Captain Jack Sparrow coming atcha: Pirates 4 will be in 3D

05.17.2010

Let's all just accept it: when it comes to any minor, moderate or major genre movie, 3D is going to be the inescapable reality.

Disney is bringing the fourth voyage of Captain Jack Sparrow to theaters next year, and it too will come with that additional dimension. The good news is that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will actually shoot in the 3D format (which the Mouse House has apparently branded Disney Digital 3D), meaning it won't suffer the inferior conversion process.

Despite the extra tech, the movie is still due May 20th, 2011.

POTC:OST is being directed by Rob Marshall (CHICAGO, NINE) and has Johnny Depp joined by Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and relative newcomers Astrid Berges-Frisbey and Sam Claflin (with Geoffrey Rush expected to surface as well). This time around, everyone is searching for the Fountain of Youth.

Extra Tidbit: 3D or not, I don't care... I just want it to make sense and be less than four hours long (or feel like it).

I really don't mind the 3D thing or not?.Theaters here locally usually only run the 2D print anyway. My reaction to the new "Pirates Of The Caribbean" is basically after 3 exhaustive films - enough is enough. It all becomes indistinguishable after the 1st two.(maybe the even the debut film)

I want this to be good

I am afraid that it isnt going to work and Johnny will end up ruining the character of Captain Jack and it wont be his fault.

Or maybe this movie will be a musical and Johnny Depp will reveal the power of dance that he hidden from us all these years.

No Kiera!?

She better show up in there somewhere! and I've said it before and I'll say it again: unless any film is actually filmed for 3D I'll pay that extra $$ to see it, not if it's converted later.

I couldn't agree more with the Tidbit!!
WHY THE F*CK do movies have to be so freaking long these days? I say 100 to 120 minutes will do fine!!

The first Pirates worked because Jack was a supporting character (his antics used sparingly) and had a clearly defined arc. In order to be a success, this one needs to do the same. Jack as the main focus doesn't work if his character doesn't go through some type of transformation (e.g. DMC and AWE)

I disagree, the focus should be on Jack. I think the focus on Will killed a good part of the sequels. I do agree though they need to not make Jack so silly all the time. He was way to off the wall in the third one.

I love Jack Sparrow.. I saw the original Pirates of the Caribbean on a Disney cruise during opening weekend and there was just a vibe in the audience that you could tell meant future franchise... they even had to play it a second night because it was in such high demand of the guests. The sequels were lacking in the charm and wit of the first and If they can get back to that spirit and fun then we have something going here. I'm approaching with caution though.

This sounds pretty awesome. It won't be a shitty transfer. As far as the POTC movies go, the stories were kind of a mess but the characters and the beautiful cinematography are what made these movies so awesome to me. Now that the 2 weakest characters will be out and a better director on board we should get something pretty good. Ian McShane as a pirate too...I almost shit my pants when I heard that one. I can't wait for this one.

Sure

I'm sick of the 3D craze, But I like the POTC films. They remind of the old Doug McClure films and all the old Sinbad films I would go to the drive-in and see as a kid (just with a bigger budget and better effects). So I am on board for a new Jack adventure, even in 3D I guess

Well, if it IS being SHOT in 3D a-la Avatar, it might be alright. But I still think it's a shame to take such a potentially colorful Caribbean-set film like this and run it through the 30% color loss that occurs with the 3D glasses. Fuck it, I'm still seeing this in 2D, that is, if 2D still exists when it comes out.... :(

Meh. I like Jack Sparrow as much as the next guy, but three films is enough really. I think it would have been better if they had ressurected the character ten years from now, when everyone had forgotten about the third film. But, I guess Depp would be too old to be Sparrow again, wouldn't he?

First was excellent, and took me completely by surprise when I first went to see it.

Second was a disappointment on first watch, but I've come to enjoy it since.

Third was an improvement on the second, if only for the re-appearance of Geoffrey Rush and the appearance of Mr Cool himself, Chow Yun-Fat. Also I couldn't help but laugh with evil joy as Keira and Orlandos characters pretty much got the shit end of the stick when the credits had rolled. Brilliant.

At least...

At least they're shooting it in 3D, that's a very good sign. Still, I'm not sure if I'll see the 3D version. Then again, a lot of scenes are probably going to be shot solely for the 3D effect...so probably watching it sans the dorky colorful glasses isn't really a good idea.

That's cool

I'm not really a fan of 3D, but i'll still watch this. I personally think Dead Mans Chest was the best of the trilogy. It had the right mixture of everything and it was all pretty fantastic. If this movie can be more like that, or even like part one, but nothing like three, then it'll be cool.

Though Am I think only one who hopes Depp does another Suspence/Thriller type film, like he did with "Nick of Time?" Or will Tim Burton not let him do movies like that anymore?

I for one loved all the films and can't wait for this one, and if you don't like 3D then simply don't watch it in that format. problem solved!

With Rob Marshall directing, this one is going to blow huge chunks all over everything. He's one of the worst directors around, and as soon as he attaches his name to something, it quickly becomes putrid.

As for the series itself, I like it, but am not sure if we need a forth.

First one was great, second one was good, but the third one I had no idea what the hell was going on. I kind of wish Depp would move on and do more "meatier" movies and roles like Blow or something that doesn't deal with Tim Burton, even though I love their movies together. Also, I had a a good time watching the first one IN 2D. Pretty sure I don't need to see this in 3D to enjoy it.

I hate these POTC movies. GREAT ideas and cast, but otherwise bloated bland quasi-epics.
