CAST THIS: Spider-Man!

Jan. 12, 2010by:

Sony stunned the entertainment world yesterday when amidst rumors of delays and disagreements concerning SPIDER-MAN 4theyannounced theywere now planning to not only scrap the Raimi/Maguire project, but actually reboot it from scratch with a completely new director and cast. This is a move so drastic, its caused me to move up my Cast This column a whole TWO DAYS. Thats big folks.

I was on the fence about a fourth SPIDER-MAN to begin with, but my head is still spinning trying to comprehend this decision. The original film came out a mere seven years ago, which would make this the unofficial record for fastest reboot ever, and I liken it to someone rebooting THE MATRIX or LORD OF THE RINGS. Maybe in thirty years when youve run out of ideas, but seven? Are superhero movies really that much of a cash cow that studios are now reducing their turnover time to almost laughable proportions? It would appear the answer is yes, and now, we have a new SPIDER-MAN to cast.

Sony has stated that they want to bring the series back to its roots, i.e. whats usually the best part of any superhero movie, the origin story. They want a teenage Peter Parker coming to grips with newfound powers, which despite all that happening seven years ago in the first movie, their logic is presumably that technology has evolved to a point where they can now capture high school awkwardness on film with detail never previously thought possible.

Ive zero idea as to just how theyre planning on differentiating this from the first movie, and villain issues of the fourth film aside (Raimi wanted Vulture, the studio didn't), they should remember they DO in fact need a villain for this reboot as well. But well talk about that another day, right now were looking for a brand new, high school-aged Peter Parker. Previous suggestions like Jake Gyllenhaal are likely out due to the age restrictions, (though maybe if he lost 85lbs of muscle hes put on during PRINCE OF PERSIA) so now we need someone quite young, or at least someone who can pass for an awkward teen. And Im about to open the floor up to you, but first, another hero

Last Week: HAWKEYE

As evidenced by last weeks column, we are getting a bit low on superheroes to cast these days, hence the aforementioned ridiculous reboot weve just finished discussing. But Hawkeye is an Avenger, and we will see him onscreen some day. The results?

1. Jeremy Renner (15%) 2. Aaron Eckhart (12%) 3. Michael Fassbender (9%)

I wasnt terribly surprised that Jeremy Renner remained your guys number one choice for the role of Hawkeye, even though he denied such rumors last week. I still see him as Captain America though, no matter how much no one seems to be considering that these days.

Eckhart certainly has the superhero chin, but Im more intrigued by your selection of Michael Fassbender, as someone said he had a old timey swashbuckling look that could fit the character. I would definitely agree with that, but now that you mention it, I could probably see him better as Green Arrow.

Alright, enough with the minor heroes, time to get to a major one. Shout out those SPIDER-MAN suggestions!

Extra Tidbit: I'd laugh if Vulture ended up being the new villain anyway.

RESTART!!!

Logan Lerman from the Patriot is my choice, and as for reboots, Me a die hard treky, loved Star trek, It was awesome!!!! And Batman, I think we need apologies from Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney, for they did not play the Batman!

We need a Snarky, dweeb like the one we read about as we experienced adolescence; Tobey Maguire did not fail as miserably as did the batmen prior to Christian Bale, but he did not become the Spider-Man is one of the most popular and commercially

huge fan

i dig that a lot of ppl think gordon-levitt would be a good choice, i think he has a lot of unrecognized talent. and would be a good fill in for the seemingly perfect tobey, for spidey. im also down with yelchin stepping into spidey's shoes. .. does he have shoes?

Anton Yelchin seems to be the best choice at this point, unless they go with an unknown. Jesse Eisenberg, perhaps? Although he's a bit old. Maybe Aaron "Kick-ass" Johnson? Too ironic?

I can agree with people that I think Anton Yelchin would make a great Peter Parker but I'm interested to see if he would be able to build some muscle for the role. As MJ my one and only choice is Mary Elizabeth Winstead!

Sony wants Spiderman to be in high school. That pretty much means the actor playing him needs to be under 20 years old. I really hope Sony doesn't hire a 28 year old guy to play Peter Parker. Anyway, I guess my pick to play Peter would have to be Logan Lerman

As if rebooting wasn't enough of a bad idea, but going back to teen and high school origins? We already saw a movie about high school spider-man learning his powers. It isn't a reboot, it's a start over and it doesn't look promising in the least.

the only actor who can pull this off

As far as i can see, the only real choice for the new spiderman has to be the Dustin Diamond. He played Screech in Saved By The Bell, and has been gone from our screens for far too long. He has style, class, and the real gravitas needed for this role.

