Channing Tatum leaps and shoots in the first official image from The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending

When the trailer for the Wachowski's JUPITER ASCENDING hit back in December, the response was lukewarm. After many were disappointed with both SPEED RACER and CLOUD ATLAS (two movies I enjoyed), it is going to take a lot of convincing that their next project is going to be on par with THE MATRIX. There is still hope but a second trailer will have to convince those that are undecided.

The first official image from JUPITER ASCENDING has been released and it features star Channing Tatum in his full alien-albino-bounty hunter-elf costume shooting some guns while jumping in mid-air. Like the trailer, this image doesn't give much aside from a definitely bizarre casting and costume design. The rest of the cast is pretty solid including Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, and Eddie Redmayne, but it is also hard to sell audiences on projects that aren't based on comic books these days. Even Channing Tatum couldn't sell audiences on WHITE HOUSE DOWN which means JUPITER ASCENDING is a risky project.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other peoples houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all alongher genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

For me, I have never had an issue with Andy and Lana Wachowski when it comes to showing us something visually amazing on screen. But, as with THE MATRIX sequels, sometimes their screenwriting csn border on convoluted. JUPITER ASCENDING could be the next MATRIX or the next JOHN CARTER. Time will tell.

JUPITER ASCENDING hits theaters on July 25, 2014.

The thing that makes me not so sure about this film's quality is that the plot is basically the same as a lot of '90s anime.

Very excited for this film. The Wachowski's never fail in entertaining me with their films and their vast, beautiful universes that they put so much effort, joy, and heart into. I loved all three Matrix films and Speed Racer is one of the most underrated films out there and I am very much looking forward to what else these siblings can do with their craft and vision.

I think this will end up divisive, but the pulp space opera action adventure tone does have me looking forward to it .

"...it's going to take a lot of convincing that their next project is going to be on par with THE MATRIX."

Who says every genre filmmaker has to always match their previous best work? They just need to make an awesome movie that entertains everybody.

I remember all the complaining everyone did when Tarantino did "Jackie Brown" after "Pulp Fiction", Nolan made "The Prestige" after "Batman Begins" & David Fincher chose "Panic Room" after "Fight Club." Hell..the list could go on & on & on.

I'm guilty of it also, though reversed. You see, I'm a huge fan of Cuarn's "Prisoner Of Azkaban",

I'm guilty of it also, though reversed. You see, I'm a huge fan of Cuarn's "Prisoner Of Azkaban", thought "Children Of Men" was just O-K & utterly dislike "Gravity". Just a reminder to all the fellow fan-boys out there...Your mileage may vary.

I'm prob 1 of the select few that outright loved "BOTH" Matrix sequels and every bit of marketing in-between (Enter The Matrix, Animatrix, Path Of Neo, comic books, etc.) Love going back to that world the Wachowski's created. So when I pay for my ticket to Jup.Asndg this July, (And I will) I won't be expecting another mind-blowing experience like when I saw The Matrix in 1999....I'll just sit back, sip my soda & prepare to be entertained.

I dunno, I'm just getting a hokey vibe coming from the footage I've seen so far. Channing Tatum comes off a a little too vulcan with out the reasoning. Could be wrong though. Guess Ill see...
