Cast This: Iron Fist

04.04.2014

Time to round out our Netflix casting with the living weapon, Iron First! Here are the previous castings: Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones

Last, but certainly not least, we have Danny Rand AKA Iron Fist. This is a character I figured would already have made an appearance in the flesh either on the big or small screen. The character has taken several turns in his animated form whether it’s been in video games or ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. They attempted to get a movie going for Iron Fist back in 2000 with Marvel still trying to get it rolling well into 2010. But finally, Netflix decided that the character was worthy of his own solo series.

Who would fit the role? I’ve seen several, more high profile suggestions like Charlie Hunnam and Ryan Gosling. I can tell you it likely won’t be either one of those guys. Hunnam seems to be the more popular choice of the two. I’d always thought that Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow on SMALLVILLE could be a contender. Rand is normally seen with sandy blonde hair, and is particularly fit due to his martial arts training. What about Gabriel Macht from SUITS? Or Drew Fuller from ARMY WIVES? Just to throw out some ideas. I decided to think small this time around. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone mentions Scott Adkins.

I wonder if they will go with the first run of Iron Fist, or pull the story from Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction’s Immortal Iron Fist storyline. I think that’s my biggest inquiry when it comes to any of these solo hero series. What are their ideas for each character? I also imagine that at some point they will cross over into each other’s shows. Have you noticed that all the characters share a common thread? Should get interesting as more details come in.

Get to casting!

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': Jessica Jones:

1.Rose Leslie 2. Eliza Dushku 3. Jewel Staite

You guys did a fantastic job casting Jessica Jones! Love the choices here! Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of these ladies. Personally, I think that Eliza Dushku and Jewel Staite are the best fit here. I love Leslie, and I believe the reason I don’t see her in this role has a lot to do with associating her with Ygritte from GAME OF THRONES. Anyway, I think you all have made some amazing choices with the Netflix casting! Can’t wait to see who comes up next!

Cast someone totally new

There is a guy named Jonny Blu, a white guy who is famous as a pop singer in China. He is also a skilled Kung Fu master and he speaks Chinese. Considering Danny Rand grew up speaking Chinese, this should be a major factor in the casting. There is a martial arts demo on youtube of him and a Iron Fist fan trailer if you look it up. This guy for sure gets my vote to play Iron Fist

Jack Gleeson

and for those of you wondering yes that's the actor who plays Joffrey Baratheon on Game of Thrones and before you write me off, hear me out, the problem of actors is once they do a well known role they are typecast and forever known as that character, let's give Jack 6 months to bulk up and really learn martial arts and make it an art as Iron Fist does and I say give him a shot, let's stop typecasting before it begins and personally I would love to see him play a hero.

I would say either Burn Gorman from Pacific Rim or Reuben Langdon.

Danny Rand is pretty much Tarzan, just replace the African jungle with a mystical Asian village. It's the fish out of water thing. You'd kill an entire aspect of the character if you cast an Asian character that's already from there.

I'm going with the great suggestion of Iko Uwais made previously.
The change in ethnicity benefits and matches the idea behind the character, the culture. Instead of the same old Great White Hope from the mid-20th Century.

Iko Uwais
now before you down vote me - This is a case where I think changing the comic book ethnicity makes sense. Iron Fist's back story/origin works better with an Asian actor playing him. And Iko kicks all sort of ass in the Raid movies.

Anyone who is an actual martial artist.

Keyword being artist. I mean Iron Fist is like the Jet Li of the marvel universe. It has to actually look like a fluid fight style. I think Ray Park if they go for a white guy or what about Jon Foo or Wu Jing if they go Asian?? They aren't big names but have proven themselves to be really great martial arts actors.

When the movie was greenlighted, it was, supposed to be Ray Park, and I thought that was a great idea... I still think so !
Or, indeed, Scott Adkins...
Anyway, I'd rather have a martial artist who CAN act, than an actor who MIGHT learn to pass for a martial artist...
Ho, my... I almost forgot all white skinned, with blond hair and blue eyes heroes HAVE to be black, nowadays... So I guess it's gonna be Michael Jay White !

Yeah, or if they're originally Asian characters, they MUST be adapted as white characters since - to appeal to an international audience - 'American' means white. Since, there are no OTHER people in America.

I agree with you.
The Dragon Ball debacle being the most obvious example, with The Last Airbender...
Thanks God(s), the fucking Akira bullshitt never got to the screen.
