Cast This: Lex Luthor

Aug. 18, 2013by: Niki Stephens

You had to know it was coming...time to cast Lex Luthor!

Out of all the "Cast This" columns I've done so far, this has to be the one that I've been anticipating the most. We did one a few years ago, but I think you guys will have better suggestions this time, not to mention the fact that this is potentially for the Superman/Batman movie. I know the talk of inspiration has come from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, but its sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again is more Luthor-centric. Are they possibly pulling from that material as well?

Let's talk people who have already played Lex in the flesh (the three major ones): Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Michael Rosenbaum. As much as I love Hackman, be honest with yourselves, his version of the character was over the top and cheesy. I don't think it was a complete fail just didn't fit the bill. Spacey was a nice choice. He certainly understands the character, though I think my biggest complaint was he often felt more comedic. Perhaps that was the writing more than the acting. Then there's Rosenbaum, who I've already said is hands down the best version I've seen so far. He nails the character to a T, and he was playing it much younger. Now at 41, I think that Rosenbaum would be a great pick. But would it confuse fans of SMALLVILLE? Would it disrupt the timeline? Does anyone care?

Aside from Rosenbaum, Spacey is the closest we've gotten to an ideal Lex Luthor, but what do we need in a potential candidate? What does he need to have? Obviously he'd need to look great bald, then there's the charisma, the cold uncaring side, someone very well spoken, and most important, someone we can take seriously. Feel free to add more. What I think filmmakers fail to realize with Lex is that he doesn't care about anything or anyone. He wants everyone to know that he is a gift given from God and that they should know that as the quiver in fear. What's interesting is that unlike the Joker, Luthor is just an ordinary guy, okay he's super intelligent but still ordinary. He's that prick you pass in a suit that would rather spit on a homeless person than give them change.

Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston have both been rumored for this role, and recently Cranston said he'd be down for the opportunity. I think it's your turn to decide. Can you do any better?

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': BATMAN (for BATMAN/SUPERMAN)

1. Karl Urban 2. Jon Hamm 3. Anson Mount

Wow. Let me tell you, no one else stood a chance again Karl Urban. Once the votes started rolling in they didn't stop. I think all three choices have potential. Urban has that dark, brooding thing and I think that his Batman would be more reminiscent of Keaton's version. Next was Jon Hamm who just looks the part to me. That's not all he's got going for him but I just see him and think "Bruce Wayne". Last up is Mount who you all really rallied for. I have yet to see him in HELL ON WHELLS though I recently added it to my Netflix queue after all the glowing reviews. Oh, and of course the idea of bringing back Keaton sounds f*cking awesome but I really doubt that's going to happen.

thats right!
He looked awesome in Iron Man 3.... Now shave his head
He Played Henry Cavill's fake father in Count Of Monte Cristo and Jim Caviesel played his real Father Edmond Dantes aka The Count Of Monte Cristo....thats why Jim Caviesel would be an interewsting choice as Batman.. Reunite the cast dag namit...and while at it.....your at it....the chick who played his girlfriend (Dagmara Dominczyk) should be Wonder Woman...but she need to get in shape again.

Bryan Cranston should be

Bryan Cranston should be Commissioner Gordon...not Lex

Mark strong is Good too.....it does not matter that he is Sinestro....because Sinestro is red skinned and a different person...he can play Dual Roles
Or just get Stanley Tucci to be Lex

Aquaman: Paul Walker
Joker: Steve Bulcemi
Green Lantern: Ryan Reynolds (don't ruin the freakin continuity......if the movie bombed it was not his fault....even though I hate Ryans guts....he did good in Green Lantern....just eliminate the freakin comedy....not every character has to be funny)

Shazam: The Rock
Billy Batson ( the kid who turns into Shazam) : Ben Affleck

Elias Koteas

Is my dream choice for the past decade.
But a more likely possibility in a "Zack Snyder casting someone you didn't thought of" kind of way that would still make me happy would be George Clooney.
Luthor has to be sleazy, charming and only evil "between the lines". Clooney is due for a villain role.

Terry O' Quinn Gets My Vote.

TarantinoDork said Tom Cruise below and I think that would be a surprisingly perfect choice, but I'm going to have to put Terry O' Quinn's name in the box. If you've seen him on LOST you know that he has the ability to be the warmest, nicest guy in one scene, then just flip the script and turn into a cold, calculative psycho in the next. Best part about it is his "wolf in sheep's clothing" persona. Very mild-mannered charm with a pair of "I could kill you right now" eyes. THAT'S Lex Luthor!

