Aw man, just when I was going to do a HULK casting column, they had to go and sign up Mark Ruffalo like one day after Norton peaced out. Marvel doesn’t waste any time do they?

Well, DC does, and we haven’t heard much of anything about the SUPERMAN reboot in quite sometime, so I decided it was time to change that. Jonathan Nolan is writing a script, and has been rumored to direct (though so has Chris Columbus, which proved false, so who knows), but now we really need a new Man of Steel as presumably Routh won’t be returning (though I suppose he could be). Who would be your ideal SUPERMAN?

It’s the role that most actors would only dream of, and only a few have played the part over the years in TV and film. Past incarnations of Superman reboots have been rumored to be really random, like, Nicolas Cage random, but I don’t think the studio would want to take any such gamble this time.

But producer Chris Nolan is the man who took the change of Heath Ledger playing the Joker, as he saw something there that no one else did, so I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if we get a pretty out there pick for Superman when things finally do start coming together.

Young? Old? Who knows? I highly doubt this will be an origin story, and I bet Nolan has something out of the ordinary planned for the plot. You all know “the look,” so who do you think should be his new face in the reboot, or should Routh be given one more shot with a new team behind him?

Last Week: MORIARTY

Last week we took a look at who should play Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis Moriarty in the HOLMES sequel, now that it seemed Brad Pitt wasn’t in the running anymore. Who did you pick?

1. Daniel Day-Lewis (13%) 2. Christoph Waltz (11%) 3. Hugh Laurie (9%)

Good show lads, I think this is a fine selection. Daniel Day-Lewis is clearly an excellent choice no matter the role, but I could see him being particularly effective here.

Christoph Waltz is another good choice, as he’s more than proven his villainous chops so far in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. As for Hugh Laurie? Everyone’s been begging for him to make a major jump to the big screen, and this could be a good time to do that.

OK, who should be Supes?

Let's be realists...
Neither Routh nor Welling will be attached to this project. Period. Sorry, 'Smallville' fans (I -- like GeneralZod -- have seen every episode, making similar vows never to watch the show again, but sadly crawling back each week, just in case it inexplicably gets good after 9 years), but we're more likely to see the Nolans do an onscreen adaptation of James Earl Jones doing a staged reading of...

Routh, despite Singer's best efforts, I liked. But his contract is expired and he has not been asked back. Let's move on.

It's been publicized that they're looking at TV actors. In the unlikely event that the Nolans call me up to ask my opinion or browse the suggestions here on JoBlo.com, I agree with the front-runner in this forum: Jon Hamm. The idea is exciting and actually gives me hope that I might see a screen adaptation of Superman that is as true to the spirit of the character as Nolan's Batman films have been to its respective characters. (Also, if they press me further, I'll tell them, "Chris. Jonah. A modern picture with a 1930's aesthetic is the best way to go. But, hey, that's just my take on it... More tea?")

But, like I said: Let's be realistic. I'm not expecting a call from the Nolans. And those regurgitating "Routh/Welling" shouldn't expect one either.

Set Supes in the 1930's and bring in Jon Hamm for that classic look. Otherwise give Routh another chance with the Nolan's. After all the best Superman is no longer with us.

He is the only young actor that I think can pull off Clark Kent and Superman.

His look isn't exactly like the traditional comic book one but sometimes a good actor is better than an actor with the right look.

I thought Routh did a great job, but he has the same issue. Super-son was just stupid as shit.

Is Hamm too old to play SuperMAN? I don't really think so and he could definitely bring the level of acting needed.

In the end, I have faith in the Nolan's, since I would never of chosen Ledger for the Joker.

Jon Hamm would be a great pick for the "Alex Ross" Superman depicted above. Ross' Superman is a little older than the Superman some of us are use to.

Brandon Routh would be OK returning for the "standard" Superman.

I like the Ross one best though.

Superman/Kal-el/CK Character Study

I think Richard Donner hit on something profound with the original when his production motto, was "verasimilitude", and Christopher Reeves keyed in on a very revelatory observation about his character, as described to him by Donner. The two of them realized the complexity of the Superman character, essesentially embodying MULTIPLE identities. There is a true Identity Crisis, playing out within him.

Let me just say, I am not against either Brandon Routh or Tom Welling, in the role, and as much of a division as there is regarding Welling, he has played the character for years, over several seasons, and understands the character and actually cameoed with the late Christopher Reeves, so he has an advantage, in several ways. Routh, on the other hand has potential and brand recognition now with the character after "Returns" but the production altered canon, that has unleashed some very visible outcries.

Looking through the posts, there is tremendous support for John Hamm, and I side on that fence, for several reasons. Many are logical.

After watching Hamm in the new Ben Affleck Film "The Town", the man obviously fits in a Nolan-esque Universe, as that film oozes with a Nolan vibe, albeit I also beleive that film, will stand on it's own.

John Hamm matches the legacy of the Superman Source Material in so many ways.

He is a modern actor who immediately reminds us of the icons of the 40s & 50s, where the character originated, and closer to Schuster & Siegel creation.

He's definitely got the acting chops, and he can hammer home the Complexity of Superman's Identities: Kal-El, Son of Krypton and the subtlety that goes with losing an entire ancestry to Genocide (if anyone ever wanted to take this seriously, they could look to "Schindler's List" as a reference), Clark Kent, well Tom Welling has epitomized this for years, but Hamm could study Welling and pull from this performance and make it his own, reinterpreting and filling in the holes and make it fit a more serious production where the character has evolved beyond his Smallville Origins to the hustle & bustle of a Mega City, you see his Clark Kent being more Metropolitan, from Affleck's "The Town" and Hamm's "Mad Men" origins, once again, a perfect fit in the Nolanverse, and he could differentiate his Clark Kent and Superman, by carrying his natural nobility.

