Cast revealed for kickboxer reboot; now includes Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa

08.05.2014by:

The upcoming 3D KICKBOXER reboot has added two more cast members to round out the martial arts flick. Scott Adkins (ZERO DARK THIRTY) and Tony Jaa (ONG BAK) will join the previously announced Dave Bautista (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY), former UFC welterweight champion George St. Pierre (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER) and Alain Moussi (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST).

Stephen Fung (TAI CHI HERO) is directing the story that follows Kurt Sloan (Moussi), a talented martial artist who travels to Thailand where he must learn the secrets of the kickboxer to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Tong Po (Bautista).

KICKBOXER is set to feature a variety of over 20 martial arts disciplines; "Kickboxer will display a style of acrobatic, rapid-fire martial arts action that Scott Adkins is increasingly becoming synonymous with," said Brian O’Shea, CEO of The Exchange, the company behind the film. "Along with Tony Jaa, Kickboxer has compiled a talented cast to push the boundaries of the martial arts form." You could say this has turned into a martial arts version of THE EXPENDABLES! That’s a pretty great cast for a remake and in 3D no less; I’ve seen the original, it’s not as good as BLOODSPORT in my opinion, but is anything?

With casting now set in place for the remake of the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, what do you guys think?

I dunno

This movie is a piece of my childhood as much as RoboCop, Ninja Turtles, Batman and Home Alone 2. THis was a movie i could watch endlessly. The amount of times i've watch Van Damme kick that fucking palm tree over i can't even begin to count.

Now thats not to say i'm against this as much as i just hope they don't cock it up. I mean even the little bit about Eric being killed by Tong Po doesn't make much sense unless you're changing the lead up to the final fight. Anyways as long as they keep

Anyways as long as they keep in the key scenes i'll be happy. I need to see Kurt in the 'Splits' rig, I need to see Kurt drunkenly dance and then kick the shit out of 10 guys, i need to see Tong Po kicking that fucking pillar, the previously mentioned 'tree kicking' scene....... Oh yeah, the Coconut in the tree bit as well! :D

Y'know, I'm all for it. Here's why:

1) They actually got honest-to-god martial arts and screen fighters for this movie

2) Stephen Fung has quite a bit of experience in the Hong Kong film industry already, which been has touted as the golden standard of action cinema (especially in martial arts cinema)
3) If this movie is in 3-D, this will probably dissuade a lot of shaky-cam and quick cuts.

See, now why can't The Raid remake's cast be like this...

...instead of freakin' Taylor Kitsch?

Excellent casting news! Now this is how you do it! The dudes behind the Raid remake should take note.

I like the old Kick Boxer in all its Van Dam-ness. I used to watch it on VHS all the time in the 90s. With that said, I don't think I mind a remake of this film. Since Batista is playing Tong Po, who is Yaa's character?

Ok, when I first heard they were doing a remake of Kickboxer, my initial reaction was, "WTF WHY! NO!"

Now that I have seen the cast I have to say I'm intrigued. I've always said Scott Adkins needs to be in more main stream movies. Hopefully he gets a meaty role. Also, Tony Jaa is nothing short of entertaining whenever he fights. Dave Bautista has slightly won me over with his role as Drax, so I like him as Tong Po.

If there's a remake I'd like to see, it's Bloodsport and Van Damme can even the villain.

I know a lot of people hold Kickboxer sacrosanct, but look at this cast: Dave Bautista, Georges St. Pierre, Scott Adkins, Tony Ja...you can't say they don't have lots of fighting experience.