Ben Affleck

Always thought he'd be perfect for the role. Especially after I saw him in "State of Play" (which is a really underrated movie BTW). His new movie "Runner, Runner" looks like it's up a similar alley to how I would like to see Lex protrayed as well and he's really matured well as an actor in my mind over the last half decade or so. Just the perfect fit IMO.

Dug this up as well for those questioning the look, he can make it work:

Mark Strong is a badass too though. Also on my list of possibles: Daniel Day Lewis, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Stephen Dillane, Luke Evans, Viggo Mortensen (who I wanted for Zod originally) and Sean-fucking-Bean.

Mark Strong or Billy Zane FTW. Cranston SHOULD play James Gordon again. I know he voiced him in "Batman: Year One" but as Walter White (in the previous "Breaking Bad" seasons), he hands down looks like Gordon next to Gary Oldman.

Some not obvious choices

Denzel Washington - Come on, that alone would sell an additional 100M on the box office
Hugo Weaving - I think he can pull it off and make the roll iconic
Billy Zane - Has the look, and just basing it on his Titanic performane he would be good. Not a big name thought

Strong needs to remain Sinestro

If it were down between Brain Cranston and Mark Strong, I'd go with Cranston because he hasn't been in a DC movie as of yet and he would likely steal every scene he's in. If they decide to go for someone a bit younger, I wouldn't mind Tom Hardy or Patrick Wilson.

I didn't see anyone who suggested Woody which is a shame, bc he has the ability to do it, but of the ppl everyone mentioned, I love Tom cruise, I think Michael chilklis would be good, and Leo would also be fantastic (he loves to yell). Also, on screen right now for the first movie, I don't think lex has to be bald, now do I care

Lex

I guess there's a bit different versions of lex, but I watched the animated all-star superman and love him. In that he's not evil, though he's done terrible things. I think he would be the superhero if superman didnt arrive, and he hates superman, bc he's basically cheating bc he actually isn't human. Of course he also has a huge ego which is why he still won't be a good guy, but the filmmakers need to go that route - that Lex starts hating Supes bc Metropolis was HIS town, and supes comes in

Cranston Vs. Strong

I like Brain Cranston but him being bald, might remind too many fans of Breaking Bad., not that he wouldnt be a great Lex Luthor....so if I had another pick..I'd would go with Mark Strong..he also would bring alot to the character of Lex. (I definitely like Spacey and Hackman's versions and Michael Rosenbaum did great in Smallville)

Think about these choices, really think about them, before you thumb me down anyway. But Rob Lowe or Eric Bana, in my opinion, would be great. Lowe would have the charm with the nutcase boiling underneath & Bana on the other hand would give a strong battle ready vibe. Think about it.

A Hollywood good guy

With the direction that the Man of Steel 2 (I refuse to call it Batman vs Superman - that shit is ridiculous) is seemingly going, Luthor is most likely going to paint himself as the human savior that rebuilt the destruction of a meddling alien. It is conceivable that he has to, at least partially, dupe Batman into buying that Superman is a threat. So you need someone charming, that you would believe the audience would root for in other circumstances. Strong is a great actor, but he is always

It is conceivable that he has to, at least partially, dupe Batman into buying that Superman is a threat. So you need someone charming, that you would believe the audience would root for in other circumstances. Strong is a great actor, but he is always typecast as the bad guy, I would like them to go a different direction. In addition, Luthor's race has changed in many iterations of the mythos so that kind of leaves that avenue open as well.

My vote, and I know it is a shot in the dark, is Denzel Washington. The guy has been a leading man for years, he has played some amazing bad guys, but mostly has played charming, heroic, if intimidating characters. And with this series already landing heavyweights like Crowe and Shannon, I think it could have the stones to at least try it. Outside of that, I think another solid choice could be Matt Damon. Another charming lead man, who people often root for that would give the character the acting range needed. And my darkhorse candidate: Jeffery Wright. The guy is amazing, does not get enough work, and while not the typical good guy that I point to above, I think would be awesome enough in the role to make up for it.

