Charlize Theron developing drama called The Clan about the Scots repelling Viking invaders

The world doesn't have enough fictional media material about Vikings, really. It's as simple as that. Thankfully someone of Charlize Theron's stature realized this hole in the current world of cinematic storytelling, and so has begun to take steps towards rectifying this sad fact with a drama she's producing for ABC called "The Clan."

And she's not doing it alone either - Terry George (HOTEL RWANDA, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER) will also be along for the ride in the capacities of writing/directing/executive producing, which is pretty smashing as the guy has several Oscar nominations for writing and adapting both RWANDA and FATHER.  "The Clan" will be produced under Theron's Denver and Delilah company banner, one which also covers NBC's "Holiday" and a planned modern-day update to the story of "Hatfields and McCoys," and "is described as a sweeping drama set in the Highlands of medieval Scotland, where the great clans battle one another -- and the Viking invaders."

Now while I'm very happy indeed at the thought of a series-long drama about Scots battling Scots and Scots battling Vikings, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of room for silliness and error.  So what are some elements that you think Theron and George need to make sure they nail in order to bring true greatness to "The Clan?"

Charlize Theron being thoughtful

Extra Tidbit: Go watch THE VIKINGS with Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine, Kirk Douglas, and Janet Leigh. And Nicolas Winding Refn's VALHALLA RISING for a f***ing trippy, abstract, disturbingly beautiful time. What other good Viking-related material am I missing?

could be good

Idk how to feel about Charlize Theron as a producer, its doesnt sound great on paper but i have no evidence to make me hate the idea. I just think this show would work so much better on HBO or Showtime, similar to Game of Thrones. I'm afraid if it goes to Network tv, it'll be watered down with melodrama and violence edited out.

Also, some good Viking movies? "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Thor", thats all i can think of

Extra Tidbit

The "13th Warrior" with Antonio Banderas. Such an awesome and underrated movie! Also "Outlander" with Jim Cazievel!

Good call on THE 13TH WARRIOR, though I'd say that it's less "about" Vikings and more "starring Vikings," if that makes any sense.

There is a show called "Vikings" that is filming now, to be aired in 2013.

A network-safe version of "Game of Thrones" is probably the direction this should go in. Or maybe something akin to the short-lived late-nineties Celtic series "Roar" with a young Heath Ledger. It was like Xena and Hercules played mostly straight.

I remember doing a research paper on the vikings when I was in high school. Really fascinating about not just the Vikings, but the Norse culture back home. The only movie I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is the horrible "Erik the Viking."
