UPDATE: Carrie Fisher returning to Star Wars: Episode VII as Princess Leia

Mar. 6, 2013by: Niki Stephens

UPDATE: Carrie Fisher's reps have come out and said that she was joking when it came to statements regarding her involvement in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: "She was joking. Nothing has been announced." Did Fisher leak the news too early? Or was she just toying with our emotions?

After avoiding tons of questions about her involvement with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII for so long, Carrie Fisher has finally broke her silence with a confirmation that she will return to the role of Princess Leia.

With rumors of Harrison Ford, I guess that means the whole gang is getting back together. But how much screentime will they get? What about the rumors of Han and Leia's kids getting the lead in this episode? We'll have to wait and see. Knowing Abrams, he won't give us much until the day of release.

This is the answer Fisher gave to the Palm Beach Illustrated when asked about her involvement:

Q: Disney is going to continue the Star Wars saga, producing movies set to hit theaters starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether youll reprise the role of Princess Leia?

A: Yes.

Then she went on to say what she thought Leia looked like and would be doing:

"Elderly. Shes in an intergalactic old folks home [laughs]. I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle."

I love her.

Awesome!

...as long as they keep her and possibly Luke and Han in small, supporting roles. I'm thinking maybe a little less screen time than Obi Wan in A New Hope. Focusing too much on the stars of the original trilogy will distract from the new characters we'll undoubtedly be meeting

Great! I hope it happens, I'd also love to see her take a pass at some of the dialogue. The SW universe could use it.

Cool.

Still have my fingers crossed for Billy Dee Williams also coming back as Lando, at least for a cameo.

not convinced...

ouch, not sure u all have seen Fisher lately nor read the few book series taking place 40 years after Jedi -- the Leia in those stories is now an active Jedi and described as still elegantly attractive for her age -- not convinced including Fisher, Hamill nor Ford is a good idea!

New Jedi Order spanned 20 books and was fantastic - the "Yuuzhan Vong" are the perfect nemesis for the new movies! New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi absolutely should be considered 'canon'. If it wasnt for the EU, we wouldnt have Boba Fett back - he's gotta be included in the new movies...

This is exactly why the Expanded Universe should not be considered canon. It hinders the movies. It puts up walls, and stifles creativity. The Expanded Universe should just be considered as peripheral entertainment, and little else.

I don't like it. I can see Luke coming back, and there is a precedent there with the aging Jedi a la Obi-Wan, but seeing Han Solo and Leia as geriatrics is going to take me out of the film and, frankly, depress the shit out of me. I don't mean to sound unkind, but Carrie Fisher has not aged well. It would take a rather extraordinary story for me to feel like these characters are other than simply shoehorned into these films for the sake of nostalgia.

People get older. It is realistic for them to be thirty years older if the movie is set thirty years after the last trilogy.

I'm glad this is pretty much confirmed! I'd love to know if Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2 are coming back - plus Lando, of course.

It's interesting that Fisher and Ford are now returning after Lucas hands over the Star Wars universe (heh heh heh).

I'm looking forward to their return...

Everyone forgets that Mark Hammil was the first one to say that he was returning and that Carrie Fisher would be coming with him. This is just Carrie Fisher confirming what Mark Hammil said.

Pointless question, but is she still a princess after her homeworld and presumably the rest of the royal family got pulverised by the Death Star? Princess of a non existant world/eradicated regal dynasty, and if she's the last one left why not upgrade herself to Queen of not a planet anymore. Maybe she reigns over the asteroid field that used to be Alderaan. What? Too soon?

Cool to have her back

and there's nothing wrong with Fisher these days that a few trips to the gym won't cure. And they could always get her to do a buff-n'-polish on the script while they're at it.

This was NOT a rumor. We reported what she had said. Now she's saying that she was "joking". Not sure how our site gets blamed for this.

She was joking. Figures, since we haven't had any concrete anything on the movies yet. Still, it would really be cool.

Translation

"Miss Fisher was expressing her personal desire to be in the Star Wars films. Her personal trainer assures her she will be ready in time to start filming but Mr. Abrams reserves the right to recast the role of Princess Leia if he deems it necessary."

So what if she was joking. She's going to return, you all know it. We just have to wait for them to put pen to paper and sign on the dotted line. The core characters will hopefully be used as supporting characters to transition into the new cast. For everyone saying they should be killed off, I don't agree. I think Luke Skywalker can be a reoccurring character as the head of the new Jedi Order and is constantly there as a spiritual advisor to our new heroes. And have Leia and Han as

I think Luke Skywalker can be a reoccurring character as the head of the new Jedi Order and is constantly there as a spiritual advisor to our new heroes. And have Leia and Han as higher-ups in the New Republic/Galactic Alliance, kind of like an Admiral Ackbar or Mon Mothma. But the stories themselves will focus mainly on the new characters.
And everyone that keeps bringing up the EU, give it a rest. Sure they are great stories and offer an honorable expansion of Star Wars beyond ROTJ, for the purposes of the movie they don't need to honor every single detail of the books. It's ok if Carrie Fisher gets old and that's not how it's described in the book, believe it or not the world will still continue to spin tomorrow....at least until a Death Star shows up, whomp whomp.

And also

Other characters who should return:
Lando Calrissian
Chewbacca
Wedge Antilles
Red 2 - that fat bastard always showed up in every movie during a space fight and got blown up everytime.
Boba Fett
And there's still probably plenty more to add.

There's a story on imdb with Lucas spilling the beans that Hamill, Fisher and Ford were all in the final stages of negotiations, but no one is supposed to make any indications about it yet.

That's awesome and all, but... I kind of wish they would just do something totally new with Star Wars- the first trilogy was the story of Darth Vader, let's start an all new story with all new characters.