I say Joseph Gordon Levitt is the best choice. He can still play the college student and I hope that Sony and Marvel want to try to start getting away from the whole "Let me stop this robbery and, oops, I'm late for class" routine and perhaps start dealing with 'adult' Peter. He even looks a bit like Heath Ledger, to boot. Just watch him in 500 Days of Summer, Brick, and The Lookout and tell me it wouldn't be possible if necessary?

While I like most of the suggestions I'm reading...especially Gordon-Levitt or Gyllenhall, the problem is that they're too old to be playing a high school kid if Sony is looking to redo the origin story. As long as they don't pick someone like Zac Efron it's okay.

Wasn't John Malkovich suppose to be The Vulture at one point? That'd be cool though. As for Spider-Man, I don't have anyone pop up in mind. But if this is a 'reboot', is there any storyline that can make Spider-Man a bit grimmer than what Raimi has done in all 3 films? I mean, when they say 'reboot', I think of it in "Batman Begins" reboot way and it works for Batman. I doubt if it would work with Spider-Man.

Anton Yelchin as Spidey, Emma Stone as MJ (thought she should play her ever since I first saw her in Superbad), Judy Davis as Aunt May, David Morse as Norman Osbourne (if they want to use the Goblin again). The most important thing is they have to make Peter funny this time around! There were a few good comedic moments in the Raimi films, but for the most part Peter had such a dry personality. They need to go the Ultimate route with this one and show a Peter and Mary Jane who actually have FUN together, not just blather on about how much they love each other when they're not fighting. She needs to find out his identity early on and get all that crap outta the way. Let's bring in Captain Stacey and Gwen from the beginning and do them justice. Hell, I'd even like to see the goth Gwen from the Ultimate comics this time around. It would make her far more interesting Kat Dennings for Gwen and Bruce Greenwood for the Captain. Damn, sorry. I just realized how much I went on and the question was only who could play Peter Parker but yeah. Anton Yelchin, definitely.

ALL Good Choices, but I think...

Sam Raimi should use this as an opportunity to jump ship and join in with Paramount. They will ABSOLUTELY take Raimi's take...provided he give them a cameo from someone joining the Avengers to recruit him. Bring on Raimi and Paramount's Spider-Man 4 with The Lizard and The Vulture...introducing the woman who will become Black Cat somewhere in the middle.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Jim Parsons.

And if they're going to go back to high school I'd sujest they stay in high school and perhaps make it more like Ultimate Spiderman. Then just to mix things up. Have him actually with Gwen Stacy at the begining and put MJ on hold (Death of Gwen Stacy anyone). And since they have no pre-established goblin lore to follow, I'd say they should use Hobgoblin.

Definitely Anton Yelchin or Jesse Eisenberg...they both can pull off the loser side of Peter Parker but both have also proven themselves capable of handling action roles(Yelchin in Terminator, Eisenberg in Zombieland) Film the scenes pre-transformation earlier then give them time to bulk up for the spider-man role.

Jesse Eisenberg wouldn't be a stretch. If you've ever seen Cursed, most of the movie is about his character having superpowers who discovers their advantages in high school and learns to use them to his advantage. There's even a scene where he wrestles and defeats most of the team with his super strength and agility. It was very reminiscent of Spider-Man.

My pick is....

I would love to see Jensen Ackles get this but since they want a more High Schoolish look, then my vote is for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Joseph Gordon Levitt or Emile Hirsch

Joseph Gordon Levitt or Emile Hirsch would be great for the role. If I had to choose one....hmm... Maybe Hirsch?

It's a shame they can't ever get this shit right the first time. When can we expect to see the next Incredible Hulk origin story reboot? It's only been a few years since the last one.

Gordon-Levitt would be an excellent choice, but he's getting too old to play a high school kid. Right now I'm feelin' Anton Yelchin as Parker, Emma Stone as Mary Jane.

I'm amazed no one has suggested it but I'd go with Emile Hirsch for Peter Parker. He can pull off teenage or early 20s spidey. He's got the look and the attitude for it. I also like the idea of the kid from Percy Jackson as spidey if they go the high school route which I think is stupid. They should just take the lead of the Incredible Hulk and disown the original and throw the origin into the first ten minutes, don't drag it out for a whole movie.

they want a teen.. which mean basically, which cast member of TWILIGHT will be the new Spider Man?? I hope they don't screw the pooch on this one, but that is what these studios do, fuck everything up. Its what happened with number 3

Make it happen or no reboot.

