Cameron's next?

Dec. 19, 2008by:

FORBIDDEN PLANET A remake of the science fiction classic FORBIDDEN PLANET has been floating around for a while now and in its current incarnation, Warner Bros. has tasked scribe J. Michael Straczynski with giving a modern edge to the story of a starship sent to investigate the reason behind the sudden silence of a distant planet colonized by genius scientists. Now the folks over at the IESB have learned that James Cameron has expressed interest in making the film one of his future projects. Of course, he was attached to direct the flick way back when he was doing TITANIC but that fizzled, TITANIC went on to become the highest grossing film of all time and he decided to spend the next ten years in a fancy pants submersible. But now that WB is in active development on PLANET, he's apparently decided he wants in on that bad boy once again, especially with all the high tech CG wizardry he's developed and using in the science fiction epic AVATAR. Who knows if he'll do this after AVATAR, though, as he's also attached to direct BATTLE ANGEL and THE DIVE.

Extra Tidbit: The IESB also has details on the remake's plot.

The movie is not going to be a remake, so the posters before me dont need to worry. It is actually going to be a prequel of sorts. The original movie was about a ship sent to investigate the disappearance of a previous ship. This new movie will be a prequel basically, and will be about what happened to that first ship, that the original movie investigates the disappearance of, so it will happen before the original movie.

I'm a big fan of the original, and its totally mental (in a good way) soundtrack. I'm not sure about a remake, no matter who directs it. You could take the basic plot and change the visuals and sound and the film would be unrecognisable and not really Forbidden Planet anymore. Then again, as the basic plot is essentially Shakespear's The Tempest set in space, the plot's been reused countless times already.
The original is fantastic though, a real classic of the sci-fi genre.

I am Jazzed

Though, I really hope we don't have to wait like 40 years for this to even start pre-production...

I'd rather want him to get started on Battle Angel once Avatar wraps up.
