Candy Land movie still happening, will be like LOTR for kids

May. 24, 2011by:

Because you demanded it, I bring to you your regular update on the CANDY LAND movie. Yes, it's still happening. No, I'm not sure why. And yes, it does seem to defy all logic and common sense. Now, let's see what else is new...

As it turns out the writers of KUNG FU PANDA 2, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, are also the writers tasked with writing an actual movie based on the board game for kids who haven't yet learned how to read. And as it turns out, they've got some decidedly ambitious ideas for the film. Namely, LORD OF THE RINGS. Please, explain.

"We envision it as LORD OF THE RINGS, but set in a world of candy," Berger says. Uh-huh. I'm not even sure what that really means (LORD OF THE RING POPS?) but Berger goes on to explain, "It has characters from [the board game] and takes the idea of people finding themselves in a world that happens to be made entirely of candy where there are huge battles going on."

So in case you were worrying about CANDY LAND staying faithful to "Candy Land," PHEW!, you can totally relax because Gramma Nutt will totally make an appearance.

Now keep in mind that just because CANDY LAND's script is in active development, doesn't mean it's a shoe-in for a greenlight. I'd suspect that Universal will wait to see how BATTLESHIP, their mega-budgeted first attempt at a board game adaptation, will fare before giving the OK to this film. At least I hope so.

After the Candy Land movie comes out, I think Universal owes us a movie adaptation of the game Sorry.

Make it about kids who get hooked on Fun Dip, suck Candy Canes for Monopoly money, and go Nerd Rope A-to-A with Jennifer Connely... and I'm THERE!

I dunno

It really doesn't sound all that bad to me. I mean, I don't think I'll enjoy it personally, but not everything can work on both levels (for kids and adults.)

I tried to get my younger siblings (ages 6 - 10) to watch LOTRs with me, but they just can't stay attached to something like that, battle scenes aside. Why not craft something for them that can be a sort of stepping stone?

Ahh...the 1990's...

Just hearing the name "Candyland" takes me back to the days of watching Ren & Stimpy & Pirates Of Dark Water all while sugar-buzzed on Ecto-Cooler.

Not to sure about a MOVIE, though. I agree w/ [link] CL to Guillermo Del Toro. He'll pimp it up & freak it out somehow.

I don't know any Kids that Dumb

Besides if we're going with board games, I'd much rather see a sequel not reboot to Clue, with the occassional cameo from characters of the first movie. Who wants a Candy Land movie?

After Madeleine Kahn died, I doubt that'll ever happen. Sigh.

hmmm

For some reason the only way i could see this being any good was if ppl like Trey Parker and Matt Stone did it. They seem like they could find some sort of balance to actually make something that didn't suck out of all of this.

I talked with a woman from Hasbro a couple months ago and she told me how they were trying to go back and retroactively build stories on their old board games and products so they could be made into franchises.

She said one of there main focuses at the moment was to take the characters from Candy Land and figure out who they were, what their story is, and how it could work into an over-arching plot. She seemed super excited about, so I don't think there's a lack of passion behind this.

This makes sense, when I think on it. I mean, the original game creator probably had some basic idea of who the characters were...not terribly fleshed out, but they weren't just random names on the board. I wonder if the original creation notes exist anywhere to inform on this.

Hmm Well this could be interesting. A gummy sticky road with a hershy highway with peanut logs. Yeah I will skip this one.

The ONLY way this works is if they give it to Guillermo Del Torro and he gives it some of his awesome juice. What a twist!

I'm surprised Candy Land hasn't at least had an animated DTV movie yet (has it?). I don't personally care, but as I recall Candy Land does have a bit of a story, which is more than can be said for Battleship.
