On Halloween I saw three grown men in Captain America costumes compared to only one in a Spiderman outfit and none dressed as that Dark Knight fellow. Clearly there's a buzz.

The Captain America movie, currently titled FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, has been floating around Hollywood for some time now, with casting and directing rumours lighting the blogs on fire for what seems like forever. Well the first bit of solid news on this film has finally arrived. Joe Johnston, he of JURASSIC PARK III, HIDALGO and the upcoming THE WOLFMAN fame, has signed on to direct the Marvel superhero's big screen debut.

Marvel better get this one right because with THOR on the way as well, the comic book giant is running out of marquee characters to bring to the big screen. For those that don't know, Captain America is the alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that gives him superhuman abilities. This movie will be set during WWII, but his scheduled appearance in the Avengers film that will follow soon after, will see Captain America fight crime alongside Robert Downey Jr. and others in modern day America. Joe Johnston has his work cut out for him and it should be interesting to see how this much-talked about production unfolds...

And the trend continues...
Since The Dark Knight was released they've hired directors for three superhero films (this being the latest) and they've all been oscar nominees or winners. Joe Johnston's not who I would've picked, but I'm going to trust Marvel on this one since JP3 aside he's got a pretty good track record, and hey, they're choices have all turned out pretty awesome so far.



I'm still going with...

While the story of SR was rather boring and not as action packed as most fans wanted (I personally didn't have a problem with it) Brandon Routh, the unknown that was cast as Superman, did a fine job. I've seen plenty of comments on here that agree, while they didn't care for the movie, Routh was a great Superman. I agree an unknown would be beneficial to the Captain America...

I'm pretty sure whoever they pick will be a good choice after RDJ's casting as Iron-Man and Ed Norton as Hulk, they seem to know what they are doing.



The Red Skull would be a pretty cool Villain for The Capt. and setting the film in WWII would also be awsome to see, I can't wait for further development.

Jurassic Park III was a sleeping pill and far from the same impact that it's predecessors accomplished, but The Wolfman seems promising enough. Let's hope Joe can do Captain America justice.

For the most part I enjoy Johnston's films. Although his background is in more family style films, so was Favreau before iron man (elf & zathura).

leo or gosling?
Valley may not have the resume to pull it off, but there has to be a balance somewhere. Leo or Gosling might be able to play the sickly, whining, unathletic, pre-serum captain, but good acting or not, there needs to be some physicality to the role or we'll end up with another Topher Grace - Venom style let down.

I appreciate all the 'suggestions' below, but the caliber of the actor has to match the size of the franchise. Mark Valley is a great idea, but he's not big enough. We need to be thinking on a Leo or Gosling level. I'd love to see Brad Pitt in the role.

Johnston did direct the underwhelming JP3, but he did do Rocketeer and that's a good thing to have in your corner when taking on Cap. A little tougher and sharper than Rocketeer but with the same patriotism and this might be solid.

I like the Brad Pitt idea. You need a bigger star than Downey and Norton for what presumably will be the lead role in the Avengers movie. I also like the Matt Damon suggestion...mostly because I'm working a totally unrelated 3D model of him...hehe).



Speaking of October Sky, how about Jake Gyllenhaal for Captain America? From the set pics from Prince of Persia we can see that...

All I gotta say is it's a damn shame this guy hasn't been cast as a superhero yet. I honestly think this would be inspired casting just like when RDJ was chosen for Ironman. I just wish Spielberg was the director. Although I am pleased with who they got.

Captain America def. needs to be an A-list actor. Isn't he the leader of the Avengers? He's gotta be able to not only hold his own, but lead RDJ, Don Cheadle, and Edward Norton in the Avengers movie.



I actually liked the Leo Dicaprio idea for Cap'n. He's getting more and more badass with each movie.

After "The Rocketeer" I don't think there's a better director for the job. Granted that was almost twenty years ago, but really, the only other director I can think of is Spielberg, and that's just not gonna happen.

I don't trust Joe Johnston. JP3 was not necessary, but in all fairness Hildago & the classic Gremlins are excellent films. However, Joe does not have as steady a track record as I feel would be required to bring in an icon like Cap. First Avenger is a great title, but I feel they should drop the CA subtitle.

I think he'll do a fine job. The best I can say is that I have no complaints about him, and that Jumanji is awesome.

Has anyone mentioned that he also directed a pretty damn good movie called October Sky?? This news excites me and I cannot wait to see who's the Captain...Does anyone know who'll be/has been writing the script??

He is perfect for this movie for the simple fact that he is cheap and one of those middle-class Hollywood directors that's been floating around for a while. He has made some hits and some misses but a lot of his movies are generally described as pretty good.



I have no problem with the guy.. and I think he can make a fun and entertaining Captain America. Something that's not...

I have no problem with the guy.. and I think he can make a fun and entertaining Captain America. Something that's not all that but a good time at the movies.. very similiar to what Iron Man was. Not a great movie, but a solid entertaining flick. The only problem is that without Downey Iron Man would have been OK at best.



They need a STUD to be Captain America. Not an A lister.. but someone who can carry that movie on his back.

Hey, that's good! Joe Johnston knows how to make a good, fun, entertaining flick. I LOVE 'Hidalgo,' 'Jurassic Park III,' and 'The Rocketeer,' and I'm waiting to have my high expectations delivered with 'The Wolf-Man.' Him? Directing 'First Avenger: Captain America'? I'm game.

As long as he gets a good script, this is a good choice of director for what should be a zesty, colorful film. Johnston has proven he can direct, with such great films as The Rocketeer, but also has some real piles of crap on his list like Hidalgo and JPIII. But they weren't poorly directed, there was just nowhere to go with such bad screenplays. So hopefully they get someone good to write...
As long as he gets a good script, this is a good choice of director for what should be a zesty, colorful film. I haven't Seen the Rocketeer, which is supposed to be good, but then again this guy is doing the Wolfman, and anyone remember Honey I Shrunk the Kids!! Well, one things for sure, the vast amount of different types of movies he has done, helps him to qualify as the director for this movie. Hopefully he can Deliver. Fingers Crossed!!

I like this pick. The Rocketeer and October Sky were great movies and judging by the trailer, I bet The Wolfman will be great too.