But the dynamic of Identity Crisis, was really Character Studied by Reeves from bad vs. good Superman, to Kal-El vs. Clark... the character is Complex and it seems very evident that Hamm can pick up on these nuances especially with both Nolans at the helm.

And about Age, as someone else mentioned Robert Downey Jr. is in his mid 40s, and he's playing Ironman, whereas Hamm is 39, so there you go.

I think the Tom Welling fans need to realize that a Smallville movie is never going to happen. Why? Because it would actually require The CW to put some money into production values, and clearly that's just not an option they're willing to consider.

Hamm for Superman!
When I first saw this? I, like many other posters below me, immediately thought Jon Hamm. Why? His classic 40/50s good looks on Mad Men fit the image most people have of Superman. Plus he's a good actor. I can see his Superman being humble yet likeable. It's also helps that he's close to 40 - so we'd have a superMAN, not superBOY.

Of course, knowing youth obsessed Hollywood,...

I agree with what everyone seems to be saying about Routh. He really embodied the character. However, I think Returns was a little misunderstood. It was basically a love letter to the Donner films. As a huge Supes fan, I found it had some beautiful moments that really tapped into the heart of Superman, and I think Brandon Routh was a big part of that. As a huge Supes fan, I found it had some beautiful moments that really tapped into the heart of Superman, and I think Brandon Routh was a big part of that. Having said that, I think they need to go another direction with the next film and unfortunately I don't think Routh will fit into that which is a shame for him.

I honestly don't know who should have the role, but I think maybe casting a relative unknown again may be the way to go. Also, can we please get a better rendition of Luthor in the next movie? Enough with the over the top real estate schemes and zany humor. He needs to be a ruthless and calculating businessman, and I say bring in someone like Brainiac or Doomsday so we can have a real physical threat for the Man of Steel.

Someone else said Cavill, and I totally agree.

I will say Hamm is the Man though. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the role, but I would actually rather an awesome origin story-type reboot (as superman 1 doesn't really give a solid one, just a gloss over) or anything with Zod in it. Hell, I say fuck superman, and give me a goddamned ZOD MOVIE.

I like Routh, I thought Returns shortchanged him because it was pretty much a Lois & Luthor pic. That said I'd go with Jon Hamm, I mean look at that picture and say you don't see him in the role, if not him then Routh.

I am 90% sure they will cast him. He was almost Bond, was considered for Batman and Green Lantern, and almost had the role of Superman back in 2006. He'll get the job.

Brandon Routh
From the moment he appeared on screen I immediately accepted Brandon Routh as The Man Of Steel. The fact that 'Superman Returns' was not a box-office smash had absolutely nothing to do with him. Actually, Routh was probably the best thing about the movie. If Nolan decides to recast, like Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh, it should definately be an unknown.

lets take an unknown!

I like Routh but he is to much linked with the pre-crisis superman (with the goofy CK). Nowadays, CK is not a goofy at all, but more in the veine of the CK in Smallville or Loïs & Clark.

So if they go for a Superman more like the most rescent comics, they shouldn't do a goofy clark and a to innocent superman.

No doubt. Welling has gotten better with each year of Smallville, and since this upcoming season is the last he would have time to wrap it up then take on the movie. They wouldn't have to waist a second with origin, just get right to the action.

Stick with Routh.
Brandon is meant to be Superman. It's not his fault the movie tanked, so why recast. I say keep him. Although, it's unlikely because the studio would want people to be able to differentiate between takes on the film. Having Routh will make it look like a sequel, when it isn't.

inclination is brandon routh, but that may be because of his striking resemblance to Christopher Reeve. But if dc is heading towards a jl movie them maybe tom welling is the man, he'll be cheaper and millions of people already identify him with the brand. besides, it would be good to see superboy finally grow into his powers.

Jon Hamm would be good if it is a more middle age cast, but being that SR was played by younger actors, they may want to stick with a fresher face like Mathew Bomer

OR!

It's a bird, Its a plane, it's the one that says bad mutha f_cka on it - Samuel Jackson

If WB wants an unknown actor I would say Harmon Walsh, he has the look.

I like Jon Hamm too, but he is too old for a franchise.

I pretty much agree with everyone who says bring Routh back....he was the best thing about SR, but if not...get another unknown to do it. Usually that's how it goes with any Superman live action franchise, whether TV or movies.

Matthew Bomer. He has the charm and the look for it. Let him bulk up a bit and he would be absolutely perfect.

In a perfect world, we would have Routh back, but it just won't happen

Best part of "Superman Returns." But, i could totally see Jon Hamm too. He'd be my choice 1b.

I've been saying Jon Hamm for ages! Either Spuerman or Bruce Wayne...the guy would be perfect for either. Hopefully he gets the cred he deserves.

It's no contest. Don Draper all the way. Look at him, he IS Superman! Plus, He can do the awkward/goofy guy thanks to "30 Rock", and be the strong silent type thanks to "Mad Men". Seriously, JON. EFFING. HAMM!

Brandon Routh. Why mess with a good thing? Superman Returns was disappointing, but he nailed Kent/Supes. Give him another chance.
