Captain America character posters remind us of the film's small roster

Jun. 1, 2011by: Paul Tassi

UPDATE - We've confirmed that these are not, in fact, official posters or banners for CAPTAIN AMERICA. It may be art given to promotional partners for merchandise tie-ins (like the art you'd see on a Slurpee cup maybe) but they're nothing you'll see hanging in your local movie theater.

GREEN LANTERN and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS can't have all the fun. CAPTAIN AMERICA has now come out with its own series of character posters, and they reveal that actually, there are a lot less characters in this film than there are in most superhero flicks these days.

Thor had his entire Asgard crew, GL has his Lanterns, and X-Men movie rosters are always huge. But Captain America? We only have him, Peggy Carter and Red Skull, and I can't even think of any more characters that would merit their own poster, save possibly Bucky.

I'm curious to see how a superhero flick will go with a smaller cast. The only other example I can think of recently of a non-ensemble cast has been THE DARK KNIGHT, which really only had Batman, Joker and Two-Face as major poster-worthy players. CapAm would seem to have even less, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

See the posters below or bigger at the Pimpin Poster Palace.

gah

These posters look horrible - particularly Peggy "photoshop removed any stray hair from my silhouette" Carter. They probably could have found a shot of Red Skull where he wasn't in the middle of snapping out a fart, but maybe that's a plus.

I find a kind of irony

In the lack of creative visuals from a studio responsible for decades of landmark comic books.

I have to confess I'm not up on the whole Captain America back story. Is Red Skull's real name Stanley Ipkiss?

Between these and the X-Men: First Class Posters

It seems studios are getting lazy when putting these things together.

Looks fake.

It looks like some fan found new pictures so he made his own posters for the movie. Chris Evan looks like he was photoshopped into the Cap suit.

Regardless I still think this movie's going to rule. And Red Skull fucking great!

Seems like another case of bad posters great film just like X-Men First Class. Why the need for individual character posters anyway? Is anyone other than a Nazi going to put up the Red Skull in their basement? And Peggy Carter is cute but they didn't give Pepper Potts a poster or Betty Ross. I don't get the point of these at all.

Look fake, hope they are, but with all the really nice (sarcasm alert) movie posters we've been getting since the early 90s I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't.
Like someone said down there somewhere, those movies are a comic book company movies, you'd think they would come up with nice work of art, but no.

And for a movie like Captain America they really should go with a nice painted WWII era "war propaganda" poster or series of posters.

WWII propaganda posters - Best idea I'll hear all day! Would love to see something like that hanging in my multiplex.

Love the idea, but it's too subtle and would never make it past the PR people. They want floating heads and weird photoshopping, not clever posters.

As average as these posters are I think it's good that there's a small roster, means it will be more character driven.

Are these fake or what?

I hope they are otherwise they're just incredibly lazy! Everything looks Photoshopped. From Peg's hair to Evan's head size on those shoulders to Red Skull's pose. And what is he doing? He's either jacking-off with two hands or is peeing after holding back for 7 years. Looking forward to this movie but damn these posters suck.

If I...

...had no idea this film existed and I chanced upon the Peggy one, I'd think, "My, they sure are taking that character in a different direction...". I mean, I could be off base but shouldn't there be character names on the non-Cap ones? And yeah, I can't not giggle like mad at that Red Skull one. Second Exar's and JoeChar's respective thoughts on that one.

I'm really looking forward to this, but damn these posters are bad!!! Where are the cool poses, they look like halloween costume pictures from some cheesy website! I hope these will go unnoticed by the public and won't effect the ticket sales!

I'll say it again Marvel. WWII "propaganda" style posters.

Who wouldn't want an awesome "Buy War Bonds. Support The Super Soldier Program" or a "I Want You For Howling Commandos"???

Hell, sketchy or not, who woudln't want a Red Skull/Hydra/Nazi propaganda style poster?

Extra Tidbit...

The tagline Only in Theaters I believe means that it is not in IMAX or 3D. Or at least that's what I think it is nowadays.

good thing small cast/ reminder about piracy

it's a good thing having small number of characters...i really feel GL is not going to be enuff film for everything in that deal...

yeah...it's def weird it says only in theaters...but i dont think it's got anything to do with straight to dvd thinkers...i bet it has more to to with a subtle reminder/warning about piracy.

It's no surprise movie posters keep getting shittier (assuming these are real). When was the last time you saw a movie based solely on the poster? In a digital age it's a dying art, studios realize this so they don't bother spending much time/money/effort on it anymore. Clearly.

Wasn't the Captain America movie that starred Dawson's Dad direct to video? Maybe that's why. It was obviously such a success that I referred to the star as "Dawson's Dad."

"Dawson's Dad" was John Wesley Shipp who played The Flash, Matt Salinger played Cap in the movie, and it was released in cinemas, albeit not many.

Thanks for the correction. I totally would have put money on my memory of staring at the box in Blockbuster all those years ago! Glad I didn't.

While I'm excited for Captain America and all the nods to the Avengers that will no doubt be shoehorned in, these posters are a tad bland, and the trailers have all ended before anything super cool happens in them. Maybe they're just saving all the impressive stuff for when we actually see it in the theater?
Tidbit: "Only in theaters" has always annoyed me, even as a kid before there was an internet or DVD bootlegs, that statement is all kinds of redundant.

Are these posters even legit? I don't see a Marvel.com watermark anywhere on them and I can't picture Marvel actually releasing something this horrible.

That tagline is really odd. one of the worst taglines ive ever seen. What is it supposed to mean? is it not coming to blu ray and dvd? No of course it is so the tagline literally makes no sense. Seriously thats the best they could come up with? sad!

Well the first product photo of Odin in Thor made it look like he was getting a savory BJ - and you guys all loved that movie, so don't jump to conclusions. Besides, these could easily be fake.
