Cast This: Lobo

Apr. 27, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Time to head back to the comics to find our next "Cast This" subject.

After the LOBO adaptation lost Guy Ritchie, I thought this thing was in the crapper. What studio would be ballsy enough to do this? What director would do it justice? Warner Bros. held the property, but the only thing they could manage is slapping a PG-13 on it, and will probably later add that it was a "hard PG-13". The studio recently hired Brad Peyton to direct the film. I'm all for giving someone a chance, but this guys last efforts were JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE. Maybe Peyton wants to move on from family films, however, trying to figure out who should direct this is not the topic at hand.

Lobo is a humorous, egotistical, arrogant, hard ass alien bounty hunter who is really only looking after himself. Let's face it, the guy's name is Khundian for "he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it." Hell, Lobo is constantly challenging Superman just so he can prove he's better. Not to mention, he was fired from the Justice League (on the animated series). He's the best kind of scumbag there is.

So, who will you choose? Jeffrey Dean Morgan? Tom Hardy, again? Screech? Get the frag to it and pick who you want to play Lobo.

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': Who should direct TERMINATOR 5?:

1. James Cameron 2. Duncan Jones 3. Brad Bird

There's no real surprise on this one. Of course you want Cameron to come back. Unfortunately, that's not happening so let's move on to your other choices. Duncan Jones was a big hit. After seeing something like SOURCE CODE and knowing this guy has a geekon for sci-fi, you could trust him with a film in this franchise. Brad Bird impressed viewers with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. You shouldn't have been. THE INCREDIBLES was worthy enough. Oh, and for the jokester who said my mom should direct-- she's not interested.

Extra Tidbit: Lobo vs. Mask. Also, I expect a comment from violentbuddha.

Benicio Del Toro

I am not sure Lobo should be muscular and bulky.... I know he should be crazy, wild, with kick ass humor. Somehow I think - Benicio Del Toro does the trick.
Alternate option - Javier Bardem

an actor in full make-up/cgi

Johnny Depp.

Watch Public Enemies to see him as a (convincing) tough guy and [Insert: any movie from the past 10years] to see him act campy as hell.

Has anyone here actually read Lobo?

You people do know he's supposed to be a parody of the 80s antiheroes right, specifically Wolverine. This calls for somebody built like a tank and has comedic chops. Only one man fits that bill: The Rock.

Built like the rock? Have you seen him lately. Duran's alright, but he's got this goofy inbred quality to him. Has he even had a starring role yet? I'm sure there's dude's more qualified than the rock, like the guy form the fanfilm for example, but you gotta take into account bankability and star power as well. Studios aren't going to take a chance on some c-lister.

I just meant that he is big and in shape, and get more in shape (like every other actor chosen for roles) if cast. Have you ever read Lobo? Lobo HAS a goofy inbred quality to him for sure. I don't see why I, the fan, need to take bank-ability into account. I am asked who should play Lobo and without a doubt Durant would depict the main man the best. And let's not pretend Durand would be the first non-A-lister ever cast in a lead role. It happens way more often than anyone is willing to say.

I love this column you guys, It's one of my favorites on this site but seriously if your not going to take the time to check that you hadn't already done a cast this on a character than whats the point of doing it at all?

Jeffery Dean Morgan.

my first thought was Jason Statham, but he's too classy and would look weird with hair. after reading throug the comments a little, i'd have to agree and go with the Comedian

Because nobody can be as sarcastic, egotistical, humorous, arrogant bad ass like he can be. And lets face it, this guy was born to become the next superstar.

And yes, I'm going with less thick & bulky and more lean mean way like Jackman's turned out.

You'd think there were only about 20 actors in Hollywood

Ron Perlman because he was HellBoy and smoked a cigar.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan coz he had a moustache and smoked a cigar in Watchmen.

The intensity is more important than the physical size.I'm really glad they are giving Lobo a chance, and I saw that the director did start his career by making some kind of scary genre film...I'm worried about the producers though.

I would say Jeffrey Dean Morgan or Ron Pearlman.

Although the Pearlman pick is largely influenced because he was Hellboy, and Lobo and Hellboy are a similar characters. But it is still good.

Hoping on the bandwagon

Momoa. Haven't really seen anything else he's been in, but Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones was one of the most badass characters I've seen in a long time.

NO

Like Ghost Rider, Jonah Hex and Green Lantern please avoid this project and concentrate on Superman films or Flash.
While not related to this topic directly I'm also not liking the idea of turning TV to film projects under comedy banner showing the lead stars always getting high or making nervous statements. Green Hornet and 21 Jump Street while truly enjoyable as comedies lacked the substance that made it interesting tv shows.
