Caine on Batman, Depp

09.22.2009

First Johnny Depp is thinking about bailing on Jack Sparrow in the completely necessary PIRATES sequel, and now he's possibly out of the BATMAN movie that he was never actually a part of in the first place? What's going on here?

This latest bit of info comes from Michael Caine talking to MTV News about the current non-status of BATMAN 3. He may not know much, but he’s pretty sure that Depp won’t be in it. Well, probably not. Maybe not.

"There is nobody, there's no script, there's nothing…It can't possibly be made before 2011 because 'Inception' is such a big picture."

"[They] won't tell me anything because I said this before," laughed Caine of the no-tell policy surrounding him after last year's Depp/Hoffman story. Nevertheless, Caine offered this bit of "news"—before admitting that it could be wrong, and he'd be in trouble all over again.

"Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman," he smiled. "They tell me in no uncertain terms."

I’m purposefully doing a disservice to the Depp/Riddler movement by posting this story, because the more we talk about it, the less likely it is to happen. And to me, that’s a good thing. I want Nolan to go in completely some random-ass Ledger-esque direction with the next film (when it finally does happen). and as much as Depp has proven he can dance around like a nutcase with a weird haircut (that's a Willy Wonka not a Sweeney Todd reference), I think we should broaden our scope past the obvious A-listers that come to mind for these kinds of roles.

Extra Tidbit: Hey, I didnít hear him say that Miley Cyrus ISNíT Batgirl.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

Easily the smartest piece of commentary of read on JoBlo all day:

IGNORE THE A-LIST

I agree. I adore Depp's roles but he's just too big for this movie. Yeah TDK is now a major, major movie to aim for but I don't want everything else to be overshadowed by Johnny Depp's name. I'm sure a lot of other people can portray The Riddler as precise as Ledger did The Joker. I'd love to see a Riddler / some Bane / crime thiller / mystery story arch. Like a cat and mouse chase...will really portray the detective side of the Dark Knight. Riddler's mind games plus a physical challenge in

hmm maybe Robin williams as the riddler. i could see him going from cunning and collected then switch to gleeful and energetic, while still being a menace. And, dont they have to make robin appear before they even think of batgirl? ( please god, no miley cyrus, give an unknown actor a chance, there seem to be alot of good ones appearing of late)

Bats needs a real challenge...

I just finished reading the Knightfall Arc again, and wow. Something like this really needs to be done. If Nolan is as good as I know he is, he would def be able to pull off Bane in a realistic non-insulting to the fans kinda way. Bats needs a challenge that really can break him physically and mentally at this point. Otherwise its just, "yay, Bats beats another skinny guy in a funny suit again....Yay batmaaaan."

Never liked the idea of him in the EVENTUAL film, too on the nose. I love the guy in just about everything he's done but playing the role of the Riddler, if he's even in the THEORETICAL movie, would just be a re-hash and a cop-out. If the character does somehow wind up in the film, I say go with someone like Sharlto Copley or Mark Strong. I'd love to see Catwoman too, they could use a strong female lead, a character that walks both sides of the fence.

everyone fits

everyone fits in Nolan's world...even mr.Freeze.

they would simply get a "reimagining".

, and please Bane HAS to be at least muscular.....not a tool, but big at least!

I second the using of Black Mask, but if we have to have a riddler, I suggest Crispin Glover.

I don't get why everyone wants Johnny Depp to play everything. I love the guy but there is such a thing as too much Depp. I'm sure when a third is announced and the villains are announced that many people will bitch and some will be happy. Nolan knows what he is doing and he made 2 great Batman flicks without taking advice from people online saying who he needs to include and who needs to play them.

Using Bane in no rational way means that he'd be "fantasy driven character", Housecoat. Joker had permawhite in the comics, Nolan scratched that. Ra's al Ghul has the lazarus pit that brings him back to life, Nolan didn't use it. Adapting Bane to Nolan's universe means he wouldn't be a juiced up guy the size of a skyscraper, but rather more the essence of his character, who figured out who Batman is and wanted to beat him mentally and physically. Someone like Javier Bardem could play a version

I can't think of a major Batman villain that is less of a fit (as a lead villain) than Riddler in Nolan's universe. As a character working in the background, manipulating things, he could work beautifully. As a lead rouge for a film, not so much. How he was used in Hush was perfect and that relegated him to two (I think) pages, even though he had a hand in everything. With a guy like Depp, they'd have to overexpose a character which always has trouble when overexposed...

Touche...I see your point on the Bane character adaptation I suppose it could work if Nolan took what would translate and discarded what wouldn't.

Personally, I thought the riddler's representation in the Hush storyline was very weak. I never ever pictured the character so goofy. He was like a teenage numb nut compared to Batman. I don't think Loeb really knows how to do him justice and those last two pages were the weakest part of Hush for me. Just my two cents. Overall Hush rocks tho!

Totally agree with going with an unconventional choice for any future Batman role. Part of what made Ledger's Joker so awesome for me was that I had no idea how it was going to turn out. But I'll never forget seeing the very first teaser trailer with his one "Starting tonight..." line. It made the next year a lot more exciting waiting to see the film.

Riddler Yes Bane No

I can't think of another Batman villain that is more tailor made for Nolan's style than the Riddler. Nolan's films have a very cerebral theme of obsession permeating through all of them and the Riddler character fits so perfectly into that dynamic I'm surprised he didn't lean towards him over the joker. He always creeped me out the most out of Batman's villains because (when written properly) he was very smart, sadistic and cruel. Do the Riddler but don't get Depp. Love the guy as much as

And on this Bane business, please for the love of all that is good in this world please drop that. There is no way on God's green earth that Christopher Nolan would go with such a fantasy driven character as Bane considering he's already said the Penguin was pushing it for him. Please...just...drop it!

I say just put something together with Black Mask, Talia and Catwoman. The first two are untapped in movies and Nolan could work them in nicely. Talia could tie the third film into Begins, coming to Gotham thinking Batman has "learned to do what is necessary" with reports of him murdering people at the end of TDK.

I'd also really dig Hush, but I don't know that he'd translate as well to the big screen without the massive gallery of rouges they put into the Hush comics. Cobblepot as a mob

Cobblepot as a mob boss or Nolan's idea of Bane would also be cool to fill up the movie. Kind of like Batman Overwhelmed, before he has to take control of the LOS to clean up the city...

Actually Penguin, Riddler, and Bane could all work as Nolan villains. Burton did that weird, fucked-up Penguin that spewed black goo and lived in the sewers... he's nothing like the Penguin of the comics. IAmJack600 is right when he says Riddler could come off too similar as The Joker, but there are other directions they could take his character where it would work. As for Bane, he's just a guy who was raised in prison, is super-intelligent, and has some massive steroids cruising through his

Nolan could work with that and make it realistic enough so audiences wouldn't scoff at the concept. Hush could be awesome in B3. I know he's a very recent addition to the rouge's gallery, but his story is great and would fit right in with Nolan's tone.

Riddler, Penguin, Mr.Freeze, Poison Ivy, Robin, and Bane do not fit in Nolan's Batman World. Black Mask is the only Bad-Guy character real enough and dark enough.

No Riddler Anyway ...

Personally, I think it would be stupid to go with the Riddler anyway. In this world, he'd come off as too similar to the Joker. I say they bring Bane in. It's time to break the bat.
