CAST THIS: Fantastic Four

Sep. 7, 2010by:

There have been a lot of casting and directing rumors swirling around the FANTASTIC FOUR reboot recently, so I figured I should jump on it before anything official gets announced.

James McTiegue, Joe Carnahan and David Yates are all being considered to helm the project, but no one is for sure yet, and there are some rumored casting options for Mr/Mrs. Fantastic (Adrien Brody/Alice Eve), but nothing too solid there either. But screw the talk, I want to hear who YOU want for the reboot.

I actually thought the original film was pretty well cast, except for Jessica Alba looking decades too young for Ioan Gruffudd, I appreciated him and Chris Evans and even Chiklis as Thing. It was the movie itself that was terrible, and I think the cast did the best they could with it.

It's unclear what the "tone" of this film is going to be, and if they want this to be the type of PG rated superhero movie the first two were (well the first was PG-13, but barely). I guess that would depend a lot of the director, and the way the studio wants to go with it.

Yes, this is a group casting session, so vote for all four members of the team. I know the Thing is going to be CGI, but he still needs a voice.

Last Week: EXPENDABLES 2

This was a lot of fun. We did a bit of fantasy casting to see who you thought Stallone should recruit for the Expendables sequel, and you certainly had a lot to say. Instead of the usual percentages, here are the most requested actors from the survey:

1. Jean-Claude Van Damme 2.The Rock 3. Kurt Russell 4. Steven Seagal 5. Sigourney Weaver 6. Chuck Norris 7. Milla Jovovich 8. Michael Biehn 9. Danny Trejo 10. Wesley Snipes 11. Lucy Lawless 12. Michael Jai White

Glad to see you guys thought there needed to be a few females in there, as I totally agree that Stallone needs a few fearsome ladies in the mix. I agree with almost everyone here, and I would only really add Tony Jaa to this list, but I think he's quit acting and is now a monk in the forests of Thailand now or something.

Alright, who should make up the new Fantastic Four?

Extra Tidbit: I'm getting Adrien Brody fatigue.

Maybe they'll cast people who should be cast this time.

Sue Storm - Naomi Watts (or Elizabeth Banks..)
Mr. Fantastic - George Clooney
Torch - No idea. I was cool with Chris Evans.
Thing - Bruce Willis would be cool, but the idea of Idris Elba is kind of awesome.

My thoughts

Reed Richards: George Clooney or Jon Hamm - Clooney needs to erase our collective memories of his Batman and hit us with a strong comic book role while he still can, think this one would be ideal for him. Hamm on the other hand needs a breakthrough leading film role and can see him comfortably pulling this one off.

Sue Storm: Elizabeth Banks or Elizabeth Mitchell - Both great actresses but shouldn't be majorly pricey for the studio. Mitchell could do with a (decent) film role (her last flick

Sue Storm: Elizabeth Banks or Elizabeth Mitchell - Both great actresses but shouldn't be majorly pricey for the studio. Mitchell could do with a (decent) film role (her last flick being the Santa Clause 3 according to imdb!) and Banks (originally called Mitchell bizarrely) it would be nice to see in a not entirely comedic role again.

Johnny Storm: Ryan Kwanten or Matthew Bomer - yes, they're both primarily known for TV work but I think both suited to the role. Chris Evans I think most people agree was one of the few good things about the original films and these guys could easily bring the same attributes to the role as him. They can pull off funny, cocky, womanizing and good looks whilst being charming enough to not come across as wholly arrogant.

Ben Grimm: I have literally no idea who to use for the voice of The Thing although presumably they'll need an actor for the before shots, no? I'd love to see Chris Bauer, Kwanten's True Blood co-star in the role just for the pre-existing chemistry between them although not sure he'd be considered big enough for the part...?

Victor Von Doom: again, not really sure of this one although I do not support the rumours of Stephen Moyer. I just cannot see Beeeyyll in this, not sure he's got the chops to play such a villain. The Oldman suggestion isn't a bad one although don't imagine it happening... Maybe Walton Goggins or Robert Knepper might be creepy enough to pull it off?

A final note, I wish the rights would revert back to Marvel before this reboot was undertaken. It would give more time between the initial incarnations and would be developed by people with passion and a depth of knowledge behind the characters. Not to mention it would allow for further future cross-pollination between Marvel characters on film - FF for Avengers 2 anyone...?!

Kristen Bell as Invisible Woman

She would look great in the costume, plays a smart girl convincingly (Veronica Mars), and has both comedic and dramatic acting skills, whichever the tone of the movie focuses on more. Plus, I think this might be a very fun role for her. I'm tired of the Hollywood comedies she's been in lately (I've hated everything post Veronica Mars) and I think this would be a step up from some of those movies.

Still don't understand why everyone was so down the first 2 FF. Not every movie has to be dark and push an R rating. Just think, if they made a third one, we wouldn't have to put up with Evans as captain america!

i'm down on the first 2 FF because they strayed too far from the source material especially with Dr Doom, generally the casting was terrible except Chris Evans. The Thing was too short and too rubbery. It wasn't funny, it wasn't thrilling or exciting or even well written. I could go on...and on.

I know they always seem to play bad guys but Gary Oldman or Ralph Fiennes would be amazing as Doom. Both excel at playing memorable crazy ass villains and thats the kind of Doom we need. Whats his face from the first two movies was terrible. He wasn't threatening at all and if I saw that green robed moron and heard him talk Id piss myself laughing at him.

I want an old school, bad ass Eastern European menace who truly is Reed's rival. That being said, let's get Christoph Waltz to step into the armor and mask!

Naomi Watts - Sue Storm,
Idris Elba - Ben Grimm,

all but johnny

I've thought about this a lot. a lot. Cloony (when he was in his prime) as Fantastic. Elizabeth Banks as Invisible Woman, A mix of CG/Costume ( a la "where the wild things are") voiced by John "bender" Dimagio for the Thing and for the human torch.... i dont know... thats hard. i liked chris evans a lot. he was the one good thing of the two horrible movies. Maybe donald glover? idk, he's snarky enough. I cant think of anyone else... hmm

Hmm... good suggestions guys...

Elizabeth Banks is a solid choice for SUe Storm, especially if Franklin is brought into the mix. However, if this is an Ultimates reboot, Kristen Bell is also a great choice.
I really do like Adrien Brody (although only Marvel would have the chops to bring him in, given their quality in character actors so far) and if they went younger, Jake Gyllenhal would be pretty good too. He looks young enough at the very least.
Johnny Storm is probably the hardest to cast, but I say let Bradley Cooper

Johnny Storm is probably the hardest to cast, but I say let Bradley Cooper take the reigns if its the regular cast, and if its a younger cast I can deal with Justin Timberlake.
Finally, Ben Grimm... I'd love to see Bruce Willis take the character if they never show Ben before the accident. If not, then go with someone convincing. I really have no ideas though, except MAYBE Jason Statham. He'd have to try and get rid of the cockney accent and make it more Brooklyn, but aside from that he's gruff enough for the job. I have no ideas as far as a younger guy though. Think of the football players in Friday Night Lights maybe (I don't watch the show, but there's probably a big guy in there who needs a break).
Also, I want to see Doom done right, but put him on the sidelines and bring in a new villain, maybe Baron Zemo. A classically trained actor would chew scenery like crazy with a character like that.

Watch yourself, Ravi. When I'm in charge, there won't be any room in this world for someone who can read a comic where a stretchy man fights a giant purple planet-eating dude from space and his shiny flying surfboard riding sidekick, and then say with a straight face that it isn't awesome.
