Cast This: Spider-Man!

02.12.2015

Hold up, Marvel and Sony struck a deal to get Spider-Man to kick butt alongside the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? You don’t say! Hell has frozen over, and that’s why we are here.

My Spidey sense tells me that you guys have been turning those gears trying to come up with a new actor to play the role of Peter Parker. With Sony stating that they aim to go back to the days of a younger Peter while not rehashing an origin story, one has to wonder who you can drop in that will have instant appeal and a persona that just says, “That guy is a great Spider-Man.” If Andrew Garfield is too old at 31 years of age, then how far do we need to take this thing? Early twenties? If we want to get technical, Peter was fifteen when he was bit by that wandering radioactive spider. Do they want someone that young? If they plan to bring Spidey into CIVIL WAR, he’s already married to Mary Jane so he’s well past being a youngster (if they follow the story directly).

According to the rumor of the day, the studio is looking to both Logan Lerman (FURY, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) and Dylan O’Brien (THE MAZE RUNNER, TEEN WOLF) to play the web head. Both actors are 23 years old which puts us at an early twenties Spidey, if the scoop is true. Does this mean we have to give up hope that Donald Glover will get the opportunity to slip the costume on? While I was doing some research, I noticed that quite a few people are still lobbying for Garfield to come back. I don’t know if you’d believe me, but I even saw some people wishing for the return of Tobey Maguire.

Since most of us are more than familiar with the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, I thought I’d take the conversation to the virtual streets to get some opinions from the movie fans on who they were looking to cast:

”I think Ben Barnes would work. He’s age appropriate and in pretty good shape. Also, Kodi Smit-McPhee could be good also.” –Eric W.

I vote for Logan Lerman. He’s the right age for a “young” Spider-Man. I originally wasn’t sold on this kid as an actor, but his performance in FURY won me over. He’s got the looks and the talent. I totally can see him in the role. He’ll need to buff up, but that won’t be a problem.” – Michael G.

Dylan O’Brien is my pick. He’s got the charm, humor and the look of what I think Spidey would be nowadays.” – Nino C.

”I think they should skip Parker and go straight to Miles Morales. Is Donald Glover too old now to play Spider-Man?” –Elford A.

If we go the Morales route, what about two great up and comers like Shameik Moore (DOPE) or RJ Cycler (ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL)? They both fit the age criteria and definitely have the talent. No matter what, I look forward to the upcoming developments. It's just exciting overall that Spidey is back where he belongs.

Let's hear it! Who do you want to play the next SPIDER-MAN??

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': The Vampire Lestat:

1. Tom Cruise 2. Tom Hiddleston 3. Cillian Murphy

So we stick with Tom then, aye? I for one would be all for him reprising the role. I alsoam super into your second pick with Tom Hiddleston. That makes me feel all sorts of feels. Cillian was a choice I didn't really think of, but I like the idea of him taking that on. The strong silent type turned into a quick witted brat prince- works for me!

If they're going high school Logan Lerman is ideal IMO (although am sick of high school Spider-Man at this point), if they're gonna be faithful to the Civil War comic with an old Spider-Man, bring back Tobey Maguire.

How about Zac Efron? He's got the looks for it.. and he's been funny in several movies lately. Besides that he's had a few "better" roles in movies like the paperboy, charlie st cloud, ...
I think he could pull it off.

Nick Robinson.
it also doesn't hurt his chances that he is in Jurassic World with Chris Pratt and Tye Simpkins (Iron Man 3)

Check it

Emile Hirsch for sure. Also a fan of Logan Lerman.
What do you think about Daniel Radcliffe?
He's probably too old, but JGL would make a good Parker. Huh? Huh?

Jack O'Connell.
He is the only young actor out there that I can picture going toe to toe with the rest of the Avengers cast.

Well if they are supposedly gonna make the Winter Soldier the next Captain America & end up killing off Rogers, then why can't they do the same thing after the Infinity War movies end. Then you can bring in Morales, but I still feel Parker is Spider-Man & it's who non comic fans are familiar with. As far as casting the new Spider-Man, I am starting to lean towards Logan Lerman, he has the better teenage look & can certainly bulk up if needed.

No Miles, only Parker

My choices would be:
- Dave Franco;
- Dylan O達rien; or
- Asa Butterfield

Oh and Alexandra Daddario all red-headed for MJ!

Put some mystery back into the MCU...

Have the actor be revealed when he unmasks in "Civil War", a tall order in the leak culture we live in now. But with the d*ck measuring contest that had been going on between WB and Disney with release dates for hero flicks, the sense of spontanaeity in the MCU was kinda sapped. Doing that would shock everyone.

