Catching Fire adds a Hunger Games reference to its title

May. 25, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Catching Fire banner

When I say "a Hunger Games reference," I quite literally mean that the title of the adaptation of the second book in the series is now THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. It makes sense as the movie's quality (minus that damn camera work) brought quite a few new audience members into the fold who have not/will not read the books, and so may not know the name of the next installment in the adventures of Katniss and Co.

Now that director Francis Lawrence (CONSTANTINE) has been selected to helm the flick, casting announcements should be rolling out soon as production is set to start in late August with a pre-booked release date of November 22nd, 2013.

I get the need to tie the films together for the masses that have not read the books so from a marketing standpoint I guess it makes sense. As for Finnick I see Matt Bomer, he has that lean swimmer type body and the blue eyes and he is supposed to be about 10 years older than Katniss.

This couldn't be less of a story, I mean the cover of the book has the same thing on it. Who cares.

Also, I'd like to see Ryan Kwanten from True Blood as Finnick... he just seems to have the build/swagger that the character has.

what a shock, of course they would have to let people know its the Hunger games, just like when they put the twilight saga.

Tidbit- I think it's important on who they cast as Finnick since he plays a huge part in the sequel.

Why does it need to be in the title? If there is a question whether it is a sequel to Hunger Games or not, which seems unlikely, since the actors, characters and universe will be familiar, simply put it in the trailer or posters. Just include the phrase "the sequel to Hunger Games," or "The second film in the Hunger Games trilogy." Put that on a poster and the trailer, and with the same actors and setting, the audience will figure it out. Studios must think the movie-going public is really

Catching Fire alone will stand better than adding Hunger Games to it. Why does Twilight have to have Twilight before it all the time. We all get it, it's a sequel, and no need for long ass titles.

The books are just a complete Rip off

The Hunger Games franchise, is based on a Japanese Film Battle Royale. I have no respect for the Hunger Games Franchise.

3) Plus it was never banned in North America, but rather there was never any distribution deal made between the Toei and N. American studios until recently. That's different from being banned.

@burst: how is Battle RoyalE (sorry my mac has autocorrect) not the same movie as the Hunger Games (novels)? Oh theres districts instead of random schools? or a Lottery system? or the island the kids go on to kill one another is different? Oh theres not 2 survivors? or maybe cause its not televised? man were talking minor details. Its the same story the differences are minor. if you don't think they are the same, perhaps you haven't seen both films. Do a quick google search on "did Suzanne

Do a quick google search on "did Suzanne Collins copy Battle Royale, and maybe you'll see the thousands of people who seem to agree that they are to similar for her to not have. Or actually watch them both. Thats why Battle Royale is finally been released in America because they are capitalizing on the Hunger Games. Also plans for Making an American Battle Royale film being released in 2015 which is now in debate because the 2 films are SO similar. Theres only over 500 news articles about this topic. Here's a link regarding the last point i made about them debating the 2015 american version.

[link]

@Morix: your rite it was not "Banned" per say, but the MPAA refused to give it a rating based on the content, and due to that Toei and company had many conflicts in editing the movie to get it an R rating. The government is the only organization that can ban a film. However the MPAA refusing to give it a rating is basically the same thing. It makes it extremely difficult for the production company to sell the right to sell the movie in America. So indirectly thats what they're doing by not giving it a rating (an unofficial ban). However seeing the success and how the MPAA gave the hunger games a PG13 rating, they were able to reach an agreement which is why we now have Battle Royale on the shelves at video stores now.

@Philalva i don't think its tiresome at all, Battle Royale was a huge film in japan, and when the MPAA refusers to approve it (not based on gore, but content) yet they give the Hunger Games a PG rating based on the content of kids killing kids? Not even that, Battle Royale is critically acclaimed and one of Japans most famous film, and Suzanne Collins rips it off and the MPAA assists her and the film to become a huge hit here, yet hinder the progress of Battle Royale on a minuscule scale. I don't think its right at all.

No. Battle Royale did not invent the idea of battles to the death, even those involving young people. Besides, the story involved BEYOND the actual tournament in the HG trilogy has nothing in common with Battle Royale. AT ALL.

she looks

very unflattering in that photo...

as for the movie, while I found THG to be really disappointing, I'm still interested in seeing a sequel and where it'll go. BUT I'm really bummed about Francis Lawrence directing... he's a great director but man... I want Constantine 2 man! It's in the works but damn, all this is gonna do is delay it even more...

Not surprised, it's like Twilight. They need to reference the original that made all the money to avoid confusion for the general audience (ala everyone else who didn't read the book).

Pattinson as Finnick

I had mentioned to a friend that I don't recall the words "Pasty" or "Douchey" in Finnick's description. He retorted that Pattinson was plenty douchey. Here is my retort: "Finnick is douchey but in a "cocky and arrogant but still super cool" kind of way. Pattinson is douchey in a "I have a tough time deciding who'd I'd like to slap more, you or your girlfriend because you're both super rich and popular so would it kill you to actually smile and pretend like you're not all super angst ridden

I have always disliked book series that don't have a series name and instead re-use the title of the first book. It feels lazy to me.

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' is clunky as hell. The series could have been called 'Panem Uprising' or something along those lines with the title of each book being the secondary title.

But even when an author does this, often the title of the first book remains the most popular, known and oft-referenced name over the series title. If I said His Dark Materials or The Millennium Trilogy or A Song Of Ice And Fire to anyone, I would 9 times out of 10 receive a blank stare. But if I said The Golden Compass or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo or A Game Of Thrones, 10 out of 10 people would instantly know what I was referring to. Lord Of The Rings is one of the only series with a

I would love to see FInnick, but I always kind of pictured him as a Khal Drogo type (seriously no idea why). The Pattinson rumor was a double facepalm.

Johanna Mason

I just finished reading Catching Fire and being a heterosexual male, I can say that I would really like to see Johanna Mason on the big screen. As to who should be cast for the part, Kristen Bell has been campaigning for it for quite some time now and since I have a huge crush on her, she'd be my first choice. For the love of Elune though, please Hollywood, keep Robert Pattinson away from this franchise...

Finnick:

Option 1: Armie Hammer (Probably not considered as is in the running to be a big star now...)
Option 2: Zach Efron (Too short but I think he could do it well anyway)
