Charlize hits The Road

Charlize Theron has signed on to star alongside Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. In one of the biggest Oscar bait roles ever, Theron will star as Mortensen's 9-year-old son in the -- wait, what? Oh, I just made that up? Sorry, but I didn't think there was a decent female part in THE ROAD. As it turns out Theron will play a bit part; that of the late wife of Mortensen who will only be seen in flashbacks. Theron took the role because she's a huge fan of the book and producer Nick Wechsler worked with her before on THE YARDS. Dimension Films is distributing the project, which means it could fall into the same void that FANBOYS is in and we could never see it. John Hillcoat is directing the McCarthy adaptation from a script by Joe Penhall. Filming is scheduled to begin next month.

Extra Tidbit: I've always pronounced her name as "therr-on" but apparently it's actually "thrown." Weird.

Cool

Things are still looking good for this project, IMO.

I wouldn't worry about a lack of dialogue. There's plenty of material in the novel, though they probably will add some dialogue. I'm not a big fan of a lot of expositional, so I hope they don't add TOO much. If you've seen There Will Be Blood, the first 15 minutes or so has little or no dialogue and it works great. Let the images do the talking. I love it.

Great novel but...

I'm scared of what this might become as a film. The novel is a really good read, but as much as I absolutely loved it, there's not much there to make a movie. And all the dialogue is short and mostly one word (there's like 500 "okay"). Anyways, if made right it might turn out great, but it may very well become a fiasco.

Heh oh man, I was scared for a second... I was like how is she going to star in The Road? As for the wife's small part, sure, Theron's a good actress why not. I didn't even know this movie was being made, Viggo's a good choice but who the hell is the director? This could be a really good film if he handles the material well it was an amazing novel.

One of my favorite cormac mccarthy books and charlize is a fine actress as well as a fine specimen, so i approve. after the coens proved a good film can be made out of a cormac book, i am nothing but excited for this project. the proposition was basically like an unwritten cormac mccarthy novel brought to screen, so i think this hillcoat guy can do it.
