Updated: Carlton Cuse's Jack Ryan TV series has found a home at Amazon

09.29.2015

UPDATE: Well that didn't take very long, it has now been reported that the Jack Ryan TV series has found a home at Amazon as the streaming service has given it a series order. Will you be watching?

Over the course of five films and four actors, the Jack Ryan franchise based upon Tom Clancy's books has slowly sputtered out. The latest film, JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT, managed to squander its great cast in a story that felt small and forgettable; but don't count Jack Ryan out just yet, Deadline reports that he may be making the leap to television as Carlton Cuse, Graham Roland, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, and Paramount TV have had multiple networks bidding on their new take on the character.

According to Deadline the potential television show will not be a direct adaptation of the books, but will instead be "a new contemporary take on the character in his prime as a CIA analyst/operative using the novels as source material." The character of Jack Ryan has appeared in five films so far; THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER with Alec Baldwin, PATRIOT GAMES and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER with Harrison Ford, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS with Ben Affleck, and finally JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT which had Chris Pine taking on the role. As audiences are already accustomed to a revolving door of Jack Ryan's, the series should manage to overcome the hurdle that other film-to-television adaptations have been faced with, that of audiences strongly identifying the character with the actor portraying him or her on film.

There's no word on which network may end up with the new series, but Deadline has said that there is a lot of interest in the project. Let us know if you'd be interested in a Jack Ryan series, who you see playing the character, and which of the feature films was your favourite in the comments!

Wait, a new contemporary take? That got me worried.

Hopefully Jack will be more like Alec was, the every man thrown into a terrible situation, and not Bourne. But I am sure he will be a martial arts master, genius analyst, hacker, code breaker, double agent, and the savior of the CIA. So boring!

Finally! This has been such an obvious choice for so long that I was always puzzled why the franchise owners didn't go for the small screen years ago. There you can develope a widespread conspiracy story around espionage and perverted patriotism without feeling pushed to resort to big budget action set pieces. You can go for smaller scale action but more tension and character development which was lacking from the last few cinema outings. TV is the right home for this series. Now get some good

Now get some good writers and do not sell it to the likes of CBS who will turn it into a case of the week borefest but rather a cable network with the balls to go for a complex season arc!

If done right, it can work. Definitely a lot of potential in an on-going series.

My only fear is that it will end up on network TV and come off as a watered down version of Homeland. But who knows...

Could Work

The best of the movies was "Patriots Game" with Harrison Ford & Sean Bean as the Baddie. "Clear & Present Danger" had the best fire fight/ambush scene, though. As for who should play Jack Ryan on TV, I favor an Unknown. Someone (probably an Aussie, Brit, or Canadian) who has physical presence--and not an American actor "BoyMan, that Shia LeBeouf was the prototype. Finally, I agree with the other comment that it will need the pacing and intensity of "24" to resurrect this franchise.

If this turns out to be a fast paced action series like 24, I'm game.

This sucks. I enjoyed Shadow Recruit and was hoping to see Pine in the role again.

Well, if this ends up as just another procedural type show with CIA agents going after bad guys/terrorists each week, then I'm out.
I still think Hunt for Red October was the best movie, and Alec Baldwin the best Ryan. During Mission: Impossible 5, I kind of pretended Baldwin's CIA character was an older Jack Ryan.