Hayden Christensen

Just kidding... How about just an American actor to play an American icon. Black, white orange I don't care as long as he takes pride in the role and doesn't look like a twig in a leotard.

Either Logan Lerman. .

Or cast an unknown. Plenty of young up and comers who I'm sure could use this break/do great. This Morales debate seems silly. Granted, I'm not too familiar with the character, but doesn't seem likely route the studio will take. And I don't have anything specific against Donald Glover... but never saw him in a role like this, never particularly wanted to

Peter Parker- Dylan O'brien

I wasn't up for O'Brien at first b/c I didn't want to get attached to one actor without looking at the field. Sometimes the initial suggestions or rumors have a way of narrowing the focus away from potential candidates that make more sense. However, I've decided that O'Brien has Peter Parker's look and the right physique to sell the man in the suit. Here are a couple more suggestions, some of which are overstated:
- Taron Egerton
- Logan Lerman
- Anton Yelchin
- Dave Franco
- Ryan Gosling

Dylan O' Brien/Peter Parker

Dylan O'Brien has the look, the chops, and the build. He is not the most well known actor but I think that's what they need at this point. He is known for his role on Teen Wolf and The Maze Runner. He has the confidence and charisma to portray a great Spider-Man. As for direction of the film I would like to see Raimi come back as a consultant at the least and like to see a more established ( not necessarily older) Spider-Man, maybe right after graduation or beginning of his college years.

Morales

It seems very odd to me that people are locked into a mindset where Spiderman would need to be Morales to be played by a person of color. The studio isn't going to do a Morales movie, because they seek to reboot the Peter Parker line with the proper tone and right actor (which Marvel tends to get) hopefully just jumping into a Spiderman movie because: (1) we all know Spiderman; and (2) too many origin reboots. It Marvel isn't going to do Dr. Strange as a classic origin movie, I'd bet

But, if they want to cast Glover or Dev Patel as Peter Parker because he's the best fit for what they want to do with Parker ... do it.

Peter Parker/ Leave Morales for future movies.

I've never been great at casting but my only thought is to leave Morales until future Spiderman movies. I have no problem with him being Spiderman but i feel like if you're going to FINALLY do Spiderman right, you need to stick with Peter Parker. I always have coined Spiderman into the pantheon of heroes who do not need to be rebooted over and over again. Pop-Cuture has pretty much solidified who characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Batman, Superman, and Spiderman are as characters. You

That being said, if they were to go the Miles Morales route, you'd be ignoring the original Peter Parker who inspired Miles. You're better off creating a 2 minute monologue at the beginning of the movie or during a cameo to set up Parker as a character. Also, it gives studios to set up future Spiderman films much in the way that Captain America could be setting up Bucky Barnes as Captain America.

About Hutcherson...

He would be good mainly for one purpose. If they were to do the Civil War unmasking as a way to reveal who's playing him, Hutcherson has the most recognition out of everyone in the Spidey casting pool to give the unmasking its wow factor.

With Dylan/Logan, the response would be: "Oh, that's that kid from Maze Runner/Percy Jackson/whatever movie I've seen him in."

With Josh, the response would be: "Aw snap, Peeta from Hunger Games is Spidey!!"

Logan Lerman - Fury was amazing

Logan has the acting chops to pull it off. He can be funny in very dark moments. He has that Peter Parker look and I think he would work well with RDJ, Chris Evans and all those guys. He could learn a lot, like he learned working for Brad Pitt.

I don't really want to see Spider-Man rebooted. Not because I love Mark Webb's version, but I'm just a little sick of the character getting the reboot treatment AGAIN. Having said that, Logan Lerman has proven himself lately. If we're going with Peter Parker. Dylan O'Brien's not a bad choice, either, but I've only seen him in The Maze Runner.

Kinda have no choice at this point & they actually don't have to go with a full reboot with another tiresome origin story. Spider-Man is to Marvel, what Batman is to DC, he is the most popular one, just be glad he is finally in the MCU where he belongs.

I liked Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

I thought they should have kept him on. However, failing that, I would say Taron Egerton's performance in KINGSMAN makes him the best candidate for the role. The guy's clearly ready for prime time; get him now before his price goes up.

Josh Hutcherson is also a solid choice. I know a lot of people find him bland, but he brings a lot to the table. His audition the last time was really good.

