Captain America is allegedly John Krasinski's to lose at this point

UPDATE - Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that John Krasinski is no longer a candidate for CAPTAIN AMERICA and the studios are currently deciding between Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund and Chris Evans...

Fox News is now reporting that their sources inside Paramount and Marvel are saying that John Krasinski is essentially a lock for the role of Captain America at this point. This is similar to rumors we heard when the shortlist of actors for the part came out, when then too it was said that Krasinski was the far and away frontrunner, but this comes with a lot more details.

"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests," our source tells us. "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."

"The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads. They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else."

The source goes on to say that if he gets the part, it’s a multi-film deal (obviously, with the upcoming AVENGERS) and that the guys at Marvel are a bit skeptical of having to work with “that guy from The Office.”

I still have no idea if this is the greatest or worst casting decision in history. I’m a huge Krasinski fan, and it’s awesome to see him up for a part this massive, but is he right for it? That’s a mental image that just doesn’t sit right in my head as his face and voice just don't seem to match what I picture as Captain America. I keep imagining Scott Porter or Chris Pine in the red white and blue.

Your guys' thoughts on all this?

Well...we all know how IMDB is
IMDB is incredibly inaccurate; nevertheless, they already have Krasinski announced for THE AVENGERS film and rumored as THE CAP.

This might be the one for him
He hasn't been in a good film since Cellular, but Chris Evans can pull this off. Hope he gets it.

C'mon Chris Evans!
Chris Evans would definitely be my pick out of the finalists at this point. I thought he pulled off a good superhero vibe in the Fan4 films and I loved him in Sunshine. The Losers looks pretty damn good too. Bring it Chris!

Damn.
He better be able to pull this off, God knows that he doesn't look the part. But then again I hated on Daniel Craig (Shame on me!) when he was announced as the new Bond, even after watching Layer Cake. So maybe there is a facet of his acting that he hasn't shown us yet ... get to it John!

I really think that Deadline article is bullshit. Every comment below it says that Krazinski is gonna get it. I think Krazinski is still at the front of the line still.

You could do worse than Krasinski, but at the same time I just can't believe he was at the top of the list. However, none of the other actors really seem like who I visioned for the role either.

Thank God!
I was so scared that Krasinski was going to be Captain America! It's bad enough he stole Emily Blunt all for himself now he is trying to take over Captain America. Basterd! I really hope Hedlund gets it. I've been a fan of his for some time. Great actor!

Bummer
Just as I was getting keen on the idea of Krasinski as Cap. Cap was an art student before becoming cap after all... sure the actor should be "iconic" but he should also be a bit awkward, especially if we're examining his origins. His nerdyness is key to his humble heroics. NO chris evans, cap is not

He seems a better fit for ANTMAN not CAPTAIN AMERICA, I still think Sam Worthington would be a good choice for the Capt. plus it seems like they're casting really young dudes to play Capt. and THOR, I think they should all be around the same age.

He's alright in the office. Not right for Captain America. However, I hope I'm proven wrong. Between this casting choice, The Wolfman, and Jurrasic Park 3, I'm certain Joe Johnston was the wrong choice to direct.

The amount of stock people put in physical resemblance is ridiculous. We'd end up with pro-wrestlers and pornstars considering how intentionally ridiculous superhero proportions are.

York demeanor while also being able to pull off intensity, urgency, and gymnastic prowess kicking bad guy backside.

Ryan Reynolds could sort of do it, except he's too much the smartass, and brings too much baggage to the role besides.

What sells me most on John Krasinski getting the roll is the range and depth he pulled off in Away We Go. So he has my vote over any big chinned pretty boys or iron pumping no neck. I'll vote for the guy that seems like he could've been a scrawny, artistic kid from Brooklyn turned into a superhero through chance, determination, and of course, performance enhancing drugs.

Welllll....
Welllll, if you forget the comics and that Steve Rogers was a skinny, blonde, blue-eyed American boy that became a blonde, blue-eyed American super-soldier, then, maybe I guess. But wait...isn't this SUPPOSED to be a COMIC BOOK HERO transferred to the big screen? Did I mention, BLONDE, BLUE EYED yet? Maybe contacts and a hair dye like Jessica Alba?

Allll-righty then....

i'm a fan of Krasinski but I just don't see him in this role.

if he gets it and it turns into something like Keaton in Batman then that's awesome.

at the moment i am of the mind that Scott Porter or Chris Pine would be better fits.

