Cast This: Connor MacLeod aka The Highlander

It’s only a matter of time until we finally get the long-gestating remake of the 1980s classic HIGHLANDER. We’ve heard reports for years about possible stars being attached and directors at the helm but still, nothing is locked and ready to go. So with that, we can sit back and play with some ideas about who might take on the all-important lead that is Connor MacLeod.

lambert highlander

The fictional character of Connor MacLeod  is a tortured hero; he was chosen by fate and takes on the responsibility of saving mankind from evil in the Highlander film series, as well as the television programs Highlander: The Series, and Highlander: The Animated Series. In the theatrical films, he was portrayed by the iconic Christopher Lambert. The film narrates the climax of an ages-old battle between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present day storylines. It’s definitely worth checking out if you have never seen the cult classic.

highlander movie

Ryan Reynolds, everyone’s new favorite superhero, was once attached to play the immortal Scotsman, the role made famous by Lambert in the 1986 original. Of course fan reaction at the time was negative, but one has to wonder what the reaction would sound like now with his sudden resurgence.  Personally, I would like to see a younger Connor to kick off a new series of films. I don’t even need the remake or MacLeod character if they want to liven things up with change. It would be nice however to cast someone who looks like they could be a 16th century Scottish warrior and then clean up for a more present time lifestyle.

I’ll begin with everyone’s favorite bastard son, Kit Harington. The young English actor has quickly risen to fame thanks to his role as Jon Snow on HBO’s Game of Thrones series and subsequently is now known the world over, something that would only help his case for the part of The Highlander. He’s got the grit and rough edges to pull it off I think, and accent doesn’t hurt. Another actor I had in mind was Joel Edgerton (WARRIOR, ANIMAL KINGDOM). He’s on the edge of leading man status and is clearly capable of giving strong and emotional performances in any genre it would be safe to say. For him to take on a remake of the Highlander franchise would be great for him and welcomed by fans I’m sure. If Kit was my young option, Edgerton and finally Ewan McGregor are my veteran choices for the part. McGregor’s Scottish heritage is something he holds close to his heart as he often mentions his love for the country and its history. Perhaps this would be a dream role for him, someone should ask! He’s one of my favorite actors (having been born in Scotland, I’m a little biased though) and to see him play a Scottish hero in Connor McLeod would be fantastic.

highlander picks

Now it’s your turn. Who would you like to see give out some beheadings with a giant sword? Another Scottish actor for the part could be Gerard Butler. He’s got the physical aspect of the part down right? What about fan favourite Thomas Jane (THE PUNISHER, THE MIST)? He has that uncanny resemblance to Christopher Lambert working for him, but of course he’s also the oldest of the mentioned actors at 47. Let us know your picks down below and remember...there can be only one.

James MacAvoy as McLeod
Ray Stevenson as the Kurgan
Antoni Banderas as Ramirez

Even though Professor X isn't the most action heavy of roles,I think his prominent place in the past few X-Men films has definitely increased MacAvoy's visibility and giving him a wide enough audience that he can head up a major franchise (Wanted made bank back in the day, but that was more due to Jolie's star power than MacAvoy's.)

Yes to real Scots

I'm in total agreement about casting a Scottish guy. There are definitely enough good Scottish actors out there that there's no reason to have to endure some Americano doing his best Groundskeeper Willie impersonation for an entire movie. With that in mind, my top picks would be either...
1. Sam Heughan -- In ways, he's almost too obvious. "Outlander" seems practically like an audition piece for a big-budget "Highlander" remake. Then again, that's kind of how I felt about Daniel Craig and

Then again, that's kind of how I felt about Daniel Craig and "Layer Cake" when he was up for Bond, but that turned out pretty well. On the other hand, if they wanted to cast younger...
2. Richard Madden -- Cool actor who, for whatever reason, hasn't quite broken out quite the way I would've expected following "GoT" and "Cinderella." (I mean, seriously, he's got to be the only actor his age NOT rumored for the Han Solo spinoff, right?) I could see him being a great choice.

As for Ramirez, if we're going to make the "only real Scottish actors for Connor" thing a rule, then the same should hold true. Cast a Spaniard. And for a supporting role like this, it might help to have a more recognizable face given that neither Heughan nor Madden are exactly household names, so I would nominate either Javier Bardem or Antonio Banderas. Obvious, sure, but either one would bring a lot to the role.

If they do remake this why do you think he will be Scottish. He will probably be an American dude and Lambert can play Connery's role. But in all honesty if this does get remade Connor will probably become Connie a transgendered person of color.

Highlanders are from the Scottish Highlands. That would be like in The Wicker Man making the Lord Summerisle of teh island Summerisle an American woman. Oh, wait...

Mark Ruffalo. He's got those eyes, man... those "I've seen some shit" sad eyes that I think would fit a lonely immortal dude looking for his place in the world.

I feel like you need a little known foreign actor, so that the mystery of the character is facilitated. If the actor is too well known, say like Ryan Reynolds, then the believe-ability of the mystery of the character is lost, and it ends up feeling like your best bud making a movie in his back yard.

I'd say Jonny Lee Miller as Connor MacLeod, Pierce Brosnan as Ramirez and Jude Law as Kurgan.

Brosnan would be my backup choice for Ramirez (actually Neeson would be my backup choice, but he pretty much played the exact character already in Kingdom of Heaven and the first half of Batman Begins), still I think it'd be kind of cool to have Ramirez go from being played by one iconic Bond actor to being played by another. I love Jude Law as an actor, I wish he had broken out in the states more as a leading man, but he definitely doesn't have the physically intimidating stature that Clancy

I'd envision someone more like Ray Stevenson, not some musclehead who can't act a la Jason Momoa, but still plenty intimidating.

Good point on Jude Law. I chose him because he was spectacular in Dom Hemingway as part good guy part bad guy. He could buff up a bit though.

Personally I feel like Thomas Jane looks close enough to Christopher Lambert that they could've continued Connor MacLeod (other than the fact that they killed off the character). I'm not sure I'm up for a reboot of this franchise. The TV series did a really good job of giving me the Highlander story I wanted, the movies kept contradicting themselves, which made it frustrating. So I guess in the sense of having a handful of movies that actually fit together, this would be good. I'd probably