As for Peter Parker/Mies Morales, there's no way they can pack in yet another origins tale

Dylan O'Brien or one of the pre-20s kids

Surface level, Dylan has the confidence and humor to portray Spider-Man, even if he may be a little outgoing for Parker, but if they're starting off with an established Spidey, that might not be an issue. Plus he can trade quips with RDJ. Lerman may be the reserved nerd type and that may be good if they're doing the origin, but they're not doing the origin. On the other hand, it would be interesting to see how an actual teenager fares in the role.

A serious film like Fury is not the same as a light-hearted blockbuster the MCU films. I would love to see Logan try and keep up with RDJ. There is nothing in his work that suggests that he can do fun and light-hearted with conviction (his forced performance in Percy Jackson 2 can attest to that), let alone trade barbs with RDJ. It's a whole different beast than acting serious and gloomy with Brad Pitt. You're comparing apples to oranges, here.

On top of forced humorous performances in Percy Jackson and Three Musketeers, he also lost out to Dan Byrd's role in Easy A and lost out on the lead in Edgar Wright's upcoming movie to Ansel Elgort. Do you really want to keep trying to defend his supposed comedy chops?

If you think I'm saying these things for the sake of bashing Logan, I'm not. I think the DC movie universe would work better with him, and David Ayer is doing Suicide Squad so perhaps he can put in a good word for Logan.

I have to agree with Jay. Logan would fit better into the new DC universe. I actually think he would be a good choice for Tim Drake/Robin.

I want a teenager A skinny one with a big head who can be both nerdy and insecure but also be really smart and have a lot of personality. Kodi Smit-McPhee is the best name yet, in my opinion. He is 18, I wouldn't want anyone older than that. And this time I want an MJ that looks like a real model and has the MJ haircut.

Tobey has merit for Civil War

Questionably the most powerful moment (or one of them anyhow) of Civil War was when Parker unmasked himself and said "My name is Peter Parker and I've been Spider-Man since I was 15 years old." Maguire could bring that moment in spades, while also connecting those film universes. Probablywwon'thhappe, but a boy can dream.

Maguire could bring that moment in spades, while also connecting those film universes. Probablywwon'thhappe, but a boy can dream.

Now that i think of it

Jake Gyllenhaal would be perfect for Eddie Brock/Venom, he now has the physique and doesnt have to sign on for almost every marvel moviee in the future

Bring back Tobey Maguire, end of story, plus let Sam Raimi direct & redeem himself for something that was never his fault in the first place, he is no Schumacher or Ratner.

Asa Butterfield

I think they should go young. They need to separate this Spiderman from any previous movies. Make it clear to audiences that this is different and necessary. What makes Spiderman different from most other superheros? He's a kid. A teenager yeah but still not an adult. Kids look up to Batman and Superman, but they relate to Spiderman. His problems are about growing up. No excestential identity crisis, just trying to deal with life. Thats why audience's have loved him so much, in many ways he is

I think they should go young. Not a kids movie, just an actor who is unquestionably not an adult. Whether they do Peter Parker or Miles Morales, or a black Peter Parker, it doesnt matter. They have to do something to make this Spiderman different than the last 2. I havent given much thought as to who should play spiderman. In my head i can't think of any actors who'd be perfect. I liked both Garfield and Maguire well enough.

If i had to pick, i guess Asa Butterfield. He was great in both "Hugo" and "Ender's Game"
others could be: Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), Nick Robinson (Kings of Summer, Jurassic World), Tom Holland (The Impossible)

I like your choices. I wouldn't be disappointed if any of those actors were cast.

Spider-Man again huh, I feel like we can't stop talking about him. (Ha Ha couldn't resist an Always Sunny in Philly homage!) Yet this article is a little late since three articles have been discussing nothing but casting preferences. Anton Yelchin/Dylan Obrien/Taron Egerton/Jack O'Connell all could be great. I don't want Garfield or Lerman or a Donald Glover/Miles Morales interpretation of Spider-Man. Just plane old Peter Parker made anew in the MCU and then given a solo venture that has

But, I usually do not get what I want. So I will be down for whomever. I am just glad he can cut it up with others form the MCU.

In a perfect world, I would want to see Tobey Maguire back. But since that probably won't happen, then my vote is for Anton Yelchin.

Garfield was ok, but this a new Universe and think that Marvel Reboot is a MUST TO BE .... the Logan Lerman its fine, but why no check a new Gen of Actor to gives us a new and fresh Spiderman for the next Decade, and my choice is Asa Butterfield the Boy from Enders Game....

I was thinking... What I think Sony/Marvel should do...

Garfield was contracted to 3 films.... So put Andrew Garfield into Civil War - but kill off Peter Parker instead of Cap!

Then the next solo Spider-Man can be the origin of Miles Morales!
