CBS's Supergirl series has been officially picked up

05.06.2015

Are you ready for another superhero to take on the small screen? Deadline reports that Supergirl, a new series from Greg Berlanti, has been officially picked up to series over at CBS. Personally I'd rather see another police-procedural about two cops who don't get along but can get the job done when the shit hits the fan. Now that's original TV!

Supergirl centers on Kara Zor-El (that's Supergirl to you bub) who escaped the destruction of Krypton and has been hiding her powers on Earth since she arrived years ago; however the time has finally come for her to be the hero she was always meant to be and Kara begins to embrace her superhuman abilities. Melissa Benoist landed the title role with Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw rounding out the main cast. Original Supergirl Helen Slater will also be making an appearance as will Dean Cain.

The Supergirl pilot has been completed and apparently has been receiving some solid reviews. Co-creator and executive-producer Greg Berlanti is also behind The CW's Arrow and The Flash so if those early reviews are any indication, it's likely that he'll be have another success with Supergirl. No word on when the show will premiere but that information should come next Wednesday when CBS unveils their full schedule at their annual upfront presentation.

The fact that the people behind the Arrow and Flash and creating this fils me with a lot of confidence but the lack of any confirmation this is linked to those shows has me worried as does the reports that Superman exists in this world. I am hoping for this series to be part of the Flash/Arrow universe and that Supergirl plays the role of Superman in that world. On a purely superficial level, the girl they've got for the lead is giving me the kind of vibes I got from seeing photos of the girl that was going to play Mary Jane in the Amazing Spider-man movies. I know it's a horrible thing to say but she's very ordinary looking.

If the costume designers had tried just a little bit harder, they could have had the top of the boots and the bottom of the skirt meet in the middle.

They need to hurry up and air the pilot. I want to see for myself whether it's good or not. I'm hoping it's good. Anyone with power's like Superman is awesome and I love watching he or she kick ass and take names.

The Flash and Arrow are both on the CW and they crossover regularly. The Arrow will have been in three episodes of the Flash this season and there have been a few other crossovers which in a 23 episode season is a lot. I suspect there will probably be one crossover episode shown on the CW and it will get referenced on Supergirl but there won't be the like Flash and Arrow in which plot lines and characters are literally interwoven between the two shows.

Looking forward to it.

Supergirl is a character that really needs to be done right.

I'm happy with the casting. And, now I'm hoping the writers can do her justice as well.

Is anyone actually a fan of supergirl? I always thought these female characters copied from their male counterparts, like She-hulk, Bat-girl, etc, were really lame. And I don't say that to be sexist. I'm all for original female superheroes, and I thought Agent Carter was a great show.

I am. The Peter David comic where supergirl was the former matrix and then became an earth born angel was damn good. I have the entire run. Great comic.
Also I loved the Helen slater movie (still do).

Agreed. There's no utility to it. At least Superman's costume has an explanation to it and seems like it would be useful fight in (minus the cape).

Why do the colors have to be dull?

My guess is the colors look dull because of the lighting. I think they designed it so that it the lighting wouldn't make a lighter blue look pastel.