I gotta say, there's been worse casting in movies. It's not obvious, and he's not making a comeback like Downey was. At this time he might be the biggest draw. Who knew the kid from Newsies would be an amazing Batman? Or teen heartthrob from 10 Thing IHAY would be an amazing Joker. Heck, I had doubts about the crazy drug addict playing Iron Man.

What I have come to expect is to believe in these choices. Steve Rogers was a lanky guy and kind of nerdy. John fits that perfectly. He can easily buff up and be a leader. Give him a chance.

HOW?
How is Jim from The Office supposed to play the man who punched Hitler? Captain America is supposed to be jacked and unless he pulls some crazy method acting out of his ass it's going to be like watching Spiderman in World War II. Every other decision in Marvel films has made sense so far; even Edward Norton in the average Hulk movie. what's he going to do; put the Red Skull's stapler in Jello?...

Stranger ideas have worked.

For the WW2 stuff, he actually looks great. He is a tall, lanky everyman. For the superhero stuff...look, shave his head, wipe the goofy smile off his face, put some cool sunglasses on him or something. CGI will do the rest. It really could work.

Smells of Joe Johnson
JJ is friends with JK's fiance. This isn't like Nolan (A great director) casting Heath Ledger (A character actor). This is like Joe Johnson casting the guy from the office. He's the reason I stopped watching the office but I don't hold the bad dialogue against him. He just isn't Captain America. I think our generation is pretty bad, we've all been forced to watch Shia Labeuf as an action star....

Tony Stark shouldn't be bigger then Capt. America, muscle wise.

Lone Wolf, very smart
I like what Lone Wolf has to say, it is Marvel's character but the studio is just looking for a name to fill seats, which is what they always do. They should listen to Marvel, because i didn't Nic Cage filling the seats for Ghost Rider, a big name can't overcome a shitty concept and poorly produced comic book film, no names are the way to go, The Crow, and if you recall who was Bale before...

No one denied Bale as Batman, in fact I thought he woould be the ideal batman after AMERICAN PSYCHO, his monologue was the epitome of The Dark Knight, and no one doubted Downey Jr. either, because they both look the part, but Krasinski is lanky and gawky and Captain America isn't. No weights can fix that.

I think he would actually make a great Captain America as oppose to someone like Matthew McCanahey (no idea how to spell his last name). Im a huge fan of this guy and Jim is my favorite character on The Office. The guy can act and like Iron Man, I think Krasinski can breathe real life into Captain America

Stretch of Character
I don't watch the office, so I don't know his demeanor, but just in terms of selling this to the public - its going to be hard. Most people, I guarantee you, won't see him outside of his Office, rom-com sort of roles that we have seen him in. Other than that I like the idea. It goes without saying he is going to have to bulk up but its different. I like different

Yes, I'm sure many here will break their sacred vows and watch some pirated cam version of it at some point..

I actually think it's good for marketability. For people who don't like comic book movies, it'd at least make some ears perk up. Yeah, he's known right now for rather "soft" roles, but come on. This is ACTING. I'd say this would be the first major challenge for the guy to break his stereotype.

And I think people will be interested to see if he's up for it.

This is a very odd choice but I can definitely see it working. I'm not too big on Captain America but wasn't he suppose to be some skinny, sickly guy before he got injected with the Super Soldier Serum? If thats so Krasinski's got the perfect form for that. Shoot those scenes early and give him time to bulk up and I can definitely see it working.

I'm a big fan of Krasinski's and I think it's about time that he stopped doing the same "Jim" role over and over again and broke out of his shell.

He has a lot of range on The Office for those scenes that break from the comedy and I am definitely interested.

And Michael Keaton couldn't play Batman . . .
. . . and Christian Bale couldn't be Batman, either. And Robert Downey Jr. couldn't be Tony Stark. And Heath Ledger couldn't be The Joker. And no one could replace Christopher Reeve as Superman.

I have an idea. Why don't we WAIT UNTIL THE MOVIE IS MADE, and then see what happens.

Odd...
I find it interesting (and a little disconcerting) that the "key decision makers" are pysched but the "guys at Marvel" are a bit skeptical. Hearing that they're 2 separate groups and not 1 in the same bothers me.

And Krasinski does not strike me as type to play CapAm either, but we haven't seem him DO anything with the role yet so I'll reserve judgement until then.
