Channing Tatum needs a new director as Rupert Wyatt drops out of Gambit

09.16.2015

What's going on over at GAMBIT headquarters? First news emerged that Channing Tatum's deal wasn't as solid as we were led to believe (it all worked out in the end) and now Deadline is reporting that GAMBIT director Rupert Wyatt has exited the project. The film was scheduled to start shooting this November but Deadline's sources say that the start date was then moved to March, which apparently clashed with one of Wyatt's previous commitments.

Rupert Wyatt issued this statement:

I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.

Rumours have also emerged that clashes over GAMBIT's budget and script may also have played a part in Rupert Wyatt's departure. Fox remains fully committed to the film, which still counts Channing Tatum and Lea Seydoux among its cast, so I would expect that we'll hear news of Wyatt's replacement before too long. I'd also imagine that the film's release date of October 7, 2016 will likely be pushed back.

Now that the position is open, who should step into the director's chair for GAMBIT?

Directors leave projects all the time, but it's always a little more disconcerting when its coming from Fox. Also, why was the movie pushed back. Someone said down below that Gambit should be based like Blade, which is a great comparison. (To Fox) Keep it simple stupid....

I have a very bad 'Fantastic Four Reboot' feeling about this !
But, as TMNT wrote, I'd like Stephen Norrington to direct it.
The 'LXG' debacle was mostly due to bad writing and Sean Connery's behavior (including during the editing of the film... WTF was he even doing in the editing room ?
Still, I'm afraid they will take a 'yes-sir' director and go on with the 'less money and more dark gritty and realistic' bullshit, because, let's face it, they still believe the FF bombing was because

They should get Stephen Norrington to direct, that genius hasn't done anything since The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I have this eery feeling that movie producers actually read what we say sometimes. but anyways, this movie has so much potential, if it follows these rules.
1. Try and get rid of Channing Tatum, or at the very least, he needs to lean the f*ck out cuz his fat face isn't gonna cut it.
2. Follow in the tone of the first BLADE movie, keep his environment bleak, follow the color toning from T2, that blue flourescent steel look. Use real locations and keep it localized.
3. Don't mess with his

3. Don't mess with his powers. His powers are very straight forward, anything he touches he can turn into an explosive. He shouldnt be pulling street lamps out of the ground and hucking them at Transformers. He should be throwing his playing cards, which, btw, can look so super cool seeing on screen. That red square glow is key in getting in right.
4. Try and get rid of Channing Tatum

Graham Yost, creator of Justified should direct this movie. Just imagine that beautiful Justified dialogue spilling from Tatum's lips. MAKE IT HAPPEN, CHANNING. I mean, if Channing is even going to be Gambit. I prefer that he isn't, but you know, he technically could still sell me on it.

If I could give you a hundred thumbs up I would. And while you're at it, replace Tatum with Olyphant.

Olyphant actually would fit this pretty well, but it'll never happen, he's been demoted to B status.

At this point I'm not even sure that there's really enough audience who would watch a Gambit movie. People who grew up with the X-Men cartoon might, so basically the sum total of guys in their thirties, Ben Savage, and the rest of the kids from Boy Meets World.

Would love to see what Gareth Evans could do with a Gambit film.

No, no, no get Gareth Evans as showrunner on Iron Fist, or heck even just to direct a couple episodes and I will swoon a thousand time over.

At this point I just get the sense that the studio is hell bent on producing a subpar Gambit movie. We'll all likely have to wait for the subsequent reboot.

I wish it was Tatum dropping out of this film. It seems like most the fan base isn't too fond of the casting either. It's hard to take this film seriously with Tatum involved, so how about Joel Schumaker for director?
