Captain America 3 set to hit theaters May 6, 2016 against Batman vs Superman

Mar. 13, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Well, so much for 2015 being the biggest year for movies. With the announcement that BATMAN VS SUPERMAN was moving to the following summer so as to not go against the behemoth that will be THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Warner Bros knowingly put their big team-up directly against an untitled Marvel film slated for May 6, 2016. Earlier, rumors had the DC blockbuster wavering and releasing the week prior to the May date. Now there are rumblings that it may be because of what that Marvel movie will be.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel's untitled film will actually be CAPTAIN AMERICA 3. While this is unconfirmed, we already know that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are at work developing the story for the third film in the franchise and that both Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan are under contract for the film. With early buzz through the roof for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, it makes sense to try and strike while the iron is hot.

If both Disney and Warner Bros decide they are sticking with May 6th, that could become the most contentious box office opening weekend of all time. While there have been major studio films opening on the same weekend in the past, to have these two premiere against each other could be a potential disaster for either film or box office gold for both. The question then becomes: do you go see CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 or BATMAN VS SUPERMAN? Or, do you make it the best double feature of all time?

CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 and BATMAN VS SUPERMAN may both open on May 6, 2016.

I'd like to add one more thing. This is just an example of how greedy both studios are. No one owns exclusive rights to a release date; this goes for WB with the second or third week of July being dominated in the past by Batman and Harry Potter, and also Marvel dominating the first week in May with Iron Man and The Avengers. This is the type of shit that jades movie fans. You can bet that the creative forces behind each film have nothing to do with these decisions.

Batman vs Superman is going to follow in the footsteps of films like Man of Steel & Twilight. It will open massively huge followed by a drastic decline in the second weekend. If Captain America 3 opens during this second weekend, it will do very well (provided that Winter Soldier turns out good, if WS sucks then Captain 3 isn't going to do good period).

I have a feeling that Captain America 3 will change its release date, BUT it these two films did come out on the same day I'm pretty sure Batman vs. Superman would win the box office. Come on, it's BATMAN AND SUPERMAN in the same movie!

The batman/superman combo is too much for cap. Its sad because ironman and and captain america were my favourite phase 1 films. Hope DC move bvs up a week.

Just did an impromptu survey at work since all my co-workers are NOT fanboys and just general public movie going types. Said "Captain America 3 and Batman vs Superman open on the same day, which one will you see?' It was unanimous. Batman vs Superman. I asked why and they all said "It's Batman & Superman! I've seen Captain America already. That can wait."

I wouldn't worry about the competition. One of them will most likely move. It's better for everyone if that happens.

How long before...

WB change the date for S Vs B? There is too much at stake for them. Besides they never opened a movie to kick-off summer. Why start now?

Hypothetically speaking, if it comes down to a game of chicken between WB and Marvel, I'd have to guess that WB would be the first to capitulate and move to a new release date. Marvel seems to handle their shit much better on matters like this.

I wonder how many years before Disney and WB decide to team up and brake our brains by doing a crossover movie. One can dream, can't he?

No doubt batman vs. Superman would win out but its still it is a bad idea financially to keep these on the same day or month for that matter.

I don't understand

why these studios keep arguing over summer spots. they can easily start expanding into the winter, people will still go see the movies. the only reason there's a drop off in ticket sales in the winter is because that's when they start putting out the Oscar bait. they can do both, all year long. no reason to break movies down into seasons.

More people with be in line to say how much they hate the new Batman, than will be in line to say how much they love the new Cap. If no one moves, bat/supes win by a landslide...

Both, no question.

You're telling me that I can walk in the movie theater on a Saturday and watch Capt. America battle Winter soldier and then I can go from that movie to see Batman and fucking Superman? That's the same feeling as getting up in your Return of the Jedi pajamas, making a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch and watching Saturday morning cartoons until Soul Train comes on.

One of them is going to move. It'll hurt ticket sales for both movies if they release on the same day. If anything, one will probably move up to the Wednesday before.

No matter what day BvsS opens, but any other superhero movie need at least 3 weeks! Take a look at any of the recent years, this movies always gives competitors 3 or 4 weeks. Look at 2014: Cap. America, Spidey, X-Men... you got 3 or 4 weeks between them. And you're talking about a Batman & Superman movie. C'on, Marvel is really stupid if they keep one of his movies on the same date or a week after!

Fisrt Come...

Marvel had the date first. Why should they move? The WB can stay arrogant or else do what they should have done in the first place, find an open spot. You don't think Marvel wanted May this year? But, ironically, Sony placed Spider-Man there early and Marvel respected that even though they get NOTHING from the Spider-Man film. Cap is in April because of it. It's called professional courtesy. The WB needs to find some.

They had the date first? Was it reserved for Cap 3, another planned film, or did they just reserve it knowing that they wanted to release something on that day?

Seems pretty stupid for both studios to put the same film up against one another where financially they will both hurt one another. And after Man of Steel not making as much money as Warner Brothers thought it would have, they need this win at the box office more than Marvel needs it. But I would not be surprised if DC backs up the film (again) into summer more giving it a June or July release. I also don't understand why Marvel wouldn't release Captain America 3 on July 4th of 2016. You

I'm more of a DC guy so I would probably see Batman vs Superman first then see Captain America 3 right after on the same day.

DC will move

I'll put my Monopoly money on Man of Steel 2 moving to the last weekend of June or sometime in July. They'll keep it where the dark knight series made its money. Plus, isn't X-Men apocalypse scheduled to come out around early May of 2016? So why have your biggest movie stuck in the middle

After people see Winter Soldier I'm sure they'll agree Cap has the hutzpah to take on Bats and Supes. Crazy to think but CA:WS is total bad assery. I am hoping for the best for Batman Superman though.

Again, the people in Hollywood.....

.....are freaking idiots! Why would you intentionally put what you hope to be the tentpole of a multi-billion dollar franchise against an established part of a multi-billion dollar franchise? It would be even dumber to put your film up the week before. If they stay close, whichever film goes first will have a major drop-off when the other opens. Better to let your competitor go first, enjoy his big week, then steal his thunder and cut off his repeat and word-of-mouth business.
