Cast This: Catwoman and Poison Ivy for David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

The DC Comics Extended Universe is slowly congealing with the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE and other solo superhero features like WONDER WOMAN, AQUAMAN, THE FLASH and BATMAN.

However, the box office hit SUICIDE SQUAD created another opportunity to add a different angle on the DCEU thanks to Margot Robbie's breakout bat-swinging performance as flexible felon Harley Quinn, which has resulted in the upcoming spinoff movie GOTHAM CITY SIRENS.

While the project is still in development (with star/producer Robbie reuniting with SUICIDE SQUAD director David Ayer), there's no doubt that the movie will take a page from the Paul Dini-penned comics and team Quinn with criminal colleagues Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

We don't know what events will bring the trio of notorious costumed supervillains together, but the movie will surely feature some nefarious exploits (or potential anti-hero adventures against a common foe) from hammer-wielding troublemaker Harley and her two new accomplices, the devious gymnastic thief Selina Kyle and alluring plant-controlling doctor Pamela Isley.

It won't be the first time these gals gathered for lawbreaking antics — even before the 2009-2011 comic series, Harley and Ivy teamed up as the "Queens of Crime" on the outstanding "Batman: The Animated Series", and they later roped in Catwoman for the animated web series "Gotham Girls".

And who will share the screen with these lethal ladies for their first big crime? Based on the success of SUICIDE SQUAD, we can probably expect appearances from Will Smith's Deadshot along with Ben Affleck's Batman, plus at some point Harley's relationship with sociopathic sweetheart the Joker (Jared Leto) will likely be addressed.

It might be a tall order considering the excessive machismo of David Ayer's previous filmography, but it would be nice to see those male characters relegated to cameos (if they show up at all). GOTHAM CITY SIRENS seems like the perfect chance to introduce Batgirl or Batwoman into the live-action DC world, perhaps along with vigilante Huntress and mischievous magician Zatanna to give the girls some heroic female foils (and conveniently provide a future Cast This column).

So who should slip into the skintight suit of Catwoman and wield the flora and fauna as Poison Ivy to join Harley?

Eva Green practically seems like she was born to slink and purr as Selina and her cat-suited alter-ego. Sofia Boutella (KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE) would bring impressive athleticism and an exotic quality to the role, and dammit I still want to see Jessica Biel playing a major comic character (especially after her brief cat costume scene in that Adam Sandler movie).

And for Catwoman's equally dangerous counterpart, Evan Rachel Wood adeptly demonstrated her range and skill with genre material on HBO's "Westworld". She would make a killer Ivy, as would GREEN ROOM's Imogen Poots.  And Teresa Palmer (WARM BODIES) deserves another shot at playing a DC character after her turn as Talia al Ghul in George Miller's JUSTICE LEAGUE project fell through.

Let us know below who you think would fit the parts for Catwoman and Poison Ivy!

As for the previous Cast This column for who should direct THE FLASH movie, there were some inspired suggestions like Stephen Chow, John Michael McDonagh, Damien Chazelle and David Gordon Green. But the top picks were:

1. Matthew Vaughn  2. Edgar Wright  3. Doug Liman