I'm a Smallville fan

The moment Michael Rossenbaum uttered the line. "I'm the villan of this story.", I was sold on him as Lex Luthor. That being said Lex Luthor is intelligent, sophisticated and thinks everyone else is beneath him. That sounds a lot like Edward Norton to me and I think he would own it. My only other pick would be Adrien Brody. He can speak quietly and his words still carry weight.

I'm going with the LOST cast

Mathew Fox would be my top pick. He can be classy, menacing and would have presence if he went head to head with Cavill. And he's gone bald before so I don't see any problem with Fox.

Terry O' Quinn would be another pick but he wouldn't have the voice that Lex ultimately needs. And I think Fox would have the more demanding voice. Fox needs a blockbuster under his name, the least he deserves.

DEXTER proved he has the range to be both menacing and sympathetic. Shave his head, buff him up and you'd have a killer Lex Luthor. Pun not intended . . . ah, who the f**k am I kidding? Pun SO intended! ;)

Mark Strong would be a great Lex Luthor but I'd actually like to see him as Dr. Strange, or something similar.

If he wasn't already Hector Hammond, Peter Sarsgaard. I think the guy has an ability to play both shifty and sinister and strangely charming, which I feel Lex Luthor should be. You don't want someone who's outright evil and cackling; he needs to demonise Superman and sway the public to his side and be something of a manipulator. He would also be a good contrast, from a physical standpoint, to Henry Cavill. Arnold Vosloo has also been suggested elsewhere on the web, and he'd be cool - but he'd

Agreed, however this will be the billionaire Lex, which we haven't seen on the big screen yet, and he is Superman's main antagonist- betting there'll be a second villain like Brainiac or Bizarro as well.

Nicholas Campbell (Da Vinci's Inquest) would be my first choice. Sam Neill would be a close second. Jason Isaacs is a great third option, as someone else mentioned.

Ben Foster or Michael Eklund

I really think Ben Foster could pull it off or for anyone who's seen The Divide Michael Eklund. Definitely Michael Eklund

John Bernthal.
But I do like the idea of Tom Cruise. Great suggestion. Nice thinking outside of the casting vacuum.

Billy Zane!

C'mon, he looks just like cartoon Luthor!
I also kinda like Bryan Cranston, although I think he's a little too old. We all know that he can be super charming and then flip the switch into crazy mode, so I'm certain he can handle the part.

But seriously, Google Billy Zane and tell me I'm wrong.

Rosenbaum FTW

The guy freaking nailed Luthor and he spent 7 years slowly bringing the character into darkness. I don't think it would confuse anyone that matters and there were already so many nods to Smallville in Man of Steel I feel like this is the natural next step.

'Man of Steel' made Perry White black and Jimmy Olsen into Jenny Olsen. So yeah, if the best actor for the job ends up being Denzel Washington or Forest Whitaker or someone...I'm all for it. But if Luthor's ethnicity can be changed, then so too should the casting call for Batman be expanded beyond just 6'4" white guys. Because it would be really fucked up if only the villains have equal opportunity casting.

What I'd most want is an original take on the character and an actor good enough

Really, you sure about Jenny Olsen ? Look again... She's NEVER mentioned as 'Olsen' (even in the end credits), only 'Jenny'... All references were removed from the final cut (don't you think it's strange that Perry, who almost died for her, don't even bother to introduce her to Clark, in the end ?).

Other than that, Rosenbaum, Brown, or Cranston.

I will never suggest this actor for anything else

Tom Cruise.

Yep. You fuckin' heard me. Especially if they're going with the CEO/President Luthor. A guy who can smile at voters & shareholders one second, then flip the fuck out over the handsome alien stealing his headlines the next. And ultimately...an actor who can present a believable physical threat to Superman if he dons the Warsuit or merges with Metallo, Parasite, or Brainiac in the third act. That guy he played in Magnolia? Let him be that, and have it be Kryptonians instead of

I'm the opposite of a Tom Cruise fanboy. His inability to sincerely smile at anybody turns me off in most movies he's made in the last 20 years. I've only recently been able to tolerate him in the last couple Mission Impossible flicks. But what he does well...glaring, flipping out, having disturbingly perfect teeth, and doing his own stunts...make him the perfect big-name actor for Luthor in an action-heavy Superman movie.

Warner Brothers shilled out mega money to get Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner and Amy Adams among others for Man of Steel. So its obvious they're putting emphasis on big names in the supporting roles. So dip into the coffers to get Cruise to be Luthor.

