Cast This: Ant-Man

May. 11, 2012by:

Let's jump right in on this week's "Cast This", shall we?

This week, Edgar Wright received an an interesting piece of Ant-Man centric art in the post. I'm not sure what it meant. Perhaps it was some unfinished bathroom signs? That sneaky little director didn't give us any clues. All he does is tease. I want some satisfaction, Wright.

So maybe one day we will get an Ant-Man movie. Wright still wants to do it. The story of Ant-Man begins with Henry Pym. While people do get sick of origin stories, this is one that definitely needs to be told. Ant-Man isn't one of your Batmans or Supermans in terms of popularity. Basically, Pym isn't a household hero. Ant-Man, also known as biochemist Henry Pym discovered subatomic particles that reduced his size to that of an ant. That fancy little helmet he wears? Pym created that to control and communicate with the ants. If you want more background, read up here.

Well, I'm not here to discuss the techincals of the movie, just here to get your ideas for Ant-Man. Who will it be? Who is the best fit for Edgar Wright's Ant-Man?

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': LOBO

1. Jeffrey Dean Morgan 2. Kevin Durand 3. Jason Momoa

No big surprises in these results, at least not to me anyway. I've heard these names any time the subject comes up. Reader Hyperkulturemia mentioned that the role needed to go to someone who was "built like a tank and has comedic chops". I don't doubt that any of these guys could get jacked, but can they be funny? Morgan has shown this quality, especially in WATCHMEN. I know that's the obvious answer, but that was the sort of humor that Lobo conveys. What about Durand and Momoa? Both have done comedies, but can they get that Lobo personality?

There's this actor... looks a little like if Scott Caan had a baby with Marv from Sin City.... I know it's vague, but THAT GUY would be perfect as Ant Man.

Nathan Fillion.

Would love to finally see him have his break at a big starring role and would love for him to reteam with Whedon again in the Avenger universe.

Simon Pegg. I know it sounds cliche because Edgar Wright is directing, but consider Pegg's impressive action credentials. A wholly convincing turn as serious cop-turned one-liner spewing hero in Hot Fuzz. Followed by Star Trek and most recently Ghost Protocol. He can play brainy, he can play funny, and he can play a convincing action lead.

And also because quite frankly after Ghost Protocol I can't get enough humorous banter between Pegg & Jeremy Renner.

Way back, Edgar Wright metioned that both Hank Pym and Scott Lang, his successor, were in the script, so maybe Pegg could play Lang?

No. Just plain no. Theres nothing about Simon that says Henry Pym. I love Pegg as much as the next guy but hes no Antman/gaintman.

Nathan Fillion, ofcourse

Because inspite of being a fan favorite and a frequently came up name, he NEVER DID actually get cast on any big movies till date. This very much can be his first foray into being the superstar he so rightfully deserve.

Otherwise, Alan Tudyk, another Browncoat.

Nathan Fillion!

Although I love the originality of TarantinoDork's idea to use Simon Pegg (which I can support, actually), Fillion actually has Joss Whedon backing him. Add to that fact that he rocks anytime he works on anything comic-book related says that he's the right man for the job. Add to that fact that Morena Baccarin is perfect for Janet Van Dyne, and we're set for an awesome Ant-Man movie.

I think Aaron Eckhart could do a really good job in the role. I know he's already been Harvey Dent and his alter ego, but I think he's a decent choice for Pym.

I'd go with Jared Padalecki of "Supernatural" fame. He has that certain looks of confidence and I'm sure he can pull it off.

as soon as I saw the headline I said to myself "who will be the first dork to mention that D-list tv actor no one outside of nerdsville has ever heard of named nathan fillion?"

and here you are, right on cue. I am sure if I scroll down I'll find a few more of you.

Problem

If you'll recall, Edgar Wright made mention that both incarnations of Ant-Man, Hank Pym and Scott Lang, were in the script, so we should probably be casting for TWO parts here, but I understand that'd be a clusterfuck...

Anyway, I like the Alan Tudyk suggestion. He's been long overdue for a breakout role and he DESERVES to be among The Avengers.

However, I'm gonna throw a curveball your way and go with Jeremy Davies from LOST, Justified and Saving Private Ryan.

That's actually pretty genius casting. Never thought of that, but "Faraday" as Hank Pym would not only be a fitting choice, it'd be fairly awesome as well. Thank you, Smiert.

Davies is actually a really good choice! i know from LOST that he can pull off the science talk without sounding too much like an actor and hes a little physically smaller then the other Avengers so Ant Man would be cool. Nice one!

I've seen the blogs and tumblrs all professing their love for a Fillion Ant Man and Bacharin Wasp. Which in all honesty is pretty cool, especially after that bit with Nathan and RDJ. My issue would be how would they tackle the spousal abuse issue with him in the role, that would so freak me out.

I'd love Nathan Fillion or Alan Tudyk, but if neither of them could do it i'd like to throw an oddball in. Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice, hes age appropriate, in pretty good shape, and a decent actor. I could buy him as either Hank Pym or Scott Lang.

Nathan Fillion!

But it would be a mistake to make Pym the hero of his own movie. I was hoping for a cameo in the Avengers. He needs to be in the sequel, and be the douchebag he is in the comics. and he needs to be working on Ultron. Oh, and Morena would be great as Janet.

My impression is that the ultimate version needs a funny, witty guy, that is a bit of a scumbag.

The original version is a intelligent, very down to earth scientist kind of guy.

So there is a big difference in characters, and so, actors.

Reason: General Public doesn't know who Ant Man is, so they need a high profile comedic actor like Owen Wilson to buzz film and generate interest. Wilson as Ant Man can pull of nuerotic and smart. Wilson has screen presence, he has comedic talent, audiences like Wilson, and are always on his side nomatter how insecure and indecisive he behaves on-screen. Wilson is also a handsome man, which I understand Ant Man is. A Dark and Funny SuperHero Movie with Owen Wilson as Ant Man