Tobey to me, is the only Spiderman! i would rather they make a Spidergirl movie than rebooting the whole damn thing! but if i had to cast someone has the new Peter Parker, i think Jessie Eisnborg (Zombieland)

1st off, what the eff is with everyone thinking Peter Parker should be played by Anton Yelchin or Jesse Eisenberg. There is no way in hell they can pull of this character. Plus they play too much like p*ssys on screen. And thats one thing i dont want them to do with Peter Parker again. Honestly, it should be someone like Sean Faris or Zac Efron. It would make the most sense. Plus this "highschool" thing is really stupid. This aint Twilight b*tches!

he needs to , needs to, needs to, be peter parker to hell with the high school stuff, just have it pick up when 2 left off, 3 never happened. as long as mary jane is smokin hot and looks way out of peters league i dont care who they pick.

What I would really like to see is James Cameron take this opportunity to finally do HIS version of Spider-man that he was long ago denied. Very few of his ideas still exist in first movie (for the record, I truly did enjoy the first and second, do not get me wrong), but if Cameron were still interested and had the time, I would happily see what he would bring to the table. As for the re-cast of Spider-man, while this is now redundant, I would still rather Maguire. But such is the case that

But such is the case that neither he or Raimi will be returning, if this idea is proposing taking Peter back to his roots, I think Anton Yelchin has a fighting chance for the role. The fella is talented and he has proven that he can carry a good role when given the opportunity.

Villains wise, I would love to see The Lizard.

I'd go with Jeremy Sumpter as a teenage Peter Parker. He can definitely play the awkward/good-hearted nerd, just dye his hair darker and he'll be great as the adolescent webslinger.

It'll probably be Zac Efron or Drake Bell or Jason Earles. All Disney kids, but with Disney owning Marvel now...But yeah, that gordon levitt kid would be good too.

Im digging people saying Joseph Gordon Levitt. I also think James Mcavoy would be a good choice. I always thought Jake Gyllenhall but Im thinking now he wouldnt be a good choice but back when they first did the movies he wouldve been great. For Mary Jane: Emily Blunt

I like to see Jake Gyllenhaal or Joseph Gordon-Levitt play Spider-Man. If I had to pick only one, however, I'd choose Gyllenhaal.

And I think Emily Blunt or Evan Rachel Wood should play Mary Jane.

My casting choices

As much as I hate this noise about reboot, it does offer a fresh new start of possibilities: Peter meeting Gwen first, more time to flesh out characters, less camp, perhaps finally a geeky, socially-awkward teen turned wisecracking super-stud, etc.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man - Jesse Eisenberg or Cory Monteith from "GLEE." If older Levitt or Elijah Wood.

Mary Jane Watson- Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Harry Osborne- Emile Hirsch

Norman Osborne/Green Goblin- William Fichtner or Daniel-Day

Harry Osborne- Emile Hirsch

Norman Osborne/Green Goblin- William Fichtner or Daniel-Day Lewis

Adrian Toomes/Vulture- Ben Kingsley or John Malkovich

Aunt May- Helen Mirren

Uncle Ben- James Garner or Ed Asner

Robbie Robinson- Ernie Hudson

J.Jonah James - J.K. MUST STAY! DO NOT RECAST HIM! But if they must...someone suggested Stephen Lang on superherohype.com but to me he's Cable. I could see him as J.J. barking out orders and making the role his.

Kraven the Hunter- Gerard Butler

Flash Thompson- Travis Van Winkle or Mark Salling from "GLEE."

Gwen Stacy- Amber Heard or Emma Stone

Dr. Otto Octavius/ Doc Ock- Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Dr. Curt Connors/ The Lizard- Hugh Laurie

Wilson Fisk/Kingpin- James Gandolfini

Cletus Kassidy/Carnage- Robert Knepper, Jackie Earle-Haley, or Jake Busey

Mysterio- Mark Strong (After seeing him as Lord Blackwood in "Sherlock Holmes" I thought his voice would be perfect either for Mysterio or as Dr. Doom in a "Fantastic Four" reboot.)

Alex O'Hirn/Rhino- It's left-field casting but Patrick Warburton has made a living playing muscular dimwits. 'Prison Break's' Wade Williamswouldn't be bad either.

Flint Marko/Sandman- Henry Rollins or Dominic Purcell

Electro- It depends on which version they'd go with.

Venom- Ultimate or McFarlane version? That is the question.