I like the idea of Corey Stoll. Relatively unknown, terrific actor, he'd dwarf Henry Cavill, but that might not even be a bad thing. Plus, he just LOOKS like Lex Luthor. It might suit them to pick someone with more name-recognition, and it's not necessary that the actor already be bald. I don't pretend to know what they have in mind anymore with this franchise. I wish they were holding off on introducing Batman (we need to know Supes can handle things on his own now that he's been introduced to

Agreed. I'm a DC Guy all the way but I feel like Marvel would have done an amazing job with a Man of Steel Sequel. We could have had Steel and Supergirl introduced with Bizarro as a villain to go with Lex Luthor. They would have created a larger Superman cinematic world. Instead, it's back to being all about Justice League.

Michael Rooker is the living embodiment of Lex Luthor

Michael Rooker could stand in front of Superman and not give a damn about his powers. He has an awesome physical presence and he owns every scene he's ever been in. Rooker can also be very sinister when its called for. Lex hates Superman because he isn't human. He is prejudice for lack of a better word. We've all seen this side of Rooker on the Walking Dead, and he plays it devilishly well. There is no one better.

Michael C Hall

I think the guy would be a perfect for Luthor, but he is already "Sinestro" in Green Lantern. i know that movie was a big time fail, but it happened. The franchise is still salvageable to transition over to the current DC-Universe. Keeping Strong in the Sinestro role and putting him in the Justice League movie would be best for that.

I'm thinking Michael C Hall for Luthor

i can also imagine in the role, Michael Fassbender, Jude Law, and the ever popular Nicholas Cage

I have four answers to this...

1. Of the previous Luthor's, whilst I'm certain none of them should return, IF one of them did I'm genuinely torn between Spacey and Rosenbaum. I've always thought Spacey was the perfect choice, just in a weak film... but bringing him from one Superman movie to the next, it might just be too jarring for the audience. Rosenbaum was brilliant in Smallville, and tbh, I think it would be less jarring for audiences in the cross from TV to film - so I guess, by power of deduction - I'd give Michael

2. of those currently 'rumoured' then I'd go, hands down, with Mark Strong.

3. If I wanted to throw in some of my own 'options'... he's normally linked to 'heroes', but I reckon Nathan Fillion could fill the role. I'm quiet a Paul Bettany fan too, and could see him in the white suit. I've even toyed with something... and I can sense the barrage of 'thumbs down' but I really could see Tom Cruise in the role. Call me crazy if you will, but I could see him as the 'people person', the public loving him - him well on the way to the white house - but with Supes and Bats knowing the dark side. It sort of works. I'd like to see it!

but...

4. ultimately i'd go with MARK STRONG. I'd be excited to see him opposite Henry Cavill and (please god) Karl Urban.

One Choice

Corey Stall! I'm shocked I haven't seen it yet. Not only does he look the part, but he played a politician in House of Cards to perfection and Luthor was always a political figure. He has the demeanor and acting skills to go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill's Superman.

First of all, Jon HAmm is TOTALLY leading man material. In fact he's a leading man already on the small screen. Second of all, he did a Funny or Die a few years ago as Lex Luthor, which is, I imagine, why he's being thrown around now.

The best Luthor....

Was the one portrayed in the Justice League cartoon series. I don't know who the actor was, but he had that voice down PERFECTLY!!! His Lex was a completely egomaniac who was the smartest man on the planet, and believed that placed him above everyone else. Unlike Rosenbaum's version, it made no apologies and attempted no explanation of Lex's character. He wasn't conflicted, and he didn't care about who liked him. He hated Superman because he considered him a threat to humanity (a being who

Obviously it was a cartoon (and had dozens of episodes to explore Lex's personality), but whoever they hire should be forced to sit through all those episodes as a form of research because that portrayal was VASTLY better than anything we've seen up to now on the big or small screen.

One should not forget that before John Byrne rebooted Superman in 1986, Lex Luthor was a very different villain and Gene Hackman played him like just like the typical comicbook villain he was at the time.

While I love Cranston, his role as Jim Gordon, while it was only a voice over, was perfect. I'd like to see him reprise that role.

I can see Strong as a good Lex, but the whole being Sinestro ruins it don't you think? Also, I think Karl Urban would be an awesome Batman. I also, thought Jon Hamm would've been an amazing Superman, but Cavil is doing pretty well there.
