES prequel entitled CAPONE RISING, Nicolas Cage has apparently dropped out of the title role. Variety reports the reason to be ‘scheduling conflicts’ and that Cage was only in ‘negotiations’ to play a young Al Capone. Is it just me, or wasn’t he already confirmed for this part? Either way, I think this actually bodes well for the film’s future. This is supposed to be a young Al Capone, and Cage can’t be much younger than Robert DeNiro was when he played Capone in the original UNTOUCHABLES. Just because Nicolas Cage is thin and in good shape, it doesn’t make him young. Let’s hope DePalma goes ahead and finds a more than suitable replacement for Cage, while he’s off shooting NEXT 2: PREMONITIONS, or something.
