CGI & body doubles will be used for Paul Walker scenes in Fast and Furious 7

Mar. 24, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

It was announced last month production on FAST AND FURIOUS 7 will resume in April, but at the time it still wasn't clear how Paul Walker will appear in the film after his tragic death last year. CGI, body doubles and even using the late actor's brother as a stand-in were all rumored as possibilities, but now it's been revealed how Paul Walker will remain in the film.

According to NY Daily News, Paul Walker will appear in FAST AND FURIOUS 7 with some help from four actors and CGI.

“They have hired four actors with bodies very similar to Paul’s physique and they will be used for movement and as a base. Paul’s face and voice will be used on top using CGI.”

The site's source also says Universal Pictures and the producers believe this is the best option for the film, and think fans of the series will be pleased with the final product.

We do know Paul Walker's character will be retired from the franchise in FAST AND FURIOUS 7, but what are Universal's plans for future FAST AND FURIOUS movies? Although many fans have said the series should probably end after the next movie, will the studio really want to kill a franchise that has been so profitable, especially with the last few films? I'm very curious to see what FAST AND FURIOUS 7 will be like, and if Universal will continue the franchise after the seventh movie.

FAST AND FURIOUS 7 will be released on April 10th, 2015.

I'm still arguing whether they're actually 'retiring' him.

Hollywood Reporter quoted it from unnamed sources, not the filmmakers or studio. Chris Morgan denied those allegations at the time that they had firmly decided on that. And creatively speaking, 'retiring' him may not be the best option.

I think they'll finish this movie the best they can and will do a wonderful job.
I also wouldn't mind seeing the series end. The last couple films were great, but why not quit while you're ahead? Otherwise you're tarnishing a wondrous franchise.

Most people dont know this but at least 5-10 mins of Iron Man 3 featuring Tony Stark

Was not played by RDJ at all, but rather body doubles with cg face capture on the body.

When Robert Downey Jr. suffered a serious injury and had to take 6 weeks to recover, Shane Black and co. obviously kept production going on Marvel's Iron Man threequel..but they didn't only shoot scenes without Tony Stark in them. For that last scene with Tony overlooking the beach from the ruins of his mansion for example, a body double was used and Downey Jr.'s face superimposed in much the same fashion as the "Skinny Steve" version of Chris Evans was created in Captain America: TFA. Together with face replacement and full body doubles, somewhere there was a solution to the problem of not having Robert Downey Jnr on set for the time, explains Iron Man 3's VFX supervisor Chris Townsend. "We were able to reconstruct RDJ as Tony Stark on set, with the help of a body double and the facial captures we'd collected afterwards." People are whining about Tron 2 etc but that was using tech back in 2008/2009 (during filming). Its been 5-6 years since. And look at the amazing work done in social network etc. this wont be a rush job as the soloist put it. Theyve taken an extra year to do things slowly and right. Relax.

It all depends on how they try to do this. If they're going the route of The Social Network and what they did with the Winklevoss twins, then great! It will look fantastic. If they're going the route of Wolverine Origins and what they did with Professor X, then god help us.....
As for retiring the entire franchise. I doubt it will happen. I know I'll get a lot of down votes for saying this and no disrespect to Paul Walker's memory, but these movies were always more of Vin Diesel's

I think they'd be more than capable of producing at least 2-3 more movies after FF7 without Walker.

You're cute when you are ragging it over Paul Walker, Universal Soldier. He may not have had any real range, but he had a likability that some superior actors do not (Sean Penn for example). And to answer your rhetorical question, the people posting on here give a fuck, at least!

I can understand why you would rather watch Sean Penn, Double Impact. He's an asshole with no sympathetic qualities that's only been in good movies like Gangster Squad, We're No Angels, and Shanghai Surprise.

I don't know, I still haven't seen CGI human faces that looked convincing, at least as far as I know. Take Jeff Bridges in Tron 2. They gave it a good shot but it still looked way off. I guess we'll see but I have a feeling it'll be incredibly distracting.

If you've seen the movie Gladiator, you've seen some good facial CGI. If you know what to look for, you can spot it, but if you don't, You won't be able to tell.

I'm selfish...I want the franchise to continue. I've said several times before how integral Walker's character is to the "family" aspect of these movies...and how dangerous what they do...is. So to have his character killed off would make sense. I just cannot see a situation where he'd willingly walk away from it all. His bond with Dom is just too strong to make such a scenario believable (sure, when is anything in these movies believable but you know what I mean). In a day when we can

In a day when we can make movies based on true events whilst they are still very fresh in the memory...I do not see a problem with killing off a fictional character who has been played by an actor who unfortunately died in the real world.

it is still difficult to CGI an actors face over a body double. people here are using Benjamin Button, Social Network and Captain America as examples but the thing with those actors were that they were all still alive. CGI faces with post mortem actors is still far from perfect and very noticable. my opinion if somehow the studio would be able get permission from other studios to use Walkers images from other movies and superimpose them in FF7 with a body double since is look doesn't change

I guess that's the way to go with giving Walker and his character a final ending. Just hopefully it comes off as sincere then a rush job.

And the series probably could go on since they're ridiculously profitable, but who else from the cast would really want to after the sad passing of Walker.

Umm , people that have lives to live and families to feed maybe?! Sucks that he died, seems like he was a pretty good person, but life goes on brother, and this franchise feeds a lot of people!

It's not like the principal cast can't find other jobs.

It's just another rumor

I would like to ask you to stop wording your articles so poorly. You make readers think (who sadly can't think for themselves, but that;s a whole other problem) as if this is an official announcement by the studio.
It's not. It's just another rumor. It just irks me that people will read it, think it's true and spread it all over the net.

No it's not. The ny daily news' source is hardly the only one confirming body doubles.

Which doesn't make it more than a rumor. Do you understand the difference between a rumor and an OFFICIAL announcement?

If his scenes are from a distance fair enough, but surely they can't have close ups using a creepy CGI Paul Walker like the young Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy? Even in the latest console games, like the new footage from the latest Batman game. The facials look really, really, really real. But you can still tell they are not. In the hands of another director and for a different story maybe, but for something with as little emotional depth as these movies I think it's bad taste, and will be really

I do wonder how much of Paul Walker's role is left to be filmed. If it's a few scenes, I think it's okay. But if it's a major action sequence, they better make it believable.

Has anyone not seen the impressive work of Fincher and body doubles? In both The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network the resemblance of doubles was uncanny.

It sounds like the way to go. Same thing was done with Oliver Reed and in the 14-15 years since, I think it has become more viable. I'm more concerned about how Brian's leaving of the series, be it by death or going away with Mia and the baby, is handled. Many schmoes have pointed out that it's not in Brian's nature to leave the team behind, since the team is his family and he would want them involved in the raising of his child.
