Capone Rising stalled?

8 years agoby:

Untouchables Those of you eagerly anticipating the release of CAPONE RISING, the prequel to the exceptional crime thriller THE UNTOUCHABLES, if only to see if Brian De Palma could work his crime thriller magic once again, may have a long wait ahead of you as he recently told popular film podcast "Movie Geeks United" that he's run into some trouble. Says the iconic director: "We are still trying to cast this. Weíve had this together with a bunch of different actors over the last couple of years and things keep on falling in and out. I donít know if itís going to pull itself together soon enough for me to shoot next year, because I have to shoot it in the wintertime because thereís a Valentineís Day massacre thatís gotta be done in the cold in February. If we donít get it together in the next month or so, Iím going to go off and do something else." Well, ain't that just a kick in the nads? Or maybe a sigh of relief for some?

Extra Tidbit: The film was written by OCEAN'S THIRTEEN and ROUNDERS writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say what makes the most sense. Seeing as Bobby DeNiro ain't getting any younger, and this is all pre-Eliot Ness, how about they just drop the whole tie-in to "The Untouchables" and go with a regular biopic, or at least a "Capote"-esque biopic focusing on a particular time in the gangster's life? Or maybe an ensemble movie focusing on everyone around him, and just drop the "Untouchables" angle, because really, that movie is exactly like its title. After all, it's been

After all, it's been twenty years, and while De Palma is in dire need of a hit, I really doubt this sounds like it's it.

What De Palma needs (and he's joining a growing list of iconic directors) is to forget for a moment he's Brian fucking De Palma and just make a movie for the sake of it, not trying to be Coppola or Hitchcock or anybody else, because the movies where he was just being himself (Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables, Carlito's Way) are by far his best.
